I looked at the speaker and emitted a very hollow laugh. There was no convenient exit. Seeing that I was cornered, I said, Well, so be it. That is how this very cute little article came to be written. Now you are waiting for me to draw out of the magic hat the names of those lucky boys who started this class way back in the early twenties. But lo and behold, the tirst names are those of the three fellows who joined the class this year. They are Cedric Spence, Henry Stout, and Gene Strassburger. Spence, or as he is better known, the People's Choice, is preparing for Annapolis. He played center on the football team as well as being a leading figure in the Ameri- can History class. Hank Stout was also a member of this class as well as a halfback on the football team. Strassburger demonstrated his talents by his activities in the class room and in the orchestra. The preceding year of nineteen hundred and thirty-two brought us -lim Drake, the polo playing fool from Ellsworth House. In the year nineteen hundred and thirty-one, we had a somewhat larger dele- gation consisting of Walter Edmundson, Charles Kirk, Walter Moor, Alan Mor- row, james Murdoch, Robert Sonnhalter, and Thomas Graham. Walter Ed- mundson played inside on the championship soccer team and is a member of Sargon Society. Charles Kirk was the demon manager of the form, Charlie managed the soccer and the basketball teams beside being a member of Sargon and fall president of the Form. Walter Moor, the Casa Loma kid, played varsity football and baseball. He was also president of the day students, secretary of the Athletic Council and Sargon, and vice president of the Student Council. Alan Morrow was orchestra leader and president of St. Andrews. jim Murdoch was a member of Forum and of the varsity track squad. Bob Sonnhalter played var- sity football. Tom Graham managed the baseball team, is a member of Sargon, played soccer, and was business manager of the NEWS. As we take another step backward we see that in the year of nineteen hun- dred and thirty no one entered the class. 60 SHADY SIDE ACADEMIAN t CLASS HISTORY-Continued But this lack of growth had been made up by the preceding class. In the booming days of twenty-nine came Bob Bragdon, John Buchanan, Tom Campbell, Tom Frank, Franklin Knight, Jim Lyle, George Milligan, Bob McCune, George Sickelstiel, Tom Wentling, and Chuck Wright. Bragdon was a varsity three let- ter man in this particular case in football, basketball, and baseball. He is also a member of Sargon. john Buchanan is a member of Sargon and first honor student. Tom Campbell, the full-dress fiend, was a two letter man, getting letters in football and baseball. He is also a member of Sargon. Tom Frank of the serious mind is a member of Sargon, played on the soccer team, and was an as- sistant editor on the NEWS. He was also president of the Seven Arts Club during the winter term. Frank Knight was President of Morewood, a member of Sargon, and a member of the Student Council. Jim Lyle, or Sam as he is bet- ter known, is a three letter man, getting awards in football, basketball, and track, being co-captain of the latter. He is also a member of Sargon. Bob Maloney, the firm believer in all Sixth Form English classes, was co-captain of this year's football team and was vice president of Sargon and president of the Athletic Council. George Milligan, who built his whole theory of life around Barnacle Bill the sailor, was a member of the varsity Soccer and Track teams as well as a member of Sargon. Bob McCune, that bull dog ad getter, was business man- ager of the NEWS as well as editor-in-chief and business manager of the ACADEMIAN. He is also a member of Gargoyle and is a member of Sargon. George Sichelstiel played varsity baseball. Tom Wentling, the fiend in human form, played varsity soccer, basketball, and golf. He was president of Croft House, a member of the Student Council and of Sargon Society. Chuck Wright, that sad, sad case, was captain of the soccer team and played varsity basketball and baseball. He was also president of Ellsworth and a member of the Student Council and Sargon. It seems as though this craze for large enrollments was started in the first form. For in the year of 1928 the class received nine new brothers into the fellowship. These were Charles Affelder, Bill Chess, Bill Clarkson, Frank Doak, Bill Duff, Donald Hamilton, Alfred Hine, Bill Hunter, and joe McGaw. Affelder QCOntinued on page 765 -- 61 SHADY SIDE ACADEMIAN 1 -8 I ODE of 1934 You, ivied walls, have looked on youth And found out all its black and white, The raucous and amusing truth Of boys enmeshed in happy plight. You've heard them mumble and complain Of harsh demerits, studies vain, Of never ending work in class: It might be jail instead of school- Our every action held to rule- How sorry is our lot, alas V' All day you heard us grumble here, Counting with care the weeks till june, VVatchful lest any joy appear Upon our brows and spoil the Tune Of discontent and false distrust Which boys by all tradition must Bear to their schools and pedagogues, Who never can be praised aloud But must be looked upon as bowed By sin and age and learning's fogs. 62 SIIADY SIDE ACAIIEMIAN 3 3' K 3 5 ODE of 1934-Continued No, treachery 'twould be to hold A master humang he is one Apart from us, whose Visage cold Shows what excessive brain has done Advises us our toil to shirk, Lest we become like him by work, And have our younger brothers flee In mingled terror and amaze From our repellent, stony gaze NVhich frowns on pleasures bold and free Thus saw you us, now note the change Somehow we value these last hours, And life beyond our school is strange And harshly challenges our powers, Our masters in a new light walk: They're kin to us, we take new stock Of work and play, and seem to feel Mnemonic ties that hold us fast Together, as from one die cast. The longed-for ending is too real. -ALFRED B. HINL 63 SHADY SIDE ACAIIEMIAN The Fifth Form OFFICERS President ..... .......... J AMES MURRAY ARENSIIERG Vice President . . . .............. Hill Clark- son, otherwise known as the great white light, was president of the Sixth Form, the Student Council, and Sargon Society. He was also captain of basketball and co-captain of track. Frank Doak, or the old German, was football manager and a member of Sargon and of Gargoyle. Bill Duff, the All-American athlete, was vice-president of the form and a member of the Student Council. He has also earned seven varsity letters spread throughout football, basketball, and base- ball, being captain of the latter. Don Hamilton was a Seven Arts Club member. Alf I-line, the abolitionist, was Editor-in-chief of the NEWS and was a member of Seven Arts and Sargon. Bill Hunter, or I left my heart in Jamestown, earned a varsity letter in football, was treasurer of the form, and was vice-president of Gargoyle. He was also on the Student Council and Sargon. joe McGaw, the wild man from Squirrel Hill, was a member of the varsity football and baseball squads as well as a member of the Seven Arts. As we have only six men who started in the Junior School, I will take up each individually. Bud Vilsack entered in the Fifth Form. He was co-captain of football and is a member of Sargon. Jim Smith and Dave Parry entered in the Fourth Form. Smith is a member of Gargoyle and Seven Arts. Parry, the Ellsworth demon, was Secretary-Treasurer of Gargoyle as well as being a mem- ber of the Seven Arts, Forum, and Saint Andrewls. He was president of the former during the fall term. jack Weisbrod and Ned Hobart entered in the Third Form. Ned is a member of Sargon, having made a highest rating on the Algebra Board. Jack, that very interesting case from Bigelow Boulevard, beside being President of Gargoyle, made a highest rating on the German Board, and was a member of the Soccer team and of Sargon. These in addition to the present speaker make up the class of 1934. In closing, let me state that while there may have been times when we doubt- ed the sanity of some of our members, we all enjoyed ourselves and tried to carry on the traditions of Shady Side to the best of our ability. -ROB!-:Rr A. W' r v , W 1 X X ,f XX , w -. f FEATURES SHADY SIDE ACADEMIAN 1 933 Graduation The beautiful spring day of nineteen hundred and thirtyethree marked the passing of another Shady Side graduating class. Eager parents, joyous friends. and restless students mingled together under a radiant sun and later assembled in the cool recess of the Curry Gymnasium to watch the twenty-eight members of the senior class participate in that long awaited ceremony, Harper Follansbee, president of the class, opened the morning activities from the steps of Rowe Hall. Following a few words of greeting, the group moved to Ellsworth House were Charles Arrott offered the Class History. Besides tracing the membership of the form from the junior School, he gave a brief account of each senior's activities. The audience then journeyed to Morewood House to hear Robert Dodds picture the future in the Class Prophecy. His witticisms were received with 11u1nerous chuckles. Thomas Heyward next delivered the impressive Ivy Speech. Brought from the historic landmark of Windsor Castle, in the County of Berk- shire, England, the Ivy is to keep alive the memory of the class long after it is gone from this place to participate in the work of future years. Crossing the Sixth Form Campus, the visitors were hailed by Fred Parkin who gave the traditional Flag Address. As it is the custom for each graduating class to dedicate itself to some principle inspired by the American Flag, Parkin chose the cardinal traits of faith, courage, and optimism. Since these ceremonies completed the program for the morning, the guests adjourned to the McCune Dining Hall with the Fifth and Sixth Formers, while the younger boys had a picnic lunch in the orchard. At two-thirty there was a reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Nomer at East- over. Those who did not attend were entertained by Danny Nirella's band, which played popular selections. Later the entire school gathered behind Rowe Hall to form the marching ranks. Stepping to the time of a lively march Mr. Nomer and the trustees were followed by the graduating class and the rest of the student body. Contrasted against the colorful dress of the spectators, the seniors in white Hannels and blue coats, and the white-knickered under-formers made a colorful spectacle. 78 SIlAllY SIDE ACADEMIAN In the Curry Gymnasium the Reverend Hugh Thompson Kerr, DD., of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, gave the benediction. Then Richard Colbert, winner of the tirst prize Public Speaking contest, addressed the assemblage on Manchuria and VVorld Disarmament. His speech was well prepared and de- livered with ability. It treated a subject readily recognized as of international importance. The next speaker was Harper Follansbee, Second Honor Student. His topic was Education and the Business Man, and in a well-rounded talk he gave a sound argument for a liberal education. The last of the student speeches was by Spencer Hackett, class Valedictorian. Though his subject, Prison Re- forms, he bared many of the wrongs in our penal system which urgently beg for improvement. After a piano solo, Chopin's Nocturne, rendered by Alan Morrow, came the address to the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-three by the Honorable Judge F. P. Schoonmaker. He first gave the students a picture of their responsibilities to law and order. This accomplished, he drew from his personal experiences to emphasize the contents of his sermon, Your place in the world, he said, 'tis for you to make. Education can be given to you, but your final earthly status is dependent solely on personal merit. Next on the program was an arrangement by the Violin and Accordion Quartet of Handel's Largo. The presentation of the School Seal was accom- plished by Harper Follansbee, who had been the recipient the year before. Wil- ham Hunter substituting for VVilliam Clarkson, president of the class, who was ill, accepted the seal for the Junior Class. The various prizes for scholastic and athletic prestige were presented by Mr. Nomer. Spencer Hackett won the John G. Buchanan prize for scholarship. Thomas Heyward captured the honors in science and mathematics. Richard Bell won the Harris Memorial Basketball Trophy besides the plaque given to the Best Student Among the All-Around Athletes. Alan Morrow received the gift of the Harvard Club of Pennsylvania for the best student of English in the Fifth Form. The Caesar prize was given to john G. Buchanan, Jr. Besides the school diplomas, the Cum Laude Society diplomas were issued. Following this the graduates marched out to the strains of the Alma Mater. Three hearty cheers for S.S.A. from the outside and the first stepping-stone in the lives of twenty-eight boys was gained. f-THOMAS W. FRANK. 79 NJ :Eb 'El-1 5.
