But Looking back on the past three years, memories and the people it too); to make them come history of the class of 1976. We began our high school years looking for the fun and excitement as the months progressed, school took on an added dimension, one that will come to shape our future. As Sophomores, we were able to have Coach Smith in his last year of coaching at Shades Valley. He led our football team in a 4-5-1 season. Our first Mountie Day was filled with inexperienced chicken wire pushing,' long ofternoons of sign painting, and a Rick Dees Pep Rally I Mindy Duncan was selected our Sophomore attendant in the Homecoming Court. Our first class elections rosulted with Greg Smith as Sophomore President. During this yeor. Shodes Valley functioned as two schools in one, as the Resource Leornin© Conter began ittfirst full year. We learned to hold our breaths for long periods of time os we darted to classes through the smoking area. Although he remained only a yeor, Mr. Segars, our new vice-principal was welcomed by the student body through a Roast. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Shades Valloy, we were made more aware of the school's ing one by one as Coach lartnby strolled through the halls. How can we forget TEA-for cheerleader and Mountiettcs, and our first College and Career Doys? In exchange json, we christened a brand new baseball field. (rcre quickly caught up in Chemistry labs with Mrs. Moton, and English themes with Miss past history. The girls fell in love, foil! HOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON, try for a parking lot, at the opening of the As our Junior year got underway, we Ur football team finished w,th a 8-3 record — best in the history of Shades Valley! The season consisted of two tops ussville because of the bl Ken Burke nomed Player of the Year. Al.Homecoming, we proudly presented Pam Klinner os Our Junior Rickmart. Our football team finished with a 8- ackbut and flood, three trips to Legion Field for State 3-A playoffs, a fourth ronked stale or attendant nton, another new vice-principal, was also welcomed with a Roost and an added and the Family Living mock triple i to all who knew and loved Mountie Doy highlighted with a newly revived Homecoming Parade. Junior class officers were elected with David McKinney as President. The officers worked hard pl Hfog for the Jr.-Sr. Prom, ond their efforts were seen and appreciated. While a junior. Bill Harris was named Bund.Drum Ma|or. Mr I bonus — a pie in the face! BERNADINE, constant tornado drills, ordering Senior Class ring wedding ore o few of the activities we experienced. The death of Mrs. Inez Coger came as her, but she will long remain in our hearts. At last, with much anticipation and '76 spirit, we began our long awaited senior year. The yeajrbegan with debates, meetings, and chorged emotions because of the new students we received. But with one minor Riot,' all problems were quickly and efficiently solved by the Bi-Racial Committee. RLC was moved to Rosedole, offering more room. Senior class officers were elect ond our senior lounge quickly opened. We sow many young, new teachers who were often mistaken for students insteod of teachers! After becoming accustomed to IWP's, our schedule wa| changed to an eight period day and oefivify periods for assemblies. College bound students found a serious meaning behind College Day. The Legend of Shades Valley soon become o realization as Miss Mackey in 107 made senior English the long-dreaded horror. Mrs. Harrell became a nightmare to all Math students. Our footboll team once ogam become 4-A, and finished the season with a record of 7-3. A disappointing loss to Mt. Brook was our last hope of making State playoffs. As our boys became big senior football players,' they began to understand the importance of having a tootsie pop at every pep rally! The pep rallies showed the seniors dominating the spirit stick, canning our fantastic spirit for the Juniors, bare-foot skits, signs and more signs! Mountie Doy downed dull and rainy, but this did not stop us. We succeeded with the best decorated hall ever, a parade, the best of pep follies, a victory over Bonks, and the traditional Homecoming Dance. Debbie Burdin was crowned Homecoming Queen, and Cindy Turpin Senior attendant Homecoming cere monies oiso included a parade of post Shades Volley Homecoming Queens. On home games, fans sat on newly pointed bleachers. On Halloween night, the band and players received a police escort out of Brighton because of egg and bottle throwing. A selected few of our players Outshone this ridiculous incident on tho return bus tnp. The Maxwell Air Force Bond played and their female vocalist sang to several of our red-faced guys. Dann Blumenthol received the Betty Crocker Award. Our class finally received the crown os Thereso Carver was named Miss Tower. During the special bicentennial pageant, Rus Noe gave an exclusive fashion show, modeling his top hat and cane. The traditional Christmas Party was o bumping success. The girls dommoted the donee floor os DJ's Ron Roddy ond Chuck McCortney provided music ond entertainment. Mr. Denton returned from Christmas holidays beardless. We initiated our new second vice-principal, Mr. Sanders, in style with still another Roost! TWIRP week's 50's Sock Hop with J. B„ THE MIRACLE WORKER, Black History Week, N.H.S. Toppings, Holy Week, and Student Council elections all hold o special smile of remembrance for the leaving seniors. The ordering of graduation supplies mode us realize that our senior prom and graduation ceremonies were now upon us. % . We are now ready to face life with all its difficulties as well os rewards. On our country's 200th anniversary, we hope we will be able to contribute to the further growth of America os we become the leaders of tomorrow Moy Goarichly bless you in the years to come in all aspects of your life. She's reading the latest editions of How to guess Incorrectly on an ACT test by Butch Watts, and ”1001 Lies About Your Sex Life, by Ron Garikes. Now I see two lovers. It looks like George Zekoff has married Alisa Tyner. But there's nothing but trouble ahead for the lovebirds. Suppose they have a kid and he picks his nose . . . And now we focus in on Miss Mackey ... I’m sorry we are experiencing technical difficulty. The Mirror is cracking. Good-Bye and Good Luck Spirit of 76 Class Prophets, David McKinney and Charles Wright looking through the window of time I hove often teen my post. And, in it, a swirling hoze of memories. Where all of nature joins to bless this valley ivith its loveliness E. O. Osborne 771 Where do we go from here? Where do we go from here? To many students, graduation is o time for good-byes and good lucks but to me it is a time for very sincere thanks. My thanks go to the wonderful Tower Staff for putting up with my wild ideas and quick temperl Throughout this school year it would be common practice to find the staff working late at night in our second home (more commonly known as the Tower Room)! And, of course, along with our second home, we have two mothers, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Rushin. They too, have worked long, tireless hours. To them I also extend my deep appreciation. The staff and sponsors have done on exceptional pb for it is indeed o difficult task to compile a single book that reflects the history, moods, ond the events of a single Mountie year. My sincere gratitude must also go to Belmont Studios and to one photographer in particular, Wayne. Last, but most definitely not least, I wont to thank two of the most patient and understanding people in the world, my parents. They have helped me in my constant pursuit to make the 1976 annual one of excellence. For the sake of my fellow students, especially the seniors, I truly hope that we have accomplished this. In closing I want to thank Shades Valley High School for allowing me to be a part of the Mountie Spirit and trusting me to record this of spirit in the files of Mountie memories. 7 year Editor in In compiling this volume of the 1976 TOWER it hos been a challenge to make it on annual of value and interest to the student body ond patrons of our school — a book truly representative of Shades Volley High School. The cooperation of students, teochers, principal, and our advertisers has been greatly appreciated. Without all of you this publication would not have been possible. If we as a staff have presented to you a picture of activities, achievements, campus life, ond marvelous Mountie spirit in a volume which pleases you — our efforts have been worthwhile!
