HI-LITES Tells It All A lack of organization and people made the fate of the HiLander HiLites doubtful, But stubborness and a little bit of luck got it rolling. Publications advisor, Mr. Peter VanderWegen, was forced to split his time between a first period journalism class and newspaper class. Even with this factor, and the fact that there was a lack of typewriters. the paper continued its high standard of quality. Another problem was the fact that the Hi-Lites had a thirteen-member staff, one of the smallest in the district. Co-editors Lyn Jones and Jeff Wright leading their news. feature, sports, and editorial editors saw to it that reporters completed their stories and met their strict deadlines throughout the year. Members of the staff, other than Lyn and Jeff were Bill Craze, news editor: Bill Geisler, Editorial editor: Kathy Dixon, feature editor: and Lynne Thomas. sports editor. Those who took on the challenges of reporting were Chris Frahm, Kenn Freeman, Tom Lathen, Kathy Price. Keith Snyder, Nancy Weaver, and John Urbaniak. ,lyvwfd if tam 'f1Q7!yQ tl l L f. 55527 0 WW IW g , 2' W0 WW in J 49-f 26 ll litw' A ,ill l Above: Kathy Dixon Jeff Wright L ,fb Q, and Kathy Price work on an l upcoming paper Below Co editors Jeff Wright and Lyn Jones look through file

3 SPORRA Staff Sticks With Focal Point Layout No yearbook! Ridiculous! But that's what the decision at the end of last year was. But the money materialized and a class developed. and another vearbook was underway. Sporran '73 wasn't just any yearbook. Even though the whole staff was new except for two people, it was entered in the National Scholastic Press Association Contest. Despite the fact no school in Spokane had entered this competition for the last few years. Shadle's staff thought they could handle it. Following last year's example, the focal point layout technique was used because of the success it brought. Shadle's yearbook was used as a Northwest demonstrator for its layout format in 1972 73. At the start of the year l was terrified, as the year progressed I was just worried. When the year was finally over, I swore I would take math next year, says Editor, junior Tom Lathen. .4 ,W ,.
