PARTICIPA TING FALL ASB Keeping everyone involved was exactly what the ASB did during the 78-79 school year. The fall officers consisted of four seniors and one junior. Mickey Miller was leading the fall council, followed by Jere Sullivan, Vice-President; Patty Gillogly, Treasurer; Jeff Smith, Fifth Executive; and Julie Robbins, Secretary. Their main events, while in office, were Highlander Week which consisted of a different activity for each day of that week, and the rummage sale, involving many different clubs” at Shadle. The Christmas par- ty at Garland School was an enjoyable and fun occasion. The project with the League was a money and food drive. The money went to the Spokesman-Review Christmas fund and the food went to the Food Bank. The Christmas Dance was a great success, which was sponsored by the ASB. The Spring ASB had a hard act to follow but with Jane Annis as their President, the semester was a SUCCESS. ASB was in good hands with Terry Fagin as Vice- President, Carolyn McDonald as Treasurer, Lisa Lydon as Fifth Executive, and Secretary was Stacey Shagool. One of the events of their second semester term was putting on the Sweetheart Dance. To end the school year they had Spirit week. Many special thanks to their advisor, Mr. Stockman. The fall semester League officers were Kathy Redmond, President; Becky Arrigo, Vice-President; Diane Soderstrom, Secretary; and Teresa Deno, Treasurer. All these girls did a good job last fall. They started out with the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, which was lots of fun as usual. They visited a rest home in November as their Thanksgiving Project. In December the League got together with ASB to see how much food and money could be collected. This Christmas Project helped make many people have a much merrier Christmas. The Dad-Daughter Dessert, with ‘‘Mother Goose’ as the theme, was in January. A real- ly good program was put on which also included the instal- lation of new officers. This ended the fall semester which was successful, especially with all the help and support of Verda Adams, their advisor. I : The spring semester League got together and began making plans right away. The officers were Sandi Weber, President; Gaye Brown, Vice- President; Melody Huntley, Secretary; and Joan Conley, Treasurer. They had some really good ideas this year, like the Mr. Heart-throb contest, and sending kisses to people in their homerooms on Valentine's Day. They also sponsored a very successful Cotton Day Dance. The girl’s passed out flowers on May Day during the lunches and ended a very successful semester with the Mother-Daughter Tea in May. This year’s fall Class of '79 officers kept themselves quite busy, doing things which not only affected their class but also helped the rest of the school get into the swing of things. They started off the year with a balloon sale the first day of school and then again during Highlander Week. Next came the Highland Fling, an annual mixer which starts off the new year. Once the excitement of the new year was over, the officers then started plans for their Senior Prom and other functions including the Sweetheart Dance. Their last contribution came when they helped with the annual food drive. The fall officers are: Steve Hattamer, President; Rita Ulland, Vice- President; Nancy Bowers, Secretary; Stacey Shagool, Treasurer; Lisa Hall, Fifth Executive. FALL ‘79 The spring officers of the Class of '79 had a very excit- ing second semester and had the time of their lives during their last 4 months of high school. The excitment had a low spot between the 2 quarters, but then quickly came up with that final day nearing. SPRING ‘79 The Senior Luncheon was one of the first events to bring the excitement back, then came the Senior Prom which was a highlight of the year. The spring officers are: Jeff Smith, President; Greg Mitchell, Vice-President; Judy Hill, Secretary; Molly Brown, Treasurer; David Reser, Fifth Executive. Spirit, togetherness, and enthusiasm are what the Class of ’80 was made up of. One of the most successful projects of the fall semester was the annual rummage sale for which the class accumulated over $200. The Christmas project was another success for the juniors. They topped both of the other classes by bringing in the most money for the Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund and the most canned food for the Food Bank. Organization of the Junior Prom was the main objective of the class. The ground work was set by the fall officers. To end the semester on a drowsy note, the class held a 18 hour rock-a-thon which was very successful. The fall Class of ’80 officers are: Kris Stocker, President, Lori Leoni, Vice-President, Dori Duchow, Secretary, Mitzi Soo, Treasurer, Julie Roberts, Fifth Executive. The advisors are Cindy Ashley and Kathy Carroll. FALL ‘80 The Class of ’80 struck again spring semester starting off with elections of officers. They are: President, Jeff Atkinson; Vice-President, Rob Caldwell; Treasurer, John Barrington; Secretary, Tammy Holms; Fifth Executive, Linda Ramsey. The officers and representatives entered into some wishy washy business when they had car washes as money raising projects. Then, the students of the Class of '80 showed off their hidden talents when they put on a Gong Show. The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom. The event was held at the Davenport Hotel and was surely a night the Juniors of '79 will never forget. Even with a late start, the Class of '81 quickly made up for lost time when they held their class elections in January. They elected five spirited officers: Peter Prekeges, President; Mark Rypien, Vice-President; Janna Hilderman, Secretary; Chantel Smith, Treasurer; and Paul McKee, Fifth CLASS OF ‘81 Executive. They all went right to work planning projects to promote class spirit and composing their constitution and by-laws which were approved by the ASB. They also planned many fun projects and promoted lots of school spirit. The much appreciated and delightful Cheerleaders of 1978-79 were Linda Demond, Linda Brunette, Jackie Jarvis, Lori Johnson, : Amy O'Donoghue, Kathy | Kight, and Jenene | McGuiness. Last summer the girls were off to Ellensburg where they attended Cheer- leading Camp. Here they re- ceived superior rating in Good Sportsmanship, Leadership, their Cheerleading ability, and an additional award for the most spirited group. With their new disco look, . these seven girls gave their one hundred and ten percent best support and spirit to all athletes. Treats, breakfasts, a touch of confidence, T.P. jobs, and locker and wall decora- tions were a few special added touches by the girls. This year’s Cheerleaders have been a consistent source of spirit and inspiration to us all. With the guidance of advisor Linda Fulginiti, the year proved to be successful. We are all very thankful to these seven girls for doing such a great job. ey ae a i Be tact B-SQUAD This year the B-Squad and J.V. teams were very lucky to have seven energetic sophomores, Lisa Bartel, Kristy Severud, Hiedi Erness, Molly Hanley, Sheila . O'Donoghue, Donna Jess, and Danelle Fuller as their B- Squad Cheerleaders. They earned money for uniforms by putting on car washes and rummage sales. A lot of thanks goes to each one of them. The Scottish tradition here at Shadle was upheld this year by 12 very talented girls. Many thanks go to piper Joe Cepeda. The girls are: Row 1: Debbie Kelly, Denise Nordby, Sue Bagdon, Suzie Miller, Wendy Kuhn, Jeanna Kuest. Row 2: Susie Pollard, Theresa Lovera, Marlena Sessions, Kathy Bass, Jenene Grimer, Jennifer Butters. HIGHLANDER WEEK Without Santa Claus, Christmas would be giftless to say the least, as Shadle would be without our traditional Highlander Week. It was sponsored by the fall A.S.B. officers. The Highlanders showed off their spirit proudly by voting. It was a friendly voting done by the students. They voted for the friendliest teachers and students. With much agreement, the friendliest teachers were Cindy Ashley and Jim Whitman. How can we forget those friendly stu- dents? They were Leonard Hahn and Jane Annis for the seniors; Diane Bursiel and Doug Starkey for the juniors; and last but not least, the sophomores, Paul McKee and Debbie Collingswood. Congratulations to all these _ friendly people. As tradition has it, the spirit played through the halls with the band, followed by a fine pep con by the cheerleaders. To end this festive week, stu- dents put on their dancing shoes and boogied to the KJRB disco machine at the Highland Fling. It was a great way to end a super week. During the year the girls contributed full time spirit and dedication. They performed in many half- time shows, parades, a jewel- ry sale, a turkey raffle, along with two eventful trips, one to Moscow and the other to Se- attle. Much loyalty and dedication was shown by the Marching Unit new advisor, Cindy Ashley, who also demonstrated enthusiasm and spirit throughout the year. 129 Many devoted, creative, and hard working people worked on the yearbook. This year’s annual was to be one of Shadle’s best. With the help of every last member of the staff, the dreant came true. The goal of this year’s annual was to have it be as . enjoyable and memorable as possible to the students. To make this happen, the staff put their many creative ideas together, along with a few nervous breakdowns to reach this goal for the people of Shadle Park. Various members attended _workshops over the summer and during the school year which helped us a lot. There. cannot be enough thanks for . Barbara Beard, our advisor, and Jeff Butler, Editor-in- Chief, for all the extra work they have done. The 1978-79 Sporran Staff is proud to give you this year’s edition of the Sporran. Where was that impressive sound of music coming from this year, from the band room and many other places at Shadle, of course. With many extended hours of practicing, our Marching Band represented Shadle proudly. The 81 member group was directed by the talented David Wakely. Our band was a constant source of spirit for the school. With the heart pounding sound of drums and the shrill of the horns, they marched our teams onto victory. They have participated in many musical events, candy sales, a trip to Seattle, the cons, and half time shows. Combining the leadership of the director, and the superior job done by the players, we can proudly say we have a number one band at Shadle. i Orchestra members are: Row 1: Francine Smith, Sally Gall, Carolyn Weber, Vicky Strandberg, Lisa New- land, Linda DeMond, Joy Vollmer, Row 2: Beth Neidhold, Patty Swan- son, Sharon Hensdell, Linda Bru- nette, Tony Ambrose, Alex Barrow, Kent Sisson, Mark Anderson, Phil O'Donoghue. It was a production that stayed in tune with our Scottish heritage by combining Highland Dancers, a piper, and of course the cast members. The stage was set by two young Americans hunting in the Highlands of Scotland. The two men accidently found their way into the tiny little village of Brigadoon. The village, through a miracie, appears only once every 100 years. The rest of the play depicts a day in the lives of the people of Brigadoon. The hunters try to discover why this town is so peculiar. In this attempt, one of the hunters, played by Bob Urbaniak, falls in love with a girl from the village, Tony Kennedy. He returns, however, to his fiancee in New York. After being plagued for four months by his memory of Brigadoon, and skillfully avoiding marriage to his fiancee, he returns and miraculously finds Brigadoon again. They apparently live happily ever after. Remaining cast members included Mark Lane, Sandi Webber, Joyce Koenig, John Gauche, Melody White, Jeff Amsden, Greg Mitchell, Larry Hommel, Mark Dumoulin, Kevin Martindale, Stuart Duvall, Bill Basset, Lindy Libby, and Lynnette Pederson. Mrs. Cozad directed this production. Assisting her were Mr. Wakely, conductor and Mr. Kornmeyer, choral director. ta : = Se = : 7 ee ado Tre my ta! “January Thaw’ was presented by the drama class on February 15 and 17. The play revolved around two families, the Gages and Rockwoods, fueding over who would live in an old house in Connecticut. The play started when the Gages purchased an old colonial style house and modernized it. In the meantime the Rockwoods, who were known to be dead for six years, “JANUARY THAW returned to find their house inhabited by strangers. There were arguments and fights over who would stay to live in the house. The lead roles were played by Kevin Martindale, who portrayed Herbert Gage and gave an outstanding performance, and Lori Johnson, Greg Mitchell, and Lisa Hall. The rest of the cast consisted of nine people: Joyce Koenig, Jane Annis, Mark Dumoulin, Lynette Peterson, Stuart Duvall, Tony Kennedy, Fred Connery, John Gauche, and Jeff Hall. Credit should also be given to Mrs. Wilson, the Assistant Director and Mr. Clipperton, who was in charge of set construction. The Advisor of this success was Mrs. Cozad. 143 The night life started to rock and roll at Shadle on October 28, the evening of the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. Judi Puckett, dance chairman, and the fall League officers, Kathy Redmond, Becky Arrigo, Theresa Deno, and Diane Soderstrom made the Sadie a success. These girls did a fine job of delegating the responsibilities of making name tags, dance tickets, and decorations. Refreshments were also taken care of by the girls. The night was filled with a lot of different activities. Pictures were taken by Dorian Studios. The couples then got hitched by ‘‘Marrying Sams’’ por- trayed by numerous faculty members and their spouses. Girls and their guys danced the night away to the band Madrigal. Contests were held for the best costumes. The winners for most Sadieish were Lori Johnson and Mike Kretzer, who were dressed as hillbillies. Winning for the most original costume were Julie Roberts as a Boy Scout and Steve Rec- tor as an old lady. A contest was then held for the best dance couple. The winners were coneheads Linda Neilson and Jeff Chapman. The League officers appreciated the chaperone’s help in judg- ing. The school was lit up with lights and the music could be heard all around as the theme of the dance, ‘‘It Came Upon The Midnight Clear’’ came alive. The dance was sponsored by the ASB of- ficers and the chairperson for the event was Lori Johnson. It was a very successful dance, selling a total of 277 tickets. This year the music was provided by Taped Audio Unlimited, a disco system which supplied us with a variety of good music. Pictures were provided by Dorian Studios. Overall, with the help of all the individual committee chairpersons, the dance was a great success. 147 Cupid struck the dance floor at 9:00 on a Saturday night. Heaven Knows and so did over two hundred couples that, on February 24, Shadle had one of its best dances ever. There was a lot of hard work and fun put in by the ASB and general chairman, Nancy DeMond that made the dance such a success. The decorations done by MonaLisa Plett put a little love into everyone's heart. The music provided for the night was by Taped Audio Unlimited. The big event for the people was the six Sweetheart finalists, with Jeff Smith as MC. The six finalists were Lisa Bartel escorted by Jack Robertson, Kelly Bowker escorted by Mickey Miller, Molly Brown escorted by Gary Johnson, Debbie ee Collingwood escorted by ee Tracy Pullman, Amy TAL O'Donoghue escorted by Rete ) x Kent Schaefer, and Mimi , -t°Wainwright escorted by Jere Y -aie Dh d Sullivan. Our Varsity Football team managed to break its long losing streak by winning two games this season. The first win was against Central Valley. The game was played quite well by these dedicated Highlanders. At the half, Shadle was leading with the score of 14-7. During the last half, C.V. managed to score a touchdown, but missed the extra point. Shadle won with the final score 14-13. Their second win came when Shadle Park went up against North Central. The game was too close at times, but Shadle was able to capture the win 15-14. By just looking at their win- loss record you wouldn't be too impressed, but to see them in action, you would find that they were very competitive for a team that was considered ‘‘small”’ 181 qehete 937 Row 1: Paul McKee, Mike Clemen- son, Duane Kutsch, Todd Keller, Scott Groce, Ken Johnson. FOOTBALL Even with the excellent coach- ing and leadership displayed by Head Coach Rotchford and Assistant Coach Close, this small but willing team had a fairly disappointing season. Though they improved throughout the season, their opponents were able to squeeze by and steal their wins. The team, finishing the season with a record of 0-8, had its own share of injuries. Three broken arms were among the long list. Displaying great ball handling, the J.V. team provided their fans with many exciting games, and even though it may not show on their record, these Highlanders put out 101% effort. 183 The Varsity Volleyball team consisted of successful spikers, a dependable back row, and consistent servers. With their fine abilities, the team pleased the crowd of fans. Through many close and powerful games, the girls finished their season with a win-loss record of 11-5, and managed to place fourth in the city championship. One of the most valued awards, the inspirational, was given to Judy Wareham for all the encouragement she gave to the team. Since a new rule took effect this year, not allowing seniors to play in any J.V. sport, the team was made up of thirteen juniors and sopho- mores. Pam Baker, their coach, knew she had enough talent by the second game. Shadle, who was down 2-14, managed to gain control of VOLLEYBALL the ball to win 16-14. They also won three games 15-0. With all this talent, it was no real surprise when they ended the season — undefeated. Row 1: Colleen Harmon, Cheryl Blencoe, Tammy Holms, Tracey Lennemann, Pam Baker, coach. Row 2: Sandy Chandler, Sue Zarling, Patty Gillogly, Robbi Totten. Row 3: Sue Page, Laura Ferrette, Judy Davis, Terese Hack, Patty Patrick. 187 Two wrestlers that Shadle was really proud of were Guy Stintzi and Kevin Coleman. Guy was state champion. He was first in regionals, and second in districts. Last year Guy placed third in both regionals and districts. Kevin finished his high school years as sixth in state competition. Kevin placed second in regionals and was undefeated in league. In both his junior and senior year, Kevin was on the varsity team. 188 Shadle’s wrestling team really has something to brag about this year. Out of the 205 AAA schools competing in state competition, we placed fifteenth. Guy Stintzi, the team captain, won first in the regionals and is the state champion. Kevin Coleman placed second in regionals and sixth in the state competition. He was given the award for the most inspirational wrestler and set a new school record of 55 takedowns. Dave Karas also set a new school record of 11 pins. He placed third in regionals. Patrick Keegan was given an award as the wrestler who improved the most during the year. Over all, Shadle placed seventh in the league, sixth in the districts and seventh in regionals. AV Vs acuane 189 This year’s girls gymnastics team placed second in the Greater Spokane League with a 14-2 record and a 16- 3 overall record. They also placed second in districts which advanced them to regional, where they placed third, missing the state championships by only two points. There were three girls that advanced to State competition. They were Lisa Lydon, Theresa Peterson, and Linda Spears. Team members, this year were Row I: Theresa Peterson, Jodie Weber. Once again Shadle Park has maintained a superior record in boys varsity basketball this year as they started the season off with wins over Moses Lake, Kamiakin, and Pasco. Their last pre-season '' game didn’t go so well as they lost a tough one to Richland. That didn’t get them down though, as they came back to win seven in a row in league play but then lost a close one to Gonzaga Prep. 192 PRS ETI. | a 44 . “Bey The second half of the | season proved to be a tough one as they lost a couple of close games to Central Valley and Lewis and Clark. With the fans on their feet, Shadle came back to get revenge on Gonzaga Prep by coming from a 13 point deficit to beat the Bullpups by four points in the final game of the season. The win over Gonzaga Prep put Shadle’s final record at 13 wins and three losses for the league, and 16 wins and four losses for overall play and put them in a tie for second place with Lewis and Clark in league play. The varsity team consisted of Don Fraser, Jack Robertson, Jeff Kyle, Mark Rypien, Kent Schaefer, Jeff Potter, Jim Schmidt, Rob Groves, Craig Soehren, Ken Lunde, Wayne Matsch, Frank Hollie, and Boug Abrahamson. e ae) af my i Though it didn’t start out too well for coach Jim Groves and his junior varsity team, they did come off a four game losing streak to wipe out Ferris 69-30. The team then went on to win the rest of their games to take the 1978-79 city championship. The team started out their pre-season play with a 64-41 victory over Moses Lake, but fell to U-High 61-72 in their first league game. They finished their season with a 72-66 win over Gonzaga Prep. Row 1: Ishtiaq Quidwai, Jim Bell, Steve Rector, Ryle Kiser, Dave Dam- rell, John Vanos. Row 2: Vince Ko- pec, Mike Kretzer, Kurt Gray, Scott Strawn, Bob Deno, Kip Whitehead, Scott Glidden, Roger Matsch. B BASKETBALL This year’s B-Squad basketball team, coached by Jim Elvington had an exceptional season, finishing up with a 19 and 1 record, which gave them the 1978- 79 city championship. The team’s only loss came late in the season in an exciting game against Gonzaga Prep., which they lost 65-68. The team chalked up wins from every other team in their league in each of the 2 meetings. Row 1: Dave Overbust, Mark Ander- son, Kevin Lewis, Dan Fuller, Lance Butters, Jeff Nilles. This year the girls varsity basketball team did a fantastic job, coming in second in the city. Shadle lost only to Gonzaga and University. They went up against U-High in the play- offs and lost in a close and exciting game. The girls showed great sportsmanship and Linda Sheridan showed her abilities as a terrific coach. Also, like the boys, the girls have a sophomore, Colleen Harmon, who the Highlanders will be watching very closely for the next two years. At the awards banquet, Molly Raymond and Pat Danner both received the Most Valuable Award and Penny Thomley took the Most Inspirational. = The J.V. and B-Squad teams didn’t do quite as well, but they still deserve the credit of good playing and having excellent sportsmanship. They had great coaches, Larry Parton and Joe Raymond, who deserve much thanks. And a special thank you goes to Dawn Dively for all her help to the B-Squad team. Row 1: Jeff Chapman, Rolf Mikstron, Jorg Tilmes, Alan Hartman, Dave Boucher, Ken Mulvania, Tim Robinson. Row 2: Doug Starkey, Mark Inman, Joe Boucher, Al Kester, Kevin Swenson, John Day, Gary Hopper. Even though Shadle’s Cross Country team put forth their best effort, they failed to do as well as they had hoped. Mr. Lochhead coached them all the way, giving them much support and encouraging them to do their best. Al Kester was voted the most valuable runner, while Kevin Swenson was awarded most inspirational at the Fall Sports Award Banquet held Tuesday, November 22. The Girls Cross Country team managed to aquire the Greater Spokane League title with little difficulty. Coach Evan Bell was very proud of his runners and hopes to repeat their success next ‘year and place higher at State. They could do it with the potential they showed this year except for one drawback, they will be losing four very valuable seniors. With the J.V. girls also improving, they could combine to be a very competitive team next fall. beh te Row 1: Susan Fagan, Amy O'Donoghue. As you all know, we were required as sophomores to participate in a year of Physical Education. Many people who felt this was “dumb” might not have known the reason for it. The main purpose for us to take P.E. was to teach us ways which were fun, to keep us physically fit in a manner that we could use later in our lives. The classes offered like volleyball, softball or even bowling can be played by young and old. Their goal as teachers was to point out how important it is to keep fit, which was done in a nine week course of health. Also required was swimming. Other classes offered were among these: soccer, lacrosse, hockey, archery, tennis, weight training, basketball, social dance, and golf. A new rule that will be put into effect next fall will not allow students to be taught sports out of season. For example: basketball cannot be taught in the spring, tennis or softball in the winter, and so on. With so many classes offered, the main objective for us as students was to pick out at least one activity that we enjoy and be able to put it to use later on and keep our fitness for a life time. Coach Page, the head of the Varsity boys, was very proud of his team. Though only having a 4-4 season, they were very close in the match- es they lost. Mickey Buller, was the only undefeated member with an 8-0 record. Brian Hilbush finished second with a 6-2 season record. The J.V. team is looking for- ward to next year. Holding a blood drive in December, they managed to donate 80 quarts of Highlander blood to the Spokane Blood Bank. To show their holiday spirits, members of the Letterclub visited a nursing home where they sang Christmas carols. They also participated in Shadle Park’s Second Annual Rummage Sale and sold knit hats and scarves in the commons.
