We look to future years to give a fame That from this nation's breadth may well be lent, As more and more the happy days shall bring Thy name to countless numbers yet unknown And teach them of thy praises e'er to sing, Till all thy former greatness is outgrown. From Southlands, luring as a fairy spell, From regions charming as a maiden fair, May cultured, polished throngs of students swell Thy ranks and of thy glorious bounty share. They'd bring a heritage of nobler life From culture three eventful centuries long, Their friendship-never more to mar with strife- Would make them stronger while it made thee strong From out the eastern regions'-broad expanse In greater part, thy future students pour, Urbane and friendly, these thy name enhance, Distinguished in the pattern of the four Strong threads of schoolday life: the sport of youth: Activities, an aid to self and school, Enduring friendships, calm respect for truth-- For ages sought in wisdom's silent pool. From sun-parched, wind-swept lands of western climes, From prairies proudly rich with crops of gold, There trek brave sons and heirs of future time To taste thy store of knowledge, deep and old. They, too, will learn to share thy golden store Of fondest mem'ries garnered from the years: They, too, will sing thy praises ever more, And join thy sons in ever swelling cheers. So may thy future ever glorious rise, As fleeting years unroll a greater fame, So may thy stature e'er increase in size, Till all this nation learns to love thy name. 68 , ACADEMIAN History of 1936 RICHARD F. GEER Class histories are ordinarily class histories. They serve to re- view the achievements of a class-any class, for that matter. They are always interesting. Sometimes they are more interesting, especially if the historian happens to have that verve known as a flare for historical recording. In years past, when youthful hero-worship urged me to add glamour to the efforts of those above me in the school, I was duly impressed by the solemnity of the historical treatise. Today, as it is my privilege to present the history of this class I can appreciate only too well the feel- ings of the small boy whose inflated balloon has burst, leaving him noth- ing where a moment before there had been a source of pride in a pleasing toy. I feel emptiness, inadequacy. However, since it is my honor to pre- sent the history of the Class of 1936, I must proceed. Our beginning, in the school year ending 1925, is remembered by one sole survivor, the present historian. If I chose, with none to gain- say me, I could paint that as a glorious year, but memories have dimmed as the eleven succeeding years have passed. Now I can scarcely remem- ber more than that there was a first year. The following year, however, a really outstanding boy appeared in the class. Since the time he entered Shady Side, aside from having the honor of being President of the School, of the Sixth Form, and of Croft House, he has earned letters in baseball, wrestling, and has been captain of the football team. You have probably guessed his name. It is Art Murphy. That year there also en- tered Oliver Whittmer, whose quiet way and participation in St. Andrew's, soccer, and golf have been for many years a pleasant influence in the class. The next year, four new members were added to the rolls of the present class. They were: Charley Haudenshield, who was, in this past year, captain of the soccer team, member of the Sargon, and member of the S Clubg Bill Niedringhaus, who was on the football team and con- sequently a member of Sargon, General Manager of the ACADEMIAN, and in the cast of the Gargoyle play, Three Live Ghostsg Walt Sykora, a soccer star, captain of the Gun Club, member of the ACADEMIAN Board, and member of the NEWS Board, Eddie Weidlein, who was Editor-in-Chief of the NEWS, Business Manager of the ACADEMIAN, and who proved himself a sturdy lineman on the soccer team. The remaining years at the Junior School passed without a single addition to the present membership of our class. In the transition from the Junior to the Senior School, however, our number was increased by five new classmates. Bob Dalzell was one. For the past year he has been a member of St. Andrew's Society, assistant manager of tennis, and in 69 SHADY SIDE in the cast of the Gargoyle play, Alas Poor Yorick. Dick Duff entered the class that year. Besides being President of the Student Council, and a member of the Glee Club, he has shown his worth in each of the three major sports: football, basketball captain and baseball. The third new member was Jack Hermes. During his stay he has become a member of the Forum, Football manager and consequently a member of Sargon, a member of the Glee Club, and a veteran in the Gun Club. Another addi- tion was Dave Langworthy, who was Business Manager of the NEWS, member of Sargon, and in the cast of Three Live Ghosts. Last of these five comes Bill Tallman. Bill's efforts have been deeply appreciated by all of us, and as President of the Forum and of St. Andrew's he has shown real leadership. He has also been circulation manager of the NEWS for the past three years. The following year brought another array of boys, this time seven in number. They were: Garrett Bowne, basketball manager, member of the soccer squad, and member of the Troubadorsp John Frary, a star on the football and track teams, member of Sargon, and member of the Student Governing Boardg Jim Frawley, our class secretary and treas- urer, who was captain of the Gun Club, member of Sargon, and who proved his worth on the football team, Bill Hague, member of the Glee Club, Art Editor of the ACADEMIAN, soccer manager, member of the Forum, Grant Johnson, although secretary and treasurer of the Sargon and a member of the golf team, is best known for his football prowessg Charley Joseph, member of track and soccer teams, and member of the ACADEMIAN Boardg Tom Phillips, who was a member of the St. An- drew's Society. In our Third Form year Shady Side Academy became an adventure for two new students. Jim Frank has been Managing Editor of the NEWS and member of Sargon, but was primarily interested in the Gar- goyle Club of which he has been president for the past year. The other newcomer was Walt Riddle, who is a soccer star as well as President of Ellsworth House and a member of the NEWS Board. In 1933-4, only two additions were made to the class. Tom Cleaven- ger will, no doubt, be a great musician, for he has spent most of his time in the Glee Club and in the school orchestra. Isaiah Scheeline has been a member of the Forum, a member of the soccer team, and manager for two years of the Gun Club. The next year saw three new members enter our ranks. During his stay, Phil Meyer has shown his mettle as a soccer player, track man, and wrestler. Bob White won his letter in soccer, and in so doing earned for himself a place in Sargon and the S Club. Bob Kann is best known for his work in football and baseball, while on the campus he was a mem- ber of the ACADEMIAN and NEWS Boards. QConlin14cfl on puge 745 T 0 ACADE AN C ass Dronhecy , DAVID LANGWORTIIH' Imagine, I said to no one in particular, as I wandered down the street, trying to write a prophecy of the lives of thirty-odd people when I don't even know what is going to happen to myself. As if in answer to this perplexing problem, a large gaudy sign thrust itself into my vision. The Great Ben Ali, it announced, Sees All, Knows All, and Will Tell All for One Dollar. Second floor. This cryptic message was written on a sign suspended from one side of a dismal building in the more deserted part of town. After rereading the sign several times, I decided that a dollar would be well spent if it cleared up my prog- nosticative difficulties. So without further ado, I entered the building and mounted the creaking stairs to the second floor. On the left side I saw an open door from which issued a pale pink glow. Timidly I entered and found, seated in an easy chair, a most unusual fellow. Sir? he said, jumping to his feet and hastily adjusting a turban which had been cocked rakishly over one eye. He wore a miserable little goatee which waggled spas- modically when he talked. I-ah-saw your sign outside, I began lamely. Ah, yes, he proclaimed sadly, my sign. He appeared quite at a loss for a moment but recovered himself with etfort. You would like the Great Ben Ali to foretell your future? he queried intimately. Well, I replied, unot mine especially. I'd like to know what's going to become of my classmates. You see, I'm writing a class prophecy. Ah, Ben Ali understands. You wish me to gaze into my crystal and, clearing away the mists of time, see what becomes of your classmates, yes? Very well, come this way. We entered. through some soiled plush curtains, a small room, dark save for a dim light in the corner which revealed a table and two chairs. On the table was a large glass ball. I seated myself, as directed, in one chair while the fortune-teller sat down in the other. After some preliminary hand-waving on the part of Ali, the crystal glowed with light and Ali started to speak in a low, distant voice. Whom do you wish to know of first? Let's start with Art Murphy, he's president of the class. The Great Ali sees a sign on a glass door. It says 'Arthur Murphy, Fancy and Ball- room Dancing. Tap dancing Taught in Ten Lessons.' Well, what do you think of that! I cried. I wonder what will become of Dick Duff. I see a Salvation Army Band playing on a street corner. A man is singing. It is Duff. He is singing 'Nearer, My God, To Thee.' He's probably flat, as usual, I remarked. What of Grant Johnson ? I see an artist's studio. A young man is posing for a collar ad. It is Johnson, muttered Ali. What about Dick Geer? I hope he hasn't taken to posing for an eye wash ad or something. I see a carnival. A man is showing the crowd gathered before a booth how easy it is to hit a target with a baseball. There is something odd about the whole business be- cause he does not let the people use the same balls he uses. Probably just sentiment, I said. What about Phil Meyer? A policeman is arresting a small man for trying to incite a crowd to riot. The small man has long hair and he is waving a large red flag. It is Meyer. Imagine Phil Meyer a radical! Just goes to show, you never can tell, I remarked chattily. What becomes of Joe Bowne? 71 SHADY SIDE I can see a very hot swing orchestra playing in a taxi-dance hall. There are several young men in the orchestra. Look into the crystal and see if you know them. Why, I cried, looking into the crystal, if it isn't Bowne playing a saxophone. And there's Bob McEldowney with an accordion. I never knew he could play the accordion. And Tom Cleavenger blowing himself purple over a trumpet. Why, there's Colbert holding the music for the orchestra leader. That leader seems to be familiar. For goodness sake, it's Hermes! Now, what's this. A tap dancer. Why, it's Charley Joseph of the nimble feet. Say, Ali, who runs this establishment? I see, said Ali, gazing into the crystal, a large neon sign. It says 'Jim Frank's Paradise Dancelandf Isn't it awful, how people will carry on, I declared. Ali blushed and asked hastily who was next. I guess Eddie Weidlein, I replied. I see newspaper headlines. They say 'Clark Berrymore's theatre mobbed by love- sick women fans as popular screen star makes personal appearance.' There is a profile portrait of Weidlein on the front page. He seems to have changed his name. I never would have thought it of Weidy. Ah, well. What will happen to Isaiah Scheeline? I see a book, a dictionary. It is entitled, 'Scheeline's New Encyclopaedia of Words and Phrases Little Used in the Arabic Tongue.' Izzy always was a walking dictionary. Say, how about Jim Spear? I see a busy street. In the vestibule of a vacant store a man is selling neckties which he insists come directly from Paris. It is James Spear. Yes, he just tried to sell me a pair of pants. Didn't succeed, though. Let's see what becomes of Bob Kann. The crystal reveals Kann seated at a desk writing out a check for a large amount. It is made out to the Federal Income Tax Bureau. Kann is humming and seems quite happy- That's odd, I said. Either Bob is practicing penmanship or else you've made a mistake. What does Tom Merrick become? I see a large banquet in progress. The toastmaster has just requested a gentleman to address the guests. The gentleman blushes confusedly, stammers out a few words, and sits down quite Ilustered. He is Tom Merrick. Golly, that isn't like the Merrick I know! Let's have a look at the Les Holt of the future. A large man with a luxuriant red beard is stretched out on the ground chewing a blade of grass. In the distance are rolling fields of hay. Near the man are a great many small children who call the man 'pappyf Presently the man falls asleep and the children creep silently away, leaving him chewing on his beard which he mistakes for grass. The years certainly have been easy with Les, haven't they. But then, you wou1dn't know, would you? What becomes of Frank Sturgeon? I see a red headed young man in a gymnasium peering over his glasses at a group of girls whom his is teaching the art of skipping rope. It's Frank Sturgeon. Over in the corner of the gymnasium another young man is keeping time very badly on the piano. His name is-ah, Robert Simpson The lucky fellows. I'll bet they have a nice time. Imagine! Gym instructors in a. girls' school. Do you see anyone else? Yes. Outside I see the bus driver. He is trying to disconnect the governor on the bus which limits it to twenty miles an hour. It is Walter Sykora. I also see a teacher. He carries a book of Browning's love letters to Elizabeth Barrett. He picks a flower and inserts it into a letter which he is carrying. His eyes are dreamy and he walks as though in a daze. The letter, the crystal shows, is signed 'popsy-wopsy.' The name of the man is is ' You needn't tell meg it's Bob White. See anyone else? 72 ACADEM AN 'WVell, yes. A young man is sleeping in a hammock with a copy of ESQUIRE over his head. His name is Tom Phillips. I see, also, another person. He is standing looking out of a window in the headmaster's house. In fact, he is the headmaster. He stands twid- dling a long watch chain of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude keys. Outside his oflice several people are waiting impatiently to see him. I think he's trying to create an impression by keeping the people waiting. It is Walter Riddle. I see also a man picking up bits of paper off the lawn with a long handled spear. He is very artful in his work and hums to himself cheerfully all the while. It is Burton Hirsch. Offhand I'd say that the girls got a big dose of the Class of 1936. What about Bill Tal1man. I see a man surrounded by photographic equipment of every sort. Several assistants stand by a large truck which is also loaded with photographic paraphernalia. The man is peering through a camera the size of a postage stamp taking a picture of a dying tulip. It is Tallman. Goodness! Such goings-on. What happens to Heiss? I see the guard-house at West Point. Heiss has been locked up for ten days because he sang 'Pahdon Mah Suthin Accent' under the commandant's daughter's window. Good old Mississippi! What befalls Bill Neidringhaus and his ACADEMIANT' The crystal shows that Niedringhaus still runs the ACADEMIAN and has just broken the record by publishing it two days before Labor Day. What about John Frary? The crystal reveals a hobo camp. The self-elected king of the hoboes, who is Frary, is taking his fellow tramps to task for something or other. He has all the hoboes, but one, quite terrified. This fellow is unconcernedly bouncing a tin can on his head. It is Charley Haudenshield. There is one member of the itinerant group who seems out of place because of his golf clothes. He seems to be searching for something. Ah! the crystal shows all! It is James Frawley and he is looking for a golf ball which he hit onto a moving freight train. What becomes of Dizzy Dalzell? I see a theatre marquee. It says 'Dalzell's Dimpled Darlings of 19603 Ah, look! A police car rushes up in front of the theatre and a crowd of policemen run into the theatre. It seems to be a raid. What will happen to Bill Hague? I demanded. I see a night court. A magistrate is seated at the desk exchanging questionable jokes with a motorcycle cop. The magistrate, who is smoking a long black cigar, is Hague. The policeman is Ray Englert. A court clerk who resembles greatly Vince Dwyer looks up and asks the magistrate how to spell 'inebriatedf 'Drunk' growls the magistrate and an innocent bystander who just came in to see what goes on at a night court is clapped into jail to sober up. He is Phil Goehringf' Well, I exclaimed that's all except Mitch DeGroot. The crystal shows a mining town theatre. On the stage is an actor playing Hamlet. It is DeGroot. Suddenly one of the audience shouts out, 'Heg, mug. You're sure Hamlet -without the 'let.' DeGroot silences the offender with a well directed shot of the skull which he was holding in his hands That's that. I sighed. Thank you very much, but before I go I wonder if you wouldn't take another look into that miraculous crystal of yours and foretell my future? Why, certainly. I see-I seeff' Suddenly the light in the crystal winked out and a heavy voice from without the curtains was heard. Say, buddy, I'm from the light company and I got orders to toin your lights off until you pay your electricity bill. Sorry. Ali turned pale and, seizing the crystal, was about to hurl it at the light company man when I grabbed it from him. I thrust a bill into his hand and dashed out of the building, pulling the light company man with me. For some reason I couldn't get the idea out of my head that the fortune-teller looked strangely like myself. 73 SHADY SIDE CC'ontinucd from page 705 By far the largest number of acquisitions to our class came last fall. At that time sixteen new members trod the Sixth Form grass with the older members of the class. Bill Colbert played football, sang in the Glee Club and played in the school orchstra. Mitch DeGroot seems best fitted for the stage, as he played an important part in the Gargoyle pro- duction, Three Live Ghosts. Singing was Vince Dwyer's specialty as was shown by his work in the A Cappella Glee Club. Ray Englert was a member of the Forum, a member of St. Andrew's, and a member of the soccer and golf teams. Phil Goehring, the next addition, was a sturdy lineman on the football team and a member of the S Club. Rodgers Heiss was a member of the football team, track star, and tennis star. Burton Hirsch has been a member of the Glee Club, Assistant Junior Football coach and a member of the baseball team. Les Holt showed his excellence in football, baseball, and basketball. He has been a member of the Student Council and President of Morewood House. Aside from being on the tennis team, a member of the NEWS Board, and of the Glee Club, Tom Merrick took First Prize in the Oration Contest. Bob Mc- Eldowney's interests were mainly in music, having been a member of the A Cappella Glee Club, and Troubadorsg he was also on the track team. Bob Simpson has starred in each of the three major sports, football, basketball, and baseball, and was also a member of Sargon. Jim Spear has been on the football and baseball squads. Frank Sturgeon was a big factor in the football line-up, a great basketball player, and track man. And so the History of the Class of 1936 reaches its end. The days and the years have been filled with enviable accomplishments. From the beginning, the class has set standards and maintained traditions that make this moment in which we have reviewed our Shady Side days a proud moment for all of us. 74 Q 4427 ?f!,Z ' THEM? aww HUNUIQS AND IDIQIZES l X SHADY SIDE The Cum Laude Society Shady Side Charter granted May 1, 1929. Director The Musical Clubs under the direction of Mr. R. V. Howard have made inestimable progress during the 1935-1936 season. They have become the only preparatory school organization of their kind in the country. The past year resulted in the formation of the A Cappella Glee Club and the founding of a tradition of long trips during the spring vacation. These totally unprecedented spring trips were made with the able business management of Baker Bradenbaugh and the cooperation of President Stewart Steffey and William Hague, leader of the A Cappella Glee Club, which has covered more than three thousand miles in its trips to Washington, D. C., Greensburg, Pa., Charleston, S. C., and Richmond, Va. The Troubadors led by Stewart Steffey have made marked improvement in their technique. During the past year they have performed the thankless task of providing music for the daily chapel assemblies. They have played at many dances and have be- come noted for their novelty arrangements. The Glee Club, led by Thomas Cleavenger, was kept up to its habitual high stand- ards this year. They rendered two numbers, Land of Hope and Glory and Old Man River, at all the concerts in the Pittsburgh vicinity and were received very well. The newly-formed A Cappella Glee Club, under the leadership of William Hague and the careful supervision of Mr. Howard has achieved near perfection in a repertoire of twenty numbers. Most striking among their renditions were: Songs My Mother Taught Me, Men of Harlechf' and Sandman's Lullaby. The A Cappella also sang a group of three numbers with girls of Ellis School at their annual concert. The novelty combination this year consisted of the Violin-Accordion Quintet. of which Robert McE1downey was the leader. Of their large repertoire the two most appreciated numbers were The Lost Chord and Largo The soloists this year were: Stewart Steffey, pianog Robert McEIdowney, accordion: and Joseph Montgomery, piano. The NEWS makes its appearance every other week, giving accounts of events that have happened. During the first week the editors gather material, and write articles, which are sent to the printer. The proofs are returned within a few days, and it is then that the hardest work begins. Tuesday is NEWS-dayg for that is when the articles are arranged in order, heads for the items are written, and the set-up of the pages is made. When, after a full after- noon's work, everything is ready, the Dummy is sent back to the printer where copies are made. On Friday the publications of the NEWS are received, and are delivered to its many subscribers. Since so many features are to be found in it, the ACADEMIAN re- quires a full year for its editing. Early in the beginning of the school year the editors start on their respective tasks. The Snap-shot editor takes pictures of the various sports. The Art editor thinks of ideas that he might use. The Sixth-Form editor has the photographs of the Seniors taken. The Literary editor commences the writing of his articles. All this work is continued throughout the Winter term until the Spring when the finishing touches, which is the hardest task of all, are put on by the Editor-in-Chief. Upon his shoulders rests the respon- sibility of the arrangement of the entire book. When the book is com- pleted, it is the result of much time, work, and original thinking. 98 ACADEMIAN IBDAIDD General Manager WILLIAM LOUIS NIEDRINGHAUS Business Manager EDWARD RAY WIJIDLEIN, JR. Despite losing the Tri-State Championship, the football team had a good season. The large support it received by the students encouraged the team to make many points against its oppo- nents, and in one case to score as high as eight touchdowns. In soccer, the games with University and Nichols schools resulted in a Tri-State Championship tie. The season as a whole was a fine one with many local victories. The basketball team was most notable in its successes. It was one of the best teams ever formed in the history of the school. Of the seven- teen games played, fourteen were won. A record as excellent as that is worthy of much praise, and the ACADEMIAN commends the captain for his leadership, and the team members for their admirable showing. Since the minor sports received a very large following this Spring, it is of little wonder that the baseball team failed to uphold the stand- ard set by preceeding baseball teams. The track team performed well, especially in the field eventsg the tennis and golf teams came close to becoming the first in their class, while the Gun Club, the other minor sport, won the Kiskiminetas Trophy for permanent possession. 102 IQ35 FOOTBALL X or 7 - 2 ARTHUR I. C9 It has myriad aspects and utilizes many funds of knowledge, both academic and practical. 0 ADVERTISING is an economic force. As such it redounds to the benefit of humanity. It is a constructive force in modern life. Without it we would be as sadly handicapped as tho deprived of telephone, rapid transit, radio and other modern media of communication and progress. It reduces cost by facilitating distribution. It serves humanity by reducing time as an element in the use and of enjoyment of those things which make life more fruitful and pleasant. 0 TANKI MAIL ADVERTISING SERVICE offers an indispensable service in the distribution of knowledge of goods, services and merchandise thru the medium of the mail. It furnishes the seller with lists of prospects for his merchandise or service. It pro- duces and distributes the story of the economic advantage the seller has to offer to that segment of the people who are legiti- mate prospects therefor. Mail advertising is selective, direct and personal in its appeal. When properly employed it is con- vincing in its presentation and economic in results. H Consulta- tion invited. Life insurance has many interesting phases with which young men should be familiar. The expression worth more dead than alive iscommon and comes from a mis- taken belief that insurance can do nothing for a man while he is alive. Nothing is further from the truth. Life Insurance can- -PROVIDE A RETIREMENT INCOME -ASSURE AN EDUCATION FOR A MAN'S CHILDREN -PAY OFF A DEBT -PROVIDE MONEY FOR EMERGENCIES An accredited life insurance counsellor can tell you about these and many more. Many a man's success is due, in large measure, to the lite insurance he purchased as a young man. A. B. BROWN PAUL S.
