Music Leader Earns Sporran Dedication From vigorously cheering at gametime to seriously revis- ing a musical score, Mr. John R. Harris, music department head, has actively enlivened and promoted Shadle's High- lander tradition for the past ten years. He directs the or- chestra, the concert, cadet, and stage bands, assists the Highlandaires, supenlises the Piper Band and also serves as stage manager. Mr. Harris' music career be- gan at college, where he was the leader of a band. He re- ceived his master's degree from Eastern Washington State College, and he taught music at Havermale before joining Shadle's faculty. ln 1958, Mr. Harris and Mr. William Thomas, a member of the Lilac City Pipe Band, origi- nated Shadle's Bagpipe Band. With Mr. Harris organizing and Mr. Thomas teaching bagpipe lessons, the Scottish theme of the school developed. Through local performances and personal senfices, Mr. Harris helped the community become more aware of Shadle Park. He performs for the an- nual Shrine Circus and Ice Capade Shows, and plays first trumpet in the Spokane Sym- phony Orchestra, a position he has held for 20 years. For his outstanding contribu- tions and services to Shadle and the community, the staff proudly dedicates the 1967 Sporran to Mr. John R. Harris, an enthusiastic member of the faculty.
