TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27- Caution was thrown to the winds and rumor stamped in the dust by the bold announcement of a modernistic grill room which would compete with Mrs. Crosland's well-known Dining Hall. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28- NVork progressing steadily on the new library. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30-- judge Egan was caught without his immortal gums today during a most fright- ful rainstorm. House-mates assert that this is the lirst time that Mother Nature has caught Jack unprepared and without rubbers. MONDAY, NOVEMBER Z- Mr. Craig brings a character out of his past-the character of Miss Kitty Light- foot, a silly, sophisticated, young belle who has a weakness for bright lipstick. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4- The Little Band started off with a flourish today. XVe wonder what ever be- came- of this tres chic organization. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6- The Seven Arts went in to see Boy Meets Girl this evening-a diverting little piece. THE' 1937 ACADEMIAN DAY BY DAY-lContinuedQ SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7- University School squads arrive on campus for Tri-State contests. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12- Indian Booters smoke the peace pipe with Bridgeville, 0-0. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14- A Cappella glee club sponsors Fall Hop, formerly Football-Soccer dance. Clever, No? The lettermen caricatures also caused a great deal of confusion. Lloyd Boor was unable to distinguish between his picture and that of joe Roberts. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19- Announcement of new grill room eagerly made again, but evidently not heard since Morewood basement remains heartlessly unchanged. Meanwhile Library continues apace. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20- Mr. Nomer gleefully announces that there will be no extra day of Thanks- giving vacation because none of the alumni came through with a Phi Beta Kappa award. XVEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26- Off on another lengthy Thanksgiving Holiday. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29- Back in the Big House. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18- Many salaams to the Faculty and may Allah be Praised-Christmas vacation begins. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6- Of all the Christmas vacation stories, the most fantastic was uncontestedly that of Judge Egan. THURSDAY, JANUARY 7- Back in the- scholastic doldrums with assignments, breakfast, and such trivia. FRIDAY, JANUARY 8- We attended a St. Andrew's sing last night. The sermon didn't carry any vital moral issue. We were disappointed. SATURDAY, JANUARY 9- Current problem around campus is to find the man who was the ingenious deviser of the names of the intramural groups. MONDAY, JANUARY 11- A contest for the wittiest lad on the campus. The results: Rob Thomson, 100 votes, John Thomson, 89, Latham Brundred, lg Kirk Todd, l. FRIDAY, JANUARY 15- There seems to be no further discussion of the Day Student Grill, all inte-rest being transferred to the new library. The Powers-that-be are strangely silent. FRIDAY, JANUARY 22- May we present our version of a little tale which appeared in the News at this time. When Jim promised to take Bill up to Erie and to introduce him to some girls, he forgot to take Bill along Saturday afternoon and Bill was left, to quote the News, holding the bag . 'Tis rumored that Saturday night Jim found himself likewise. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2- Bill Pettit, unusual First Former, made our haughty seniors look insignificant today. He scored the highest grade in the school, 89 out of 115, on the Time current affairs test, as contrasted with the Sixth Form high score of 79. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10- Things not long to be forgotten: the look on Pete Wright's face when he discovers that he was not selected for the Cum Laude. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11- With the opening of the new library today, it is quite evident that there will be no Modernistic Day Student Grill. Vtle suspect Mrs. Crosland of dark THE 1937 ACADEMIAN ' 2 DAY BY DAY-liContinuedj collusion in securing her Dining Hall from the stigma of competition. Perhaps the school really needs a library more than a Day Student Grill no matter how modernistic it may be. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13- Allderdice skims Indian Five, 33-31. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18- Two members appear for Seven Arts meeting. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20- Indian Five tops Nichols, 35-33. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY Z7- The combined VVinchester-Shady Side play turned out to be good sentimental entertainment, although we didn't weep much. SATURDAY, MARCH 6- Was a day. Bill Steinmeyer came through with an Interscholastic Heavy- weight Wrestling Championship. Our faithful old Indians won the Tri-State basketball championship, 32-17, and acquired another leg on the Seifert trophy. We 'hope there aren't too many legs on this trophyg the last one was a centi- pede. We have it that the lads from University looked a triHe mashed. After the game, the A Cappella cleverly slipped in a Tea Dance right under our noses. One never knows when an A Cappella benefit will steal into one's cal- endar, so cunning are its rulers. The Morewood-Ellsworth dance that night was a huge success, many couples inquiring gene-rously after the health of the violinist and other orchestra members who seemed a bit infirm. MONDAY, MARCH 8- The girls of Seton Hill were the delighted recipients of a visit from the A Cappella. The girls have a most idyllic activities building which was put to an excellent use by the dashing young songsters. NVEDNESDAY, MARCH 10- The Seven Arts opened their art exhibition today. Evidently Robert Lan- caster attended because he wrote a most colorful description of the exhibition for the News. Strangely enough, Robert was the only visitor. FRIDAY, MARCH 12- The A Cappella, started off to see Washington, several girls' schools, and a Democratic President today. SATURDAY, MARCH 13- The Bulletin Index QPittsburgh's Weekly News magazinej said that the .fl Cappella viewed the Presidential private living quarters. All the Glee Club saw was the Gold Piano. VVEDNESDAY, MARCH 17- Irving Stapsy's snapshot contest for the Acarlemian started today. No one ever entered any snapshots, therefore Irving lovingly donated the prize to himself. THURSDAY, MARCH I8- Mr. Craig violently protests the disruption which the il la cappellau made in his classes over the Vllashington trip. THE I937 ACADEMIAN DAY T3 Y DAY-tConcludedil FRIDAY, MARCH 19- With the issuance of the News today and the listing of the Seven Arts in first place of Marne ObC1'U3L16fiS organization derby, this club has definitely come into its own. For once the patronage of this department has not resulted in disaster as it has in the cases of the Little Band and the Day Student Grill fModernisticj. SATURDAY, MARCH 20- The Athletic Exhibition came off tonight. Alas, all we saw was regimented youth paraded past in pseudo-militaristic fashion. Here and there a rugged in- dividualist would step out of line or fall into an incorrect body contortion. but he was soon pushed back by diligent sheep. MONDAY, MARCH 22- Many of the boys indulged in the frivolous pastime of writing out exams to- day. We noticed, with no little degree of horror, that a Greek examination was posted on the exam schedule. Is there actually a student taking Greek or has the Greek department been doldering again? WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24- T'hree little maids from school are we, From scholastic trammels free. MONDAY MORNING, APRIL 5- We will now sing the first eight stanzas of hymn 225. A faint groan was heard in the rear of the Chapel. A series of groans, of varying faintness. was heard under the roar of jubilant faculty voices singing out all eight stanzas, joyfully crashing out their refrain of glee in having students for their classes once more. TUESDAY, APRIL 6- The A Cappella returns with a sad tale of Stick with me and you'll see the best Methodist churches of the South. QThere were other tales tooj VVEDNESDAY, APRIL 7- At a special faculty meeting sponsored by The French Department, the Faculty heartily endorsed the A Cappella Glee Club with the further recommendation that the Southern trip be carved out of the last two weeks of the VVinter term. SATURDAY, APRIL 10- As the A Cappella sang Hail, hail to-fany girls' schooljn at Chatham Hall, someone inserted Arlington instead of Chatham Hall in the blank space marked any girls' school. Sheer chaos resulted. MONDAY, APRIL 12- Perhaps we should add the Library Mural to our list of lost enterprises which already contains the Little Band, the Academian snapshot contest, and the Day Student Grill CModernisticj. SATURDAY, APRIL 17- We attended the dance of the Shady Side Boy's Club, or whatever it is, last night. Only three faculties attended thereby revealing that the faculty does not like secret, esoteric, and seclusive societies. MONDAY, APRIL 19- And so to press. -llfillianz Slzenck Gilbert. THE I937 ACADEMIAN .3 ,1 4 , Jn, CLASS HISTORY or I 9 3 7 by Robert Napier 77101175011 Tucked away in an obscure corner of the 1926 -tlcadeuziazz is an insignihcant list of names. That list affords the earliest known record of this present Class of 1937. just as we, as a class. have developed to encompass the whole of the Academian, so have we, as a class, grown and expanded to encompass and make ourselves deeply felt in all the school activities, scholarship, athletics, and campus activities. It need not be said that we had no designs on future greatness when we entered the school twelve years ago. Then we were a small, insignificant, very modest class. Can you imagine Johnny Baum, Steele Gow, Jim Hunter, and Bob Thomson, with short pants and long faces, trying to recite HA, B, C . . . ? That was in 1925. The next year, in welcoming Dick Butler, Henry Posner, and Bill Stein- meyer the class graduated to knickers. XVhen the third birthday of the class arrived, it welcomed Stew Steffey. Steffey didn't have his accordion at that time. By the time we were ready for the Senior School, Nick Hunter, Dick Mueller, and Bob Maxwell were enjoying our studies and games with us. In the fall of 1930 .when the class finally arrived out here on the hill, Gibby Buchanan, Pee-VVee Kaplan, Dick Mitchell, and Eddie Rodgers were he-re to join our ranks. Bill Frank and Dick Knight entered our crowd the next year. Bud Bradenbaugh. Schmoo Schoyer, and Irving Stapsy came in the next year, 1934. In 1935 'ive got a bumper crop of new members: Jack Dorsey, Bob Finlayson, Phil Goehring, Dave Ketchum, joe Montgomery, Tom Morton, and George Russell. In this last year, 1936, ten new members swelled our ranks to its present sizable proportions. Bud Beerbowe-r, Bill Gee, Tom Heck, Bud Kelley, Marne Obernauer, joe Roberts. Thornley Seabrook, Pete W'right, and Bob Benson came last fall to share our final year with us. Of those days prior to our entry into the Senior School the records are not especially clear. Once in the Senior School, however, the class began to exercise its powers and capabilities. Scholastically, it has made an enviable. record. In additions to those boys who regularly held positions on the Honor Roll, there was johnny Baum, who made a College Board highest rating in Algebra, and joe Montgomery who made a highest rating on the Records Bureau Test in Spanish. There are six members of the class who received Cum Laude recog- nition this year: Irving Kaplan, Gibson Buchanan, Joe Montgomery, Robert Thomson, John Baum, and Henry Posner. Henry Posner also led the mem- bers of the present class in scholarship. THE 1937 ACADEMIAN Not alone in the classroom have the present class distinguished themselves. Owing largely to the efforts of our group, this has been an excellent athletic year for our alma mater. Bill Steinmeyer was captain of football, has been twice captain of track, and captain of wrestling. This year Steiny has brought extra dis- tinction to his school by winning the National Preparatory School VVrestling Championship. He has proved himself one of Shady Sidels all-time outstanding athletes. Bud Bradenbaugh and Bob Maxwell co-captained a Tri-State Cham- pionship basketball team. Maxwell was also captain of baseball. Steele Gow was captain of the soccer team and a member of the Athletic Council. Nick Hunter was captain of the wrestling team. Those are only the major accomplishments of the members of this class in athletics. Credit must be given the many mem- bers of the group who participated so actively as to make this year of athletics at Shady Side one which will long be remembered. The Class of 1937 has taken a real interest in extra-curricular activities. Gibby Buchanan was editor-in-chief of the News which won the annual Prince- tonian contest. Dick Butler presided over the Seven Arts Society. Bill Frank led the St. Andrews Society. Kaplan edited last year's Epitome. Nick Hunter was leader of the orchestra, Bob Maxwell, of the A Cappella Glee Club, and Stew Steffey was president of the Musical Clubs. Joe Montgomery was editor of this year's E pitome. Dick Mueller was editor-in-chief of the 1937 Acadcmian. Henry Posner and George Schoyer have been presidents of the Forum. Stein- meyer was president of Sargon Society. Tom Morton, Bob Finlayson, Eddie Rodgers, Dick Mueller, and Joe Montgomery were members of Remember the Day, this year's Gargoyle production. The list of honors could not be complete with out enumcrating those names whose cooperation and ideals have helped so materially to produce at Shady Side during the school year 1936 and 37 a finer morale than our institution has known for many years. Steele Gow has been our class president, and our school presi- dent throughout the year. Bill Steinmeyer has been class vice-presidentg Ed Rodgers, secretary-treasurer. The Houses and Day Student Groups, represent- ing units of student government, have been ably managed by Gow, Steinmeyer, Bradenbaugh, Knight, Maxwell, Frank, and Bob Finlayson. That concludes a resume of the doings of this Class of 1937. It is not complete. Neither time nor space would permit adequate retelling of the many interesting experiences which have marked our days of progress through the twelve years. The memories are pleasant, to be treasure-d through the years. Our hopes for future of our alma mater are strong. May she grow as we have seen her grow during our all-too-brief sojourn. IQOBERT V. HOWARD ..... ......... D iructar THE 1937 ACADEMIAN THE Musical Clubs of Shady Side Academy comprise an organization of which the school may well be proud. In the many years that Mr. Howard has been in charge, it has enjoyed happy and prosperous success. The main purpose is to sponsor music in Shady Side, in this, it has done extremely well, for more than a fourth of the school are enrolled in its membership. Indeed, the popularity of the Clubs insures complete enthusiasm for music. For more information, let us delve into the organizations themselves to see of what they consist: The Musical Clubs draw their members from the first to the sixth forms. They consist of three organizations: The Orchestra, the Glee Club, and the A Cappella Glee Club. Mr. Howard is the director, and Stewart Steffey is the president. Each Club has a leader, while the business manager, Baker Braden- baugh, arranges the concerts. The Orchestra and Glee Club are limited in con- certs, but the A Cappella Glee Club is the most widely known and traveled of its kind. The Troubadorsf' as the orchestra is known, have long been noted for their excellent interpretation of popular music. There are twelve boys in it, Nicholas Hunter is the leader. Candidates for the orchestra first report in Sep- tember, and practice until March. Then, the first of their appearances is made. They are frequently engaged by the Country Clubs for small dinner dances. Of course, they are an annual feature of the Musical Clubs Concert and Com- mencement Day Exercises. This year, Mr. Howard has trained one of the best Glee Clubs, to represent Shady Side Academy. Composed of forty or more boys, the Club practices on the average of twice a week. Singing such songs as On the Road to Mandalay and Blue Moon, the Glee Club, under the leadership of john Lott, presents concerts at Winchester and Ellis Schools for Girls, besides the Musical Clubs Concert. That the boys really enjoy singing is shown by their constant attend- ance at rehearsals despite the limited number of concerts. Two years ago, Mr. Howard conceived the idea of organizing an A Cappella Glee Club, and taking extensive tours of the South. With the cries, It can't be done! ringing in his ears, Mr. Howard went to work and selected nineteen of the best voices in the Glee Club. Overcoming many obstacles in his path, he trained and led his group over three thousand miles, presenting concerts through- out the South. This year, the Club, augmented to twenty-five, has become almost a self-training organization. Each of the four sections into which the Club is divided has a leader who directs the daily rehearsal. The Club traveled over five thousand miles, presenting concerts in Washington, D. C., Columbia, S. C., Jack- sonville, Fla., St. Augustine, Fla., Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S. C. Eight girls' schools, seven churches, eight radio stations and two Rotary Clubs com- prised the program. The only one of its kind in the United States, it has become the most popular club on the campus. THE I937 ACADEMIAN THE A CAPPELLA GLEE CLUB OFFICERS ROBERT MCCOOK MAXWELL ........... ..... D EAST PITTSBURGH, P In the dual meaning of a phrase is expressed the double foundation upon which a great institution stands: quality, and scope of .terz'ice. HE Workman who attaches the Westing- house name plate to a motor knows that it stands for 50 years of development, constant research, a reputation for dependable perform- ance that is the pride of every Westinghouse man and his responsibility to maintain. The name that means everything' might call to mind a laboratory worker, searching for a better way to control power leakage. A work- man at a bench, perfecting a special tool for doing his job a little better. An inspector with his microscopic test equipment, as impartial and impersonal as a baseball umpire. ...everything in electricity, of course, estinghouse new Www W suggests motors, meters, controls, circuit break- ers, giant locomotives, heating and lighting equipment, household products of every sort. Its meaning should also include the equipment needed to make and diffribnff' electricity 3 turbines and water wheel generators, transformers, remote control systems- the list seems endless, some 30,000 products. Food is essential tor lite. Man must strug- gle to get it, and then struggle to keep it. To protect his health he must wage con- stant war against the forces that cause food to spoil. The battle has been fought since earliest times. It can never cease. It is going on today and will continue as long as men live. The enemy that causes food spoilage is unseen. But this merely increases the danger . . . makes us less inclined to accept seriously its constant threat. The growth and multiplication ot minute organisms cause food to spoil. At warm temperatures, over 50 degrees Fahrenheit, growth is rapid. Under 50 degrees, and above the freezing point, 32 degrees, growth is practically negligible. The most effective means ot guarding against the waste and dangers of food spoilage in the home is with Safety Zone Refrigeration that maintains constant tem- peratures between 32 and 50 degrees. It is a necessity in our daily lives. From the very beginning, Frigidaire- the pioneer-established Food Safety Tem- peratures at lowest operating cost as a basic manufacturing principle. And every Frig- idaire sold today, gives proof oi this accomplishment. FRIGIDAIRE DIVISION - GENERAL MOTORS SALES CORPORATION .
