Sets Standard Of Excellence Concerned as it is with such matters as attendance, discipline and textbook distribution, the vice principal's office requires at its head a man of proven talents and abilities. Such a man is Mr. Virgil Ledbetter, who came to Valley last year from Samford University. A -noted educator, Mr. Ledbetter is listed in Who's Who in American Education. However, his interests are not solely concentrated upon academic pursuits; he is considered an authority on sports, and has earned the distinction of a listing in Who's Who in Contemporary Writers. In Mr. Ledbetter, Shades Valley can boast of both an experienced administrator and a man of keen and diversified interests. Mr. Ledbetter and Mr . Workman confer on an administrative problem. New to the faculty this year is Mrs. Mary Ellen Workman, Valley's Business Manager. An integral part of the administrative staff, she not only shoulders the burden for all school business transactions, but also coordinates the student council and club treasuries. Mrs. Workman quickly proved herself to be a valuable asset to the school's administration, combining drive and energy with a bright personality. 13

Dynamic Administration Dr. Peake Induct new member into Notional Honor Society. As Valley enters its eighteenth year as a high school of national recognition, one becomes cognizant of the involvements and commitments necessary to simply maintain this high level; under the guidance of Dr. Frank A. Peake, Valley continues to progress in the search for knowledge. Dr. Peake has had many honors bestowed upon him, some of the more notable being National President of Kappa Phi Kappa, Professional Education Fraternity, Chairman of the Scholarship Board of the National Honor Society, and Chairman of the State Course of Study Committee. At the present time, he is State Director of the National Commission of Safety Education, on which he serves as state chairman of the membership committee. Counselors Offer Academic Counselors provo invaluable in helping students decide on college destinations. Valley students are fortunate in having an expert staff of counselors who are characterized by dedication—dedication to the school, to their work, and to the students of Shades Valley. Over the years the importance of those people who simplify the transitions from junior high to high school and from high school to college, who administer and supervise Valley's complex testing program, and who still find time to advise students on their varied personal problems. Recognizing the interest of students in college education, each year the counselors direct College Day. This year over forty colleges from all parts of the United States participated. The popularity of the program among students and parents assures College Day a lasting place in Valley tradition. Collogo Day co-ordinators receive last-minute instructions from Mrs. Hightower. 14
