THE SENIOR CLASS SHAUY GRUVIIHGH SCHUUl pred en fa THE PANTHER 1953 Twelve Years of School Life Through its Many Phases... IURIWURH Within the covers of this book you will get a small glimpse of what life is like here at Shady Grove High. The Seniors have put forth every effort to make what you read and see in the 1953 PANTHER worthwhile. As you leaf through these pages you will see a small portion of the work and play that helped us live up to our class motto: Let us match our words with deeds, We have attempted to picture in this book the progress of our class from the day we entered school as ignorant and shy first graders until the time we leave its doors as learned and dignified graduates. We know you are anxious to see the highlights of our book, so with- out further delay we proudly present to you, THE 1953 PANTHER. J , f f I - A -.ef A . A It 96 , gg, 'Q 'J ' T ' f -fm if iiiicai. Our captain this year was Mrs. Lucille Cornatzer with Bill Bailey, Elaine Howard, and Ommie Sue McDaniel serving as officers under her. The most important event on our journey came when we elected Louise Brewer our candidate for Queen of Halloween, Bobby Hege, King and Frances Foster, Attendant. The second year of our journey found us better trained seamen, but four of our number were missing. They had jumped ship, having tired of life at sea. This year our captain was Miss Frances Parsons. Our First Mate this year was Bobby Hegeg Second Mate, Helen Frye, and the Keeper of the Log was Elaine Howard. To reign over our voyage this year we chose Nell Lee Phelps as candidate for Halloween Oueen, Derry Ba rnhardt as King, and Helen Frye, Attendant. We were a disappointed crew when we missed winning the contest by two dollars. The sea was calm and full of promise when we began our third year voya ge. The helm of the ship was held by Miss Marie Cameron. Helping her keep the ship steady were Derry Barnhardt, Frank Myers, and Elaine Howard. When we had roll call for the first time, we found nine of our seamen had abandoned ship. Things didn't remain calm long because we ordered our rings 'to properly identify us as third year seamen. The excitement from this had no more than died down when we were ready to elect our candidate for Halloween King and Queen. They were Ommie Sue Mc- Daniel and Bill Bailey, with Vada Hilton as Attendant. Soon it was time to call all hands together to begin work on the all-important event- the Junior-Senior Banquet. It was held April 19th on the good ship Robert E. Lee. We chose as our theme, The Southern Plantation. We were well pleased with preformances that all our seamen gave at this gala occasion. Another important event on this voyage was our part in the Junior-Senior play, Aunt Tilly Goes To Town. This was the first time the Juniors had been asked to take part in the play. We were proud of the seamen who represented us. In the fall of 1952, as the good ship Shady Grove ' launched in its course, we found Mrs. J. D. Parker, Jr. at the helm. Calling the crew together, we found we had lost only two members, thus leaving nineteen of us to struggle on to the end. Being at the head of the ship, we senior seamen had a great responsibility laid upon our shoulders. To help keep the wheel firm and steady we chose Bobby Hege as navigator and Catherine Cornatzer as keeper of the log. The first thing to think about was the annual. It was Miss Mary Rose Hall who helped us carry this load, and Ruby Potts served as her assistant. After electing our officers to lead us in our job, we set to work to complete it as soon as possible. Elaine Howard was elected as editor of the Outlook. As the King and Queen of our Halloween this year we chose Bobby Hege and Nell Lee Phelps. Vada Hilton was chosen as attendant. They won the contest and we were Very proud of them. After Halloween we started work on three one-act plays, Room for Rent, The Ghostly Passenger, and Kid- napping Betty, which we gave on December 12th. Then came Christmas, with all its decoration and parties. We had our party in the state room on December 19th. The excitement of Christmas had no more than vanished when we began to plan our trip to Washington, which took plaee in April. Then there was another Senior Play given. So the last semester of our Senior year was as packed with important events as our first was. Then all too soon, we were to leave the beloved ship that had trained us for bigger and better adventures in the future. Emily Barnhardt Historian Xlwvxx N LB 1 , ', xx ' ii., A P 2' is . -,n 'P 1. 9 X , 3- K xz fx x MASS PHIIPHHIY Ten years have passed since the senior class of '53 have all been together. As I sit here in the lobby of a New York Hotel, now owned by Bobby Hege, I think of the good times we had back at Shady Grove High. lsn't it surprising about Nelson Young and Frank Myers working for Bobby? I always thought Nelson would settle down in Reeds. Seeing these boys makes me wonder what became of the rest of the class. What is all that noise outside '? Why it is no other than Joe Dean Lanier, chauf- feuring beauty contestants! I always knew Joe Dean was good at driving a bus, but I never knew he would be a chauffeur for beauty contestants. Who are those girls in that car? Why it is Nell Lee Phelps, Rachel Mock, Elaine Howard, and Vada Hilton! Nell Lee has just been named Miss America. It cer- tainly is surprising for her to be running for the name Miss America, since she was always after the name Mrs. while in school. Am l seeing double ? No, my eyes aren't betraying me. lt is only Derry Barn- hardt and Ommie Sue McDaniel. Derry is now playing baseball for the New York Yankees and Ommie Sue has taken over Casey Stengel's place as manager since she was always good at managing Derry. , It seems June Lawson has changed her last name to Leonard. That was a flashy diamond you had in school, June. Wonder what happened to Maxine Riley and Nell Myers '? They were such good friends in school, maybe they settled down together. They say Emily Earnhardt is back at Shady Grove now, teaching school. How were those college days, Emily? Frances Foster is working in an office in Winston-Salem. I hope you are en- joying life, Frances . Stella Potts has become a telephone operator. She should like her work since she liked to receive phone calls so well at school. Helen Potts is working at the Post Office in the big city of Fork. Did you say that this is Ruby Potts's last year in college ? She was such a studious person in school. She deserves the best of everything. She will receive her doc- tor's degree in June. Catherine Cornatzer has now become secretary to Mr. J. D. Parker, Jr., now the president of the United States. Gee! is it that late? I must be hurrying along since I have an appointment at seven o'c1ock at my beauty shop on Fifth Avenue with Miss Hall. lt doesn't seem real that so much could happen in just ten years, but you can see that each senior who graduated from Shady Grove in '53 is doing fine. Let's hope each one reaches his desired goal. I remain the prophetess of the senior class.
