AFS Highlander Hans Discusses New ife Style Hans Peter Kohler was Shadle's Foreign Exchange Student this year from Zurich, Switzerland. Hans stayed with Mark Johnson and his family. Hans said although there are many differences. there are many things the same. The music in Switzerland is just about the same as in America. Even though it may be prepared in a different way, the food is about the same. One type of food that was strange to Hans was jello. which he didn't care for very much. In the Swiss school system the students are required to carry 11 subjects a week. ln Switzerland, as America, skiing is a favorite sport of which Hans is an avid fan and has taken part in for the past seven years. He had only one problem-he didn't have any skis and had to borrow a pair from an American friend. Since I have been here, many people have asked me to speak about differences, which I can see between the school I went to and Shadle Park. So I would like to point out some differences, although it is rather difficult to say something, because I might see things very subjective. One of the main differences l have been concerned about is the relatonship between the teachers and the pupils. Here at Shadle the relationship is based more on friendship. The teacher is more a friend to the pupil than an authoritative person how it is at the school I was enrolled in Switzerland. In fact it's harder to run through the gymnasium Ithat's the type of school I use to go tol than to run through a high school. because we are required to take more subjects in the meaning. that the pupil develops a certain background of knowledge. Cause by our school system no handicraft classes are enrolled in our school program. Thus the emphasis is given to languages and humanities. These are about the main differences I can write about here. 23
