Right: Note taking and lectures were just a part of Mr. Ronal J. Chattin's World War l and ll class. The class studied the causes of World War I, the war itself, the effect, and post war years which led to the next world war. They also studied how the wars changed the world and affected the people. Students can better understand the aftermath of war by experienc- ing the post war years of World War ll, expressed Mr. Chattin. The class was designed to help the students see what might occur if there was to be another World War. Left: Students gained a realistic view of world problems, learned background to contemporary crises and saw history come alive through effective use of educa- tional films in the social studies classes. Continued use of films, with special emphasis on the new releases which added up-to-date interpreta- tion and facts, marked the year for the 2300 enrollees in the social studies classes. ibepartment Head Mr. Howard McNew said that at least 430 students took two classes, thus raising the total de- partment enrolIment.J Social studies film bookings through the audio visual center totaled 442 or 48 per cent of the school's total use of films, indicat- ing the department's reliance on this media. l l

Histor Department Modernizes Exciting, different, and a little hard, expressed the opinion of many students from the new World l and ll and Humanities course that entered the his- tory department this year. Lec- tures and individual research work replaced the conven- tional text books. Students also received a college credit for the Humanities course. Government, Economics, and Contemporary World Problems classes modernized their techniques by analyzing re- cent laws passed, the story of corporation, and foreign aid. Guest speakers helped to stim- ulate student interest in eco- nomic classes. Mr. George Manning, who taught Govern- ment and United States His- tory this year stated, Even the students who don't, or haven't liked history have taken a more active interest this year than formerIy. Go- ing on, he said, Students to- day seem better informed on world and political affairs, this is largely due to television. Art, literature, and music helped the U.S. History stu- dents understand the philo- sophical approach to history, as they worked on a research paper this year. Finding new answers to old problems and working inde- pendently, the sophomores studied the basic facts of World History. Northwest History replaced Washington State History for those who didn't receive Washington State History as freshmen. Students are re- quired to take this course to graduate. Jessie Sussek and Chris Brannan animatedly discuss a problem in third period Northwest History. fa.: '--' t ' f' f-- f ' - as r N 'e-r ' l'-VHWW A---Masai' '
