Mrs. Margaret Ostness explains dif- ferent media and environments of fruit flies in an Integrated Science Lab session. Unusual Science Classes Stress Student Interest, Course Content Offering Paleobiology and ln- tegrated Science for a second year, Shadle science instruc- tors attempted to satisfy stu- dent interest with unique course content. Paleobiology, a senior class, emphasizes historical geology of the Northwest. Students could choose any of seven field trips in Washington and Montana. ln the classroom, Mr. Joseph Heslin lectured on rocks, min- erals and natural forces, using films and slides for illustra- tion. Mrs. Margaret Ostness' ecol- ogy section of Integrated Sci- ence studies show bugs under various environments to test their development, adaptation, and preferences in relation to plants. Also in lntegrated Science, students in Mr. Paul Jensen's chemistry section determined the amount of oxygen and water consumed by goldfish. In the third Integrated Sci- ence section, Mr. E. B. Chris- man guides a physical study of sound-how it originates, is manipulated, and controlled. Seven classes of General Chemistry, offered only at Shadle, resemble a college preparatory course, although they are not as rigorous as CHEM Study or the Honors section of Chemistry. Observing live organisms and their life function, general biology classes studied plant life, insecticides, weed killers, and landscaping. Below: Kathy Johnson and Richard Merritt check fruit fly cultures and count populations, as Rod Holmes identifies fruit flies with a binocu- lar microscope. The experiment is part of the ecology study of the Integrated Science course, a class designed to expose students to three phases of lab science,
