SHADWELL departed the United States on October QU, l9li1l, proceeding to Guadalcanal to ioin the Am- phibious torces in the South Pacific. After a briet period ot routine transport duties, she was assigned to Task Force 78. December Wild, after embarking units ot an Army engineer battalion, SHADWELL pro- ceeded throughtitiie treacherousphilippine Sea to participate in the invasion ot Lingayen Galt in Luzon. ln spite of air, surface, and submarine opposition, StlADWEl.l, had no opportunity to open tire prior to D-Day the extterfrie ettectiveness oi the screening units. Larson, the unit consisted at eight helicopters, 'Zi pilots, and llO men includinn a unit at Pathfinders, a s c' llf tr ' d f troopers. , g i pe ia 3 aine group o Marine para- HMM 262 carried out the vertical envelopment pnase at an amphibious landing. Their job was to deliver a company at marines behind the lines for a particular mission of for diversion while the rriain body attacked the beach. The Pathfinder group was the trail blazer. Delivered by helicopter this group iumped into the proposed landing :one to clear the way for the other helicopters approaching .-.ith the regular ground troops. From May to Uctober the Marine-Navi, tearrw worked diligently tor long hours on main tenance and handling the birds in order to keep the helicopters ready to tly anytime the call came. lt was not all ,-fork, ho-,-ieverg the :riarirte's visit is all the ports of call ot the SHAD- WE Ll., side trips to Madrid, Rome, Florence and Pisa, plus the training encampments in Pilos, Greeceg Almeria, Spaing and Porto Scudo, Sardinia ottered plenty of opportunity for relaxation and association .with the inhabitants ot the various countries visited. ln Pilos, Greece, a Marine helicopter was instruiriental in saving 'he lite ot o Greek citizen by bring- ing him to the necessary medical aid .-inert he suffered a serious accident in a remote part of Greece. ln all areas visited rrinor rr-edical aid was administered by the 'nodical team.
