HI-LITES Tells It All A lack of organization and people made the fate of the HiLander HiLites doubtful, But stubborness and a little bit of luck got it rolling. Publications advisor, Mr. Peter VanderWegen, was forced to split his time between a first period journalism class and newspaper class. Even with this factor, and the fact that there was a lack of typewriters. the paper continued its high standard of quality. Another problem was the fact that the Hi-Lites had a thirteen-member staff, one of the smallest in the district. Co-editors Lyn Jones and Jeff Wright leading their news. feature, sports, and editorial editors saw to it that reporters completed their stories and met their strict deadlines throughout the year. Members of the staff, other than Lyn and Jeff were Bill Craze, news editor: Bill Geisler, Editorial editor: Kathy Dixon, feature editor: and Lynne Thomas. sports editor. Those who took on the challenges of reporting were Chris Frahm, Kenn Freeman, Tom Lathen, Kathy Price. Spirit Rules Cheerleaders At the close of school last spring. cheerleaders became a thing of the past. A different story carne up when school opened in the fall, The ASB and officers held tryouts: much to our surprise we came out with seven new cheerleaders. They were Barb Richter, Sharon Kramer, Vicki Hayter, Karen Cameron. Kathi Northrup. Karen Erickson. and Sandi Kneeshaw. One of the goals of the cheerleaders this year was to equalize the sports, In other words, to include and recognize sports such as golf, tennis, cross country and wrestling. Football and basketball have always been in the limelight. but they have tried to make the students of Shadle aware of the sports that are less publicized. Spirit was the number one factor with our cheerleaders. Little emphasis was being put on coordination and style. We had seven bright faces and excitement passing over all,
