o-tgitprs: - Business Manag CI : Kathleen Haigler ume I 4. 1963 Edition alley High School Birmingham. Alabama i Dedication Mr. Alvie Burgett Of all the people who make up our View from the Tower ' there is no one more a part of it than Mr. Alvie Burgett. As building superintendent, Mr. Burgett was a part of Shades Valley before the first class entered it, and through the years he has become vital to the everyday functioning of our school. We may not always realize the many jobs he performs with quiet efficiency all day, but there is nothing so wonderful to us as his smiling face in the presence of such calamities as a door that sticks, a misplaced key, or that locker that just won't lock. With his patient and always cheerful service, Mr. Burgett has endeared himself to students and teachers alike. It is with real affection and appreciation that the 1963 Tower staff dedicates this annual to Mr. Alvie Burgett. Thingi always teem fairer when we look back on them, and it is out of that inaccessible tower of the past that longing leans and beckons. The staff of the 1963 Tower hopes that this annual will recreate for you some of the memorable experiences of this school year. It is our hope that by this View from the Tower you will see Shades Valley in the years to come, through your own special memories, as it was when you were there. 4 Table of Contents ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENTS STUDENT ACTIVITIES PERSONALITIES MAIN EVENTS CLASSES ADVERTISEMENTS 5 The Views from the Tower are as many as there are People . Poet and Realist, dreamer and motivator — Each has his own ideal. There must be a force strong enough to join these varied concepts, to form the single body which a school must be. At Shades Valley this force is our Administration 6 ADMINISTRATION Continuing changes in the nationwide education picture have necessitated greater efforts within our school to maintain a creditable scholastic standard. Throughout the United States, high schools are striving to fulfill requirments to meet the demands for living in today's accelerated society. This is a challenge to both students and administration. It is Dr. Peake's particular responsibility to keep the public, teachers, and students aware of these changes, so that we may realize standards of excellence at Shades Valley. These factors have placed added duties on Dr. Peake as principal, because a multitude of other duties must go on at the same time. Mr. King is Vice Principal in charge of discipline and attendance. Mr. Shelton is the Vice Principal in charge of business affairs and transportation problems. HERMAN KING Assistant Principal Birmingham-Southern, B.A., M.A. FRANK A. PEAKE. And now, to Queen Elizabeth vs. Mary, Queen Scots. The map. Carl, the MAPI The fall dramatic production brought together the 3-Dimen ion of the Fine Art —Drama, Muiic, and Art. 20 The Fine Arts Department gives us the opportunity to realize the inward satisfaction which comes from outward expression. This expression may take many forms: a poem read aloud, a lovely song, a vivid painting, or a piece of instrumental music beautifully executed. Our awareness of this interrelation of the arts will broaden our views and increase our appreciation of them. The Man Who Came to Dinner, Fall '62. 21 Act well your part; there all the honor lies. Thespians Thespis, and ancient Greek, was the first dramatic actor . . . These words from the Thespian initiation ceremony explain the name and nature of the National Thespian Society, which fosters the advancement of dramatic arts in the high school. To become a member, a student must work for at least 100 hours in some phase of the theater: not only acting, but also crews, scenery, publicity and makeup. Thespian teamwork has produced many fine plays at Shades Valley. FIRST ROW, SITTING. L. o R.r Clint Bolte, Choryl Erickson, Donna Doerfler, Howard Wingo, Bobby Gibbs, Carolyn Thomas, Nancy William . We at Shades Valley have the opportunity to study many different languages. Each one has its special charm. Conjugating all those verbs can get tiresome, but the real understanding which we gain from studying the literature and customs of another country is invaluable to our concept of living in 'this world of so many varied cultures. The Mounties soon found that Jones Valley wasn't convinced, however, and the first quarter ended 0-0, with neither team mounting a sustained drive. In the second quarter the Brownies scored a touchdown to put the Mounties behind at the half, 6-0. The inspired Jones Valley team held the Valley backfield in check until the final quarter. With 45 seconds left in the game, halfback Allen Rogers pulled down a 20 yard pass in the end zone to knot the score at 6-6. The Brownies spoiled the Mounties' bid for an opening victory by stopping the attempted run for the point after short of the goal. This began the 1962 season with a 6-6 tie. BOB KERR—175 lb. The keyed up Mounties, looking for an upset, received two bad breaks in the first quarter. Bob Kerr, who had starred in earlier games, was injured early in the game. The Generals then took advantage of a costly Valley penalty to push across their first score. The Mounties were overpowered by a big Lee team which matched a strong running game with a tight defense. The Brummett family smoothed the way. Dear Shades Valley, I too love thee, More and more for every day, And for all that you gave to me Thanks I really want to say. This little word, Thanks! may not sound of much, but it is the best, yes, the only word that comes to my mind when I think of what you, Shades Valley, have meant to me. I came to you as a foreigner, but now I feel at home, as one of your own students. You, Shades Valley, through your students, have given me a good and true picture of what Americans are, and that is just what I came here to learn. I have made many wonderful friends, and I honestly think that the Americans are wonderful people. If I should give the American people a name to describe them, I would call them the smiling people, because I always meet warm, happy smiles everywhere. I do not believe this is because I am a foreign student. I know that it is just the way Americans are. When now I leave you, I hope that I will leave behind in your minds, my friends, an impression of what Denmark and the Danes are like. I hope you will learn to understand a foreign people a little better. I cannot expect to see you again, Valley, but I will always remember you as a dear friend. My hope and prayer shall be that the good Lord may bless you, and all your wonderful teachers and students, and that you may always go onward to work for rights and freedom on earth. Sincerely, your exchange student, Kjeld Grarup, Denmark 136 Kjeld Grarup The bend' gift wai apropos. Practice was necessary ... But good times wore frequent. 137 Summit meeting: Pres. Dumas and Rep. Grarup at S.V.H.S. LARRY HOLT Twirp Court 39 CHUCK BOSWELL The Carol Brewton Award This award is presented in loving memory of the late Carol Brewton who lost her life in an automobile accident, the summer of 1959. For those who may not have known Carol, she was a cheerleader at Shades Valley and always exemplified the Spirit of Valley. The cheerleaders, friends, and relatives have provided since then a plaque to be presented to a senior other than a cheerleader who has such qualities as honesty, willingness to work, loyalty, high morals, and a good attitude. This student will be known as the SPIRIT of SHADES VALLEY. CAROL BREWTON Previous Winners '59-60 BILLY RENNEKER '60-61 BILL DUNHAM 61-62 BECKY DIAL BILL VIEHMAN 1963 Winner 140 The sticky heat of September settled over the 2000 students back in school after a long, restful summer. Streams of new cars, people, books, and clothes shuffled back to Shades Valley, each student struggling with new schedules and teachers, and settling down for the long, exciting year ahead. The first weeks set the pattern for the rest of the year, with many varied activities. Old friendships were renewed, and we survived the first tests and homework of the year. We entered the spirit of Valley at the first pep rallies and games and the Home Ec. Pancake Jamboree. After electing our class officers, we were ready to work. Even the sophomores, aided by their own new counselor, Mrs. Kearce, finally felt comfortably initiated into the mysteries of Shades Valley. The Alabama sun glared fiercely on us at our first assembly in the stadium, as we met Kjeld Grarup, our exchange student from Denmar For the first time, perhaps, we noticed the green pines and dry grass under the hot sun, and wondered how they must look to a newcomer from an older and colder world. i Homecoming Day, gs were the style as we imitated ir mountaineer forebears, udents wore anything Dm potato sacks to blue jeans, id faces under ragged straw hats splayed blacked teeth id freckles. uitars and off-key singing unded through the halls as e took advantage of ie light-hearted holiday spirit id relief from students. en teachers ntered the spirit of fun y dressing as mountaineers nd cancelling assroom discipline. Mount At noon the mountie paraders assembled on the parking lot, throwing suspicous glares at rival floats as they slapped together yards of crepe paper, string, and tin foil, frantically working to meet the judging deadline in the stadium. When, to pep songs and cheers. Mr. and Miss Mountie were chosen from the motley crew of contestants, the parade began with a happy lurch. 144 irade Headed by the beautiful homecoming court, the colorful, noisy assemblage proceeded in the sunshine through Homewood and Mountain Brook. Faithful alumni at the Homecoming Game saw, in addition to the crowning of Queen Anne Wall, an amazing spectacle . . . Shades Valley beat Banks!!! Victorious players and Mounties then crowded into the gym for. a memorable Homecoming Dance. i 145 Please pardon this interruption: The following students . . . 146 The weeks turned into autumn, Filled for the juniors and seniors with plans for college. College day brought 50 representatives from as far away as Harvard to discuss the future with us. Coffee, Anyone??? The Man Who Came to Dinner The unforgettable John and Marsha introduced Valleyites to The Man Who Came to Dinner, the Thespian's Fall production. It was hilarious! The six long weeks of rehearsal were obvious in the polish of Mrs. Walker's production, and the notable performances by Don Wilson, Sheila Russell, and Leath Stigler, among others. One big happy family. Marsha: Oh, John! John: Oh, Marsha!! ... Oh, no! WOWIII Whnt? ME break in line?!? Parting is such sweet sorrow? Everyday Events Massey's Monday Morning Meeting Everyday events form, by far, the biggest part of our memories of this year at Valley. To Seniors, Ann Boleyn and Henry the Eighth were as well known as Castro and the bomb . . . Juniors waded through Moby Dick and The House of Seven Gables, while Sophomores discovered little pleasantries that upperclassmen already knew . . . among them Mrs. Vine's aspirin bottle and the golden heart of Mr. King. Who wants No-doze? Our group had 29% fewer cavities. After School Activities Many Shades Valley students are very active in projects outside the classroom and the school. The Tower Staff haunted the halls until late every afternoon, and the Junior Achievement Bank Directors spent hours of their own time balancing accounts. Shades Valley students have participated in Know Your News, a weekly ETV television panel. Dental Clinic Queen Carleton Lackey was another facet of our activities away from Shades Valley, that of sports and volunteer work. Assemblies Vice president Ernest Clement arranged some excellent assemblies to bring us ideas and people from outside of Valley and Alabama, such as Dr. Mildred Morgan and the representative of the Bell Telephone space laboratories. Home-grown talent was enjoyed, too. The most suspense-filled assemblies were the National Honor Society tappings. Bill Shamblis of Tuscaloosa created an uproar with his political speech, as did the interesting Mrs. Dodd, a former Communist Party member. On a different note, The Home Ec Club presented a delightful fashion show. Senior Life Senior life at Valley began in earnest in December. Cap and gown measurements were taken, and the magazine sales began. In spite of the lure of candy and prizes, it seemed that sales would never get off the ground, until class president Bob Kerr finally whipped up the necessary enthusiasm. The notorious prize candy is probably still uneaten, but seniors had a better reward: a sizeable bankroll, which helped finance the Senior Christmas party. Loud and exuberant, the party heralded two weeks of Christmas vacation and the seniors' last Christmas in high school. The eagerly awaited results of the senior who's who contest were announced on the first Friday in January at the colorful Tower Dance. Towt A Camelot setting lent charm to an innovation at Shades Valley . . . a dance to raise money for the Tower. It was successfully planned and organized by the Tower staff. Three bands offered their services, which were gratefully accepted. loft to Right: Joe Hearn, Ray Edwards, Neal Hearn, Jesse Baucom, Chris Wren, Robert Harwell. ance M. C. Ernest Clements announced to the suspense filled crowd the results of the Who's Who contest. In keeping with the medieval theme, each winner was given a shield or Camelot hat. As an added attraction, Sharon Johnson and Billy Viehman were chosen as Miss and Mr. Shades Valley. left to Right: Don Lipscomb. Rick Mlllor, Rodney Willis, Cliff Morrison. left to Right: John Hanna, Bill Ash ton, Bic Mitchell, David Keller. 153 r w n Twirp (The Woman is Requested to Pay) Week saw girls staggering under double loads of books, carrying boys' lunch trays, and courteously opening doors for them . . . letting boys enjoy all the niceties that girls usually do. Well-muscled slaves were auctioned to the highest bidders . . . this year's sale probably set a record high, with one slave selling for over seventy dollars! 'eek Twirp cops arrested rebellious females, giving them subpoenas to appear in court before the student body. Those who think the days of Kangaroo courts are over should have seen the Twirp Court! Girl fought girl in the Powder-Puff Bowl, and as an added attraction, the crowd was entertained by beautiful, vivacious cheerleaders. The week ended with a Twirp Dance in the gymnasium. 155 Showcase ’63 Showcase '63 was one of the most difficult, and most successful undertakings of the student body. The Fine Arts department presented Wonderful Town, a musical comedy based on the play My Sister Eileen, the story of two midwestern girls in Greenwich Village. The real talent of Shades Valley's students was displayed in this well-organized, well-received production, the result of almost two months of rehearsal. MRS. ZIRKELBACH, FRED W. 227 SV senior Bill Boblnson is very active in Junior Achievement in the Birmingham area. ganization which I shall call the John Doe Society. The offspring of increased pressure for membership in school, community and social activities, members can be identified either by their comformity to accepted standards or by conformity to their own brand of nonconformity. By devoting only a small amount of effort to each purpose in a large variety of activities, they accomplish nothing. In fact, everyone is trying to do the same thing. The group is like a vagabond, in that it does neither harm nor good. However, the most outstanding characteristic of this society is that membership is not desirable. Its appeal is similar to that of a cold. The cold germs threaten everybody, but few people carry out the pre- Salutatory Address A commencement exercise is not merely the beginning of a transition from high school to college. It signifies more than the end of twelve years of necessary education and the first chance to accomplish something on one's own. Tonight is one of the few remaining traditions. It is putting on a cap and gown, marching past the eyes of proud parents and friends, taking in some valuable lesson from the commencement speech, and with jubilant heart receiving the diploma, a concrete reward of earnest study and hard work. We, the Class of 1963, welcome all of you as tonight you share this experience with us. The majority of us will be confronted by a bid for membership in an unambitious, listless or- scribed preventive measures. To fight for the freedom of our personalities is to take an unswerving stand for individualism. During the past three years we have been given the opportunity to express our opinions and to try out our originality. By discussing all sides of current and past issues we have become more liberal in our outlook while our minds have been forming some basic convictions. On the basis of this preliminary background, it is our duty to society to employ our minds and imaginations to the fullest, to encourage the individualist, and to follow consistently the path that has been set before us, with eyes firmly fixed upon our ultimate goal. 228 Valedictory Address Ambition suggests personal advancement or preferment as its end and may be thought of as good or bad. The inability to classify ambition as either one or the other arises because, through personal advancement is said to be the end, the means to the end eludes any one definition. The means to the end—Machiavelli in his book THE PRINCE gives the impression that means do not matter. In his chapter Those who come to power by crime, he discusses ambitious men who have committed the most atrocious cruelties to gain power and ends by advising them on how best to retain their power. Machiavelli's guidebook is entirely didactic; it was never intended to embrace any but those for whom ambition is the sole raison d'etre and to whom other people are of absolutely no concern. Every senior in every high school has proved himself ambitious by working toward graduation. And, he is sincerely grateful to each faculty member for the chance to prove his ambition with a measure of education. He has learned to dislike Machiavellian standards if only because he may be hurt by them. However, there are several things which he may not fully realize. There are in this class alone 532 ambitious people with their own faces, their own ideas, their singular emotions, and habits, pretenses, excuses, rationalizations, desires. We have not all the same potential, but it is as if we had equal shares in a legacy which gives to each human dignity and the right to try. To pursue our interests is important but to tolerate the ambitions of another even if they are conflicting is equally important. We are supposedly civilized, but we cannot claim this distinction if we reduce a peer in order to give ourselves the appearance of advancement or if we treat another with contempt because he is unnecessary to us or because he makes a good stepping stone. Caesar was slain because of his ambition; Lincoln is praised and emulated for his; yet Machiavelli says the means of ambition does not matter. Because I think it does, I would like to end with a paragraph from Night Flight by Antoine de Saint-Exupery: One day an engineer had remarked to Riviere, as they were bending above a wounded man, beside a bridge that was being erected: Is the bridge worth a man's crushed face? Not one of the peasants using the road would ever have wished to mutilate this face so hideously just to save the extra walk to the next bridge. The welfare of the community, the engineer had continued, is just the sum of individual welfares and has no right to look beyond them. And yet, even though human life may be the most precious thing on earth, we always behave as if there were something of higher value than human life u 229 Historian Speech Histories of high school classes always seem to begin with a description of the shy, awkward sophomore year; however, as I recall our. first year at Shades Valley, I am positive that we were models of poise in our new surroundings. We made ourselves known very quickly as we were a large class of 709, the exact number predicted by Jimmy Mann, with the aid of his slide rule, at the age of five. Instead of losing the confidence we had acquired at Junior high, we merely kept adding more as we entered classes and activities with enthusiasm. We were amazed and excited by the new teaching techniques and the extensive curriculum. For those of us who studied a foreign language, the new language laboratories offered the most advanced learning methods. It would not be a truly complete history of our class unless some of the fads were included. In addition to knowing our assigned spelling lessons our sophomore year, we learned, outside the classroom, that a girl or boy was t-u-f-f, not t-o-u-g-h. Ringed purses were also labeled as 'bout cool. The leaders of our class began to emerge as we elected Bill Viehman sophomore class president. He and Clint Bolte, the vice president, worked out a fine arrangement. They merely changed positions our junior year, Clint becoming president, and Bill vice president. By taking leading roles in Thespian productions, by becoming more active in sports, and by distinguishing ourselves in studies, we became more outstanding in school life. The Showcase of 1962 will not easily be forgotten. Many of us became involved with either its writing or its acting. To our delight, it was a tremendous success. Our roots at Shades Valley not only grew deeper, but they also spread in many directions. We learned that school spirit included upholding Valley's reputation in all fields. The junior year rages were charm bracelets, un- rivaled in their importance. For a while though, it looked as if scarab bracelets or circle pins might win first place. It also seemed that some girls were taking the advertisement Only Her Hairdresser Knows too seriously. The student council election in the spring was another high point. The campaign for Larry Dumas, student council president, was overwhelming, to say the least. With that election our class began to realize what lay ahead in the senior year. Clubs chose new officers, and the weight of responsibility was clearly in our hands. This year we have truly flourished. After we elected Bob Kerr president of the class and then received our class rings, nothing could daunt us. In football, Co-Captains Chris Collins and Benny Winford, with other husky Mounties, led us to an 8-1-1 record. We won an exciting homecoming game, the first time since our arrival at Valley. We also triumphed at the Dental Clinic and as a reward, the football team and the cheerleaders 230 went to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. Our basketball team also played hard, leading us on to victory. The College Day Program, greatly expanded, was headed very efficiently by Clint Bolte, with Jo Ann Hess as a co-chairman. Although we, as seniors, had nearly decided what college we wished to attend, the plan proved very informative. Dramatically, we had many aspiring actors who learned the tools of their trade from the capable direction of Mrs. Walker. Musically, we sang and played loudly and clearly. Our band, led by Gaines Smith, Drum Major, had the high honor of being invited to play in the Alabama Inaugural Parade. Our football games would not have been the same without their spirited music. The concert choir also added much to our enjoyment with their various concerts given during the year. Showcase of 1963 required the combined efforts of the dramatic, musical, and art departments, and the wholehearted support of the student body. Elise McCauley drew the winning advertisement, used as publicity for the production, Wonderful Town. A musical comedy is always difficult to coordinate, yet Wonderful Town exceeded everyone's hopes for success. Intellectually, we took great strides. The science and math classes of Mrs. Huffman, Miss Whaley, Mr. Walker, and Mr. Clements were well-populated, at least the first semester! Our large number of National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists is another achievement of which we should be proud. Most significant though is the fact that we have produced not mere pedants but promising scholars. Our senior parties should not be omitted. At our Christmas party, we could not decide which of the two bands was the better. The Senior Prom will also be a happy memory along with the swimming party. I know that we hope our class gift will be enjoyed by many future senior classes, for it was the painting of the seventeen senior homerooms. Money was also donated toward a trophy case, new curtains for the auditorium stage, and the P.T.A. scholarship. As our last year at this school draws to a close, our self-assurance is such that we could almost call Mr. King Sky. Notice, I said almost. It was a privilege to write our class history because as I wrote, I became more and more aware of what we had accomplished. I saw with pride how effectively the varied interests of our fellow students combined for the good name of the Senior Class of 1963. Susan Levin Class Historian 231 not working, resulting in the prize utterance from the office, We are having trouble with the intercoms so any room not receiving this announcement, please notify us at once. Colored socks used to be permissible only when left in the bureau drawer. This year, colored Gold Cup socks became the rage, and 15,647 different ones were worn to school. That comes to a grand total of 7,323.5 pairs. (Ooops!) Incidentally, by careful rotation of his 10 pairs of Gold Cups, Avery Sloan has not worn white socks a single day this year. The terrible after-school traffic problem remains just that ... a problem! 953 scraped fenders, 245 dirty looks, and 722 angry words were exchanged this past year. To add to the general confusion in maneuvering, 76 gaping potholes have appeared in the back parking lot. All in all, the simple act of leaving school is, at best, a courageous venture. Statistician’s Speech Webster defines the word statistics as the science which deals with the collection, classification, and use of numerical facts or data, bearing on a subject or matter. Well ... all right. Here I sit, sharpened pencil in one hand, slide rule in the other, and Univac in the corner, to bring you the official statistics of the 1963 Shades Valley Seniors, guaranteed to be 99 and 44 100% accurate. Jimmy Westbrook has been absent 53 days this year, and left school early an additional 39 times. Anyone wishing to contact him. though, will find him at Areail's Drug Store between 3:00 and 5:00 P.M., day in and day out, rain or shine. 2,952 genuine Gant shirts were worn to school this year, and of those, playful girls and jealous boys tore the loops off 77, INCLUDING THE LOOP ON MY LONE GANT! For 5 days, 17 of the school's intercoms were The second six-weeks of school, Billy Given made 2.85 gallons of beer for his Physics project. Still profiting from his newly acquired knowledge, he is the (moon) shining example of learning can be fun! The newly organized card section at the football games tried hard. By estimating all the conceivable combinations possible, it has been calculated that, by the Law of Averages, at least once in the next 12,492,376,481 tries they will form a legible GO TEAM. Congratulations must go to Chris Collins who, in 3 years at Valley, has broken in the lunch line 534 times and has been caught only 4 of those times. The lunchroom bouncer Mrs. Leake, has caught 3061 other unfortunate line breakers this year and sent them back past a total of 55,098 people to the end of the line. The frequently heard announcement, A late 232 school bus has just arrived. Teachers please admit . . . etc. etc. ' has been made on 182 occasions this year. Seems rather odd, but 99.788$- of the bus breakdowns occurred on the way TO school, while only 0.211% occurred LEAVING school. Jim Califf used 746 dabs of Brylcream this past year, averaging 2.04 dabs per day. He snowed 28 girls and ended up going steady with Guynelle Dillard. Watch it now, just a little dab will do ya. The 527 Seniors of Shades Valley all have assigned auditorium seats. Yet, 72 were absent the day of assignment, 261 were not listening, 148 promptly forgot, 42 preferred other seats and moved. Of the 4 remaining Seniors, 3 know exactly where their assigned seats are, and the other one has yet to find the auditorium. For whom the bell tolls—the school bell to end or begin classes has rung 3,928 times this year, interrupting 62 of Miss Whaley's pop tests, 104 naps, 78 budding hallway romances, and considerably shortened 1,570 lunches. The ringing of the bell has also resulted in 6,677 detention halls. We Seniors sold magazine subscriptions amounting to $7,432.53, $5,678.21 to our parents and the remaining $1,754.32 to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and next-door neighbors. Funniest thing, but the rumor that the baseball team might play 3 games in Florida resulted in an unheard of 1048 boys signing up. Twirp Week was full of good statistics. At the Slave Auction, Frank Patterson was bought for $72.84, which must be some sort of record. Looking at it from another angle though, that comes to 44c a pound, a pretty good bargain these days. Sixty-five girls bravely played in the Powder-Puff Bowl. Various ones suffered a total of 225 broken fingernails, 65 ruined bouffant hairdos, 3 pulled muscles, and 1543 bruises. Speaking of the Presidential program for Physical Fitness, we students have 35 minutes between classes to walk an average of 10.8 miles per day! Some interesting miscellaneous statistics gathered were: Fred Boswell has flexed all 128 of his muscles in unison 404 times this school year; Jim Selman has flashed his darling dimples on 377 occasions; and Pat Stevens has worn dark glasses 365 days this year. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to bring you these figures of your high school life and hope each of you succeed in whatever you may attempt to do. Miles Watkins 233 Eddie Finch, Class Lawyer, 1963 Beth Philips leave their abounding ability to flirt with any; and every boy to Pat Ryder, Lynn Finch, Judy Lanier, Lynn Gregory, and Terry Hazzard. Billy Viehman leaves his basketball shoes to Cannonball Brown in hopes that he will wear them well. The Fabulous Frenchman and his red-on-head good buddy Larry likewise leave their football shoes to Tommy Hill, Buddy Hawkins, and Mike Stanberry. Anne Wall leaves her ability to win beauty contests to Carleton Lackey. The three musketeers leave a slightly broken nose (it was bad enough before that. Bob), a pair of massive legs (Chris Collins), and a bark (Bill Meadows alias the bulldog) to anyone who dares to try to duplicate them. Tommy McLeod's book. It's Best to Keep Them in Separate Schools, goes to Mary Clair McMeans. The first period honors class leaves Miss Mackey to guide those who follow us along an honorable path. Sharon Johnson, Clint Bolte, Billy Viehman, and Doug Arendall leave their good citizenship records to Richard McPhearson, Duans Coshatt, and George Morgan in hopes that they will carry on the traditions they have left behind. 234 The Last Will and Testament WE, the Senior Class of 1963, of Shades Valley High School do hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament in form and manner as follows: To the Class of 1964 we bestow our richest treasures, our many senior privileges. First, there is the right to try to leave the auditorium first and then there is . . . well, there are too many to mention; so we shall now proceed to the personal bestowals which have been awarded to the individuals with complete consideration to the fitness of the recipient. Bob Kerr, Benny Winford, Joe Hall, and Mr. Parker leave a small per cent (but a large quantity) of their snow to Jim Waitzman, Joe Benson, and Frankie Patterson. Tearfully, Dana Robertson, Warren Bailes, and Mike Batchelor leave Chuck Boswell, Mike Stanberry, and Michele Crow the hope that the future seniors will keep away from them. Chris Collins, Tommy Faulkner, Henry Wurtle, Jimmy Westbrook, and even Jimmy Hard leave behind Charley Fisher, Nicky Pounds, Hugh Alford, and Bill Trotter, and others to struggle through another year at dear old Valley. Patsy Tate, Holly Joyner, Diana Rhodes, and The Key Club Seniors leave Coach Long to those who will further his education in parliamentary procedure. Brenda Lind, Lee Wilson, Patti McGuire, and Lynn Weinstein leave their football abilities to future Valley stars Barbara Bresler, Joanie Aarons, Carolyn Ruffin, and Ginny Anderson. Judy Shiland, Virginia Lavallet, and Muffin Luks leave their collapsible locker to Mr. Burgett. Jim Selman leaves his suthern drawl to Norman Secor. Joe Jones and Tommy Hoover leave their gold-cuppers, Gants, Madras, and Weejins to Lee Hilbert, Bill Brawer, and Keith Myers; likewise Carolyn Markstein and Susan Lindstrom leave their exquisite tastes to Julie Welch, Elizabeth McDavid, and Nan Tucker. Last but not least, we the Seniors leave Shades Valley, a place of many memories, pleasant and unpleasant, to those who follow. We may not realize it but it will become evident later that we are giving up a most treasured possession. In witness whereof; We the Class of 1963 have set our hand and seal on this our last will and testament. Class Poem THOSE WONDERFUL YEARS Now we are leaving, We're looking ahead. One day we'll be turning These pages instead Remember those wonderful sophomore years. Bringing back memories with laughter and tears? Getting to know you could have been our theme song. The halls were immense and directions all wrong And up in the tower sat the Shades Valley choir. Raising their voices higher and higher, Trying to drown out the band who played louder, and the current rage was space —that was outer. Then the respect of the whole school rose As we became Juniors, Although there were those Who didn't. Pep rallies, football games, basketball, and such, Homework, exams, Really so much Was crammed into those happy, hectic hours, We hardly had time for our daily showers. (except sometimes—it was absolutely necessary.) As Seniors I must say we've done pretty well. Now we own the school ... I guess you can tell. Proms and class parties we look forward to. Passes and detention halls are part of it, too. (and speaking of two . . . that's how many Senior privileges we have left.) Raccoon collars are really the thing We wear them in summer, winter or spring. But all of this nonsense is getting me down. I really feel sad and I don't want to clown. Here at Shades Valley, friends we have been, Friends we will part, and as friends meet again. We leave you Shades Valley, happy and free, But never fear, Valley, we won't forget thee. Memories of thee will haunt us forever, Giving us pleasure, unhappiness never. And someday. Shades Valley, your luck you will see In having such a GRAND class as old '63. 235 Senior Class Prophecy 1962-1963 Let me gather my tea leaves, fortune cookies, and crystall ball and I will attempt to foretell the future. It seems Shades Valley was the stepping stone for many successful businessmen and women. Nicky Greenwood is a popcorn vender at basketball games; Jim Califf and Bill Teague sell guitar strings, usually to themselves; Warren Bailes sells leaches In the same pet store where Anne Sisson sells turtles; and Jimbo Hall, Elise McCauley, Lynn Weinstein, Howard Green, and Kathleen Haigler are still trying to sell ads for the TOWER. Speaking of selling, Sherron McCord has a few hundred copies of the RED and BLACK to sell. The business world has not recovered from Carl Sos-nin, a retired multi-billionaire at the age of 28 (He made his money by selling his conceit). Dianna Rhodes made her money by selling the formula for the pep pills she must have taken in high school. In the literary world, we see the Top Ten reading list boasts many books written by Valleyites. The best sellers are, The Art of Breaking a Foot by Katherine Boone; My Care Free World by Susan Levin; Calories Do Count by Helen Edson. Several books have been rewritten by Valley grads. Susanna Benedict revised Robert's Rules of Order, due to her experience with the Pep Squad. Tommy Haggerty has rewritten the economics book to include all the what nots, and the Merit Scholarship Test was rewritten by Ardis Rundlett. Kathy Henry, designing women's clothes, is a boon to the fashion circle. Her top model is Nell O'Kelly who gained her fame in a high school fashion show. Their firm caters to such Best Dressed Women as Susan Lindstrom, Carolyn Markstein, Judy Shiland, and Jo Ann Hess. These women also are the customers of two successful hair stylists. Hood Yeilding and Betsy Acton. Ronnie Egge and Tommy Hoover, the tops in the men's fashion world, have added a dozen new colors to their sock collection. On the political side we see, why yes, the redhead, Larry Dumas occupying the rocking chair. His touch football team includes Bill McIntyre, Ken Peters, Grant Murphree, and Benny Winford. They have lost every game because of their coaching by George Babakitis and Mike Batchelor, a Y.M.C.A. veteran. The pretty cheerleaders are Dale Morgan and Patsy Tate. Larry has hired lawyer Eddie Finch to advise him on the gambling racket set up by Jack Payne, Bill Given, Murry Dixon, and George Simpson. However, due to the efficient police force of Van Krebs, Gary Griffith, Holly Joyner, Marsha Currie, and Kay Staple-ton, law and order is insured. A real problem is the gang. Paul Salter, Harry Ruffin, Walter Wallace, Paula Stringfellow, and Mary Pat Williams decided to band together after seeing West Side Story. The stage is not lacking talent. Because of her part in the Christmas party for Kjeld, Danna Robertson has been signed to a starring roll at Disneyland. The T.V. world has a new program, C.A. and the Boys starring Clint Bolte, Paul Cunningham, Tommy Hooten, and Bill Smith. The medic show has returned with Doctor Ben Davies and his efficient staff of nurses, Drenda Walker, Marsha Burgin, Ruth Grant, and Connie Braswell. It is the task of the crew to care for the anemic patients Joe Beacham, Jim Powell, and Tommy Nunnelley. The Fine Arts profits from a good group of stars which includes Beth Phillips playing the piano, and Virginia Lavallet and Pat Acton signing ballet contracts. The stage is experiencing wonderful performances by Sam Ratcliffe, Shelia Russell, and Don Wilson. Don hopes silent movies come back since he lost his voice in a high school play. I see a talent scout saw the production, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and signed Janet Wuehrmann for the movie Cleopatra Part II, I see she was type cast again. The stars of the en- 236 tertainmenf world are the Three Stooges ' Chris Moe Collins, Bob Curly Kerr, and Bill Larry Meadows. It is all their manager Patti McGuire, can do to keep them in line. Bill Anderson is the M.C. on a new comedy show, hosting such greats as laughing Edwin Eldredge, smiling Miles Watkins, and Muffin Luks. Donny Andrews tried T.V. but he talked so slowly that the commercials interrupted his sentence. He is now perfecting his 1,001 other ways to make a million. The future holds great promise for the record industry. Smash hits are I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, by Wanda Shaw; Roadrunner, by Jimmy Westbrook; and the top pop, The Pitter-Patter of Dancing Feet, by Don Rich. Athletes? Shades Valley produced the greatest. Margo Mosely and Page Nelson are the world's best women's wrestling team; while Jimmy Hard has reached great heights as a boxer, getting his start in a Sophomore P.E. class. Mike Warren, Allen Rogers, and Tex Hawley have run farther and faster than anyone, and as soon as they are found, they will receive their award. Gina Montgomery has added another charm to her bracelet for Best Volleyball Player, while Guynelle Dillard is another of those terrible Georgia Tech football players. Margaret Evans is training the Olympic Swimming team headed by Jack Barnacastle, while Frances Tully is the water skiing coach. Retha Rozelle, retired baton twirler, is looking for a method of removing the baton she glued to her fingers. I see several Valleyites have made unique collections. Sharon Johnson has collected 101 honors for her many assets; Joy Willen has collected 333 different hair styles; and Jesse Baucom has gathered 59 broken drum sticks. Jimmy Hill, Jumping Jack Riley, and Johnny Phelps have received many awards for being such dedicated fans. After their stay at Shades Valley, Ernest Clement and Johnny Smith have gained 6 college degrees each, while David Vaughan has collected 21 college applications. (It seems he can't make up his mind where, how, or when he will make his fortune.) While on the subject of collections, I see Bobby Vick has dated 35 lovesick girls. This and other worlds have seen the Valley travelers. Doug Arendall, Sally Patton, Vicki Eldredge, and Mary Alice Hollis have searched for a place that doesn't publish an annual. This is an age of speed, as Pat Cobb and Nancy Green have made a round trip to Indian Springs in 30 minutes. Billy Ruth Stewart has taken driving lessons from Bill Trotter so she can go to the University on an I'm going to the library excuse. Lyle Key is a very happy engineer ... a train engineer, that is. However, since there isn’t a railroad line to Auburn, Suzanne McCool, Patty Wesson, and Iris DeShazo are still looking for rides. Our travelers have reached Africa, home of the new Tarzan, Fred Boswell. Missionary Massey Gentry has set up Morning Watch already. (I see Lee Gallman has the natives standing and singing!) The deep woods abound with hunters. Charles Feigner is searching for vultures; Red Robinson is searching for girls; Byrne Abele and Charles Horn are shooting crows; and Dan Fulton is shooting the bull. To further Valley's friendly spirit, Susan Craig and Martha Crais are our goodwill ambassadors to outer space, while Anne Wall is in Alaska selling refrigerators to the Eskimos . . . (Who could refuse???) Grady Lloyd and Joe Sandy Lane Hall are now residing in Panama City. Travel has done wonders for some people. Martha Ellen Ensey can now cover the world and visit her fans. Expanding to the Middle East, I see Tommy McLeod, Henry Wurtele, Pierre Tourney, and Larry Holt have gone into business for themselves, owning and operating a night club. In the other world, I see that Ray Edwards has brought his own radio station to the nearby planets, and Buddy Edwards is shipping out Care packages of chewing gum. It's hard to see such a distant future, but I see a new faculty at Shades Valley. Bill Burgess has taken Mrs. Leake's job in the lunchroom; Bill Fitz-gibbon is a progressive new Physics teacher; Joel Heffler is teaching Solid; Mary Ann Stucky has replaced Mrs. Daniels and has her own stop watch; the Home Ec. department is under the direction of Gloria Wilson,- and Kjeld Grarup is teaching people how to pronounce his name. 237 Speaking of teaching, Cathy Duff and Barbara Baldock are having great success teaching the boys how to talk with a Northern accent, however, they are having a little difficulty getting Jim Selman to change Fiis slow drawl. I can safely say the future holds many changes. The dictionary will be revised so that I.B.M. will stand for Ingrid (Kraus), Bernard (Yomtov) and Mann (Jimmy). However, their competitor, Jimmy Grigsby, considers it crip and does the computations in his head. It is an easy matter to tell from my sooth-saying equipment that the future holds the answer to the many dreams and desires. However I don't need a Ouija board or a crystal ball to see that the Class of 1963 will be a great success. I wish the best of luck to each of you. BILL VIEHMAN Claw Prophet 238 Bill Viehman Class Prophet CLASS MUSICIANS BETH PHILLIPS—Piano SAM RATCLIFFE-Voice BILL TEAGUE-Goitar WE We, the young, are a question which seems to have no answer. We are self entered and selfish, and yet terribly concerned with the Problems of Mankind. We want to fly high and far away from the bonds of childhood, but we cling to their security and warmth. We are often bored—except in those Rare and aching moments when all the Wonder of Living surprises and overwhelms us. When this happens, in the magic of our own personal revelation, we think we hold all Knowledge in our hands. We are all looking for Something- Something unnamed and indefinable but worthwhile and wonderful and we will know it when we find it . . . And sometimes we don't even want to find it, really, for then the excitement of the search is gone. We are tired of being called the World Leaders of Tomorrow, for Ours is a world of the present, but we are convinced that we have the answers for the future. We are a question which seems to have no answer. . . but We, the young, in spite of doubts and contradictions, possess a Wisdom infinitely greater than anyone else can know, and Greater than we shall ever know again. 239 Juniors Junior Class Officers President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Activities Chairmen JIM HUTTO FRANK PATTERSON DONNA DAVENPORT RICK MIDDLETON GEORGE DAILY DIANNE HOOTEN SEATEO: Donna Davenport, Jim Hutto, Dianne Hooten STANDING: George Daily, Rick Middleton, Frank Pafterton 240 Anne Acton Jerry Acton Carolyn Adams Dana Adams Barbara Jane Alders Hugh Alford Wilbur Allen Jay Alsbrooks Gail Alverson Jay Alvis Judy Anderson Kathy Anderson Margaret Andrews Phil Andrus Missy Angell Laura Ardillo Joy Armstrong Kay Armstrong Judy Arnold Connie Ashley Bill Ashton Lucy Ashton Cynthia Atkerson Alice Atkins Bob Atkins David Atkins Linda Atkinson Martha Backus Rita Bailey Sheila Bailey Eberle Baker Lee Barco William Barker Gwyndolyn Barnard Connie Jay Barrington Brenda Ann Bearden Judith Bearden Patricia Bearden Irving Beiman Dick Bell Joe Benson Donald Bentz Maxine Bergeron Ann Lloyd Berry William Thomas Berry Delia Ann Best Sue Diane Betras Brenda Gail Billingsley Rosemary Bishop Ellinor Black Clara Mae Blacknall Cecil Carl Blackwell Mike Allen Blake Barbara Joan Blatt Bruce Blatzner Michael Bohannon Vernice Kay Boles Rita Jeanne Bomar Evelyn Ann Bonds Cheryl Leigh Bonnecarrere Margaret Carol Borden Gary Alan Boren Charles Albert Boswell Doris Jean Botnik Richard Jeter Bradshaw Nancy Marie Bragg Juniors Suzanne Elizabeth Brandler Gene Brashier Catherine Ann Braune James Michael Brennan Barbara Ann Bresler Oliver Frank Brock Roberta Leigh Brooks Beverly Ann Brown Dickie Brown Roy Lee Brown William Brown Mary Ann Brunson John Ellsbury Buell Richard Brown Jean Elizabeth Burger Nancy Roby Burns Barbara Lynn Burns James Burton H. We wish for you many towers in life—pinnacles of achievement, retreats for contemplation or creation, vantage points from which you can gain clear perspective of the world around you. Life at Valley stretches your appreciation of life. From your Tower you have seen Big Ben in London, striking the hour for the English, the sports tower encouraging health and sportsmanship, and many not-so-serious high spots. You have seen the tower of outstanding personalities in school-a dream tower for most of us. May your view from the tower at Valley be pleasant in 1963, 1964, 1965, and whenever you visit. And may the knowledge that your friends are backing you, strengthen you in whatever jousts are ahead. Mr. Clement,. Kathleen Haig|er, Katherine Boon. TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY
