Department Adds Italian Language to '70 Curriculum ltalian has been added to Shadle's language curriculum this year. The subject is being taught by Miss Elena Gal- liena, a Fulbright Exchange teacher from Milan, Italy. Also offered for the first time this year is third level Rus- sian, being taught by Mr. llmar Kuljus. Russian is the only Asiatic language offered at Shadle. Classes this year are what they have always been- teaching the skills of using a foreign tongue and trying to understand their culture and think in their terms, stated Mr. Frank Yuse, head of English and Foreign Lan- guage Department. According to Mr. Yuse the enrollment is about the same as last year even though a new class has been added. One more classroom has been added for the Italian class. This year no special devices were used. The teachers still use a cross between tradi- tional and the new audio- lingual method. The new concept allows the student to hear a recording of the language and then repeat it to help him understand the pronunciation. A foreign language gives the student a skill for the future and may help him in attend- ing college. Science Department Suiter with Crowded Conditions Above: Mr. Tex Clark illustrates one of the basic principles of physics for one of his physics classes. Mr. Clark's classes par- ticipated in many experiments during the year. Crowded conditions hamp- ered the Science Department during the 69-70 school year. Science classes averaged about thirty-seven students per room and the Science Department had to use a Home Economics room for one of its Biology classes. One year of science was re- quired of high school stu- dents. Most students earned their science credit in Bi- ology. Approximately 951 of all sophomores took Biology. All students did not stop after one year of science, however. About 30? of the juniors took Chemistry. Some 10-152 of the students who had taken Chemistry went on to Physics in their senior year. About one hundred students took three years of science. About 907, of these one Below: Left to right, Jim Down- ard, Ken Fasules, and Steve Ross- man, three of the Science De- partment's lab assistants do preparation work for a chemistry hundred students will seek careers in science, estimated Nlr. Tex Clark, in an evalua- tion of the Science Depart- ment. lVlr. Clark, physics and inte- grated science teacher, talk- ed of a more balanced sci- ence curriculum. One se- mester of biology, one se- mester of chemistry, and one semester of physics, stated Mr. Clark, would give stu- dents a more balanced out- look on science than the present two semesters re- quired in one science. Chemistry classes received new textbooks last year. Shadle was the only school using these books, fulfilling the one year trial period re- quired of all new texts, said Mr. Clark. These books open- ed the door for new experi- ments and teaching tech- niques. class. Lab assistants duties in- cluded helping set up experi- ments, and putting away chem- icals, plus doing any other odd jobs teachers may have for them.
