QpowuitM UotuwA PtiwctjDCtl! Wllttotw W. Toubw Shadle Park grew this year: 2224 students compose the biggest school in Spokane. Seniors, 878 strong, form the largest class to graduate from a city school. New situations face the faculty and staff, but no one feels the pressure more than the principal. He deals with student, business and administrative problems into after-school and weekend hours. Some of this is gratifying,- some isn ' t. A principal is extremely proud to write a college that a student has a 3.8 GPA and is an able leader. However, he finds it difficult to tell a parent that his son is a constant disciplinary problem and can no longer attend Shadle. Yet these things must be done. Counselors, business man¬ agers, department heads and office staff assist the principal and ease his load. But ultimately, all major problems and decisions rest with him. For his service to Shadle Park High School and Spokane youth, the staff proudly dedicates the 1965 Sporran to Mr. William W. Taylor. Mr. Taylor, as a featured speaker at convocations and assemblies, symbolizes High¬ lander pride, spirit and loyalty.

Even serious problems may contain a note of humor for Wil¬ liam Taylor and vice-principal Keith Rostvold, left. They fre¬ quently confer to coordinate Shadle ' s administrative policy. Mr. Taylor silently reflects on Reverend Bill Tatum ' s speech during the spring ASB installa¬ tion con. Shadle Park High School opened September, 1957, with William W. Taylor as its first principal. Mr. Taylor graduated from public high school in Whitefish, Mon¬ tana, and received a BA degree from Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, four years later. He taught at Cass Lake, Minnesota, for one year and at Cutbank, Montana, for five years. In 1935 he moved to Spokane and began teaching math at Lewis and Clark High School. He became LC’s vice-principal in 1942. During these years of experience, Mr. Taylor gained knowledge about teachers and instruction methods, which enabled him to gather a top professional staff at Shadle Park. The common educational goal is the best possible edu¬ cation for the individual student! Before Shadle opened in 1957, Mr. Taylor conducted an intensive six-week summer training program for the entire staff. This was designed to acquaint the teachers, coordinate the cur¬ riculum, set the activities schedule, and establish a basic school philosophy. His highly efficient and effective or¬ ganization has earned national recognition for Shadle.
