Combine in English Department. Each year during semester exams, Mrs. Mackey’s classes present skits as a dramatic interlude. By writing, producing, and acting themselves, the students reveal amazing ingenuity. Some surprisingly professional productions are put on before the classes, and students hear the combined sounds of laughter and horror from room 107. Charlotte Weaver, Coyle Weaver, Nancy Childrec display dramatic talents in a melodrama of the “Old West. National Recognition and Class Fun Five Valley student entered the National Council of Teachers of English Contest. They are: Ann Wheeler, Jim Thompson, Mary Vines, Dot Siegal, and Linda Ennis. Valley is proud lo acknowledge Lynda Ennis who won the N. C. T. E. award for outstanding achievement in English. Linda who was cited for high quality of writing and literary awareness was one of eight in Alabama to win. Only 860 national winners out of 8000 entrants were chosen. 20

Economics This year Valleiles were made even more aware of the importance of Social Studies. The presidential election quickened the pulse of every student to a prowin responsibility to his country. The unexpected replacement of Khrushchev in Russia reminded us of the need to be well informed. Our Social Studies Department through its courses of history from Ancient to Modern, along with the study of governments and economics strives to give each individual, an understanding of events both past and present and to help him become a more effective citizen.
