B. Nichols. Through over-use, even the best words of praise have lost their original nobility. We, the graduating class, want to express a fitting tribute to him. However, Mr. Nichols himself has erected a better tribute than we can phrase. In his six years of devoted leadership, he has made Shades-Cahaba more than a fine school. It has become a way of life. We have received preparation for college and for life beyond college. We have learned to live in a democracy because we have been taught democratically. The spirit of Shades-Cahaba wonderfully reflects his personanity, and it will have a definite influence on our futures. Our success stories will be chapters in his. M M 825 W! MR. R. Each person sees within his soul A diff'rence in the goal. -Yet life is what we make it! O, some will want to gain great wealth, Not sparing even health, Or nerves to live in luxury And banish poverty, But satisfied, I know, they'll not E'er be with what they've got. -Yes life is what we make it! To rule will be the dream of some In life that is to come. Orders they'1l give to be obeyed By men of lesser grade Who'd rather submit than to fight A man of so much might. -Still life is what we make it! Other's desires will be fulfilled When they at last are skilled In something which they like to do, An art in which they too Excel. Then they will be content With their accomplishment -For life is what we make it! Peace represents success to few, Plus friends forever trueg Happiness comprizes all their aim, Excluding wealth and fame. To anyone who needs they'1l give, For life alone they'll live -And life is what we make it! Jimmy Speed. Mosr POPULAR ' JOHN Poo-SER. -Ame HOGAN NAARGIE Hm.. Career 6121. - -IARLQSHOGUE. When other in- structors are Winding up a days work, he is just getting into the swing of his. His years spent in working with young people have made the team members look on him as 'one of them', rather than as a member of the faculty. Obviously, his method works, for he has turned out more cham- pionship material than any other coach in the county. It is just as important to him to teach the boys the moral rules of sports as to turn out a winning team. The student body would like to cast our vote for Piggy as the all time all-American high school coach. Coaches Mitchell Murphrey, Barrington. 8lfUd,I 6! df oZ7CL:5lf.! W JA- Wm .ff CAPTAIN BILL KNOX: Bill will always be looked upon by his team-mates as one of the most outstanding centers in the school's history. He possessed that rare quality to be able to play best when the going got tough. His spirit set an example that stirred not only the team, but the supporters as well. His graduation will leave s hard gap to fill in the front wall. ALTERNATE CAPTAIN TOMMY TROTTER: Although Tommy was hampered by injuries during the first of the season, he came through in great style. His pass receiving, combined with his fine defensive play, made him one of the county's most feared ends. His all around good ball playing will be missed greatly next year. JERRY WILKINS: Jerry was the plunging fullback of the squad, His hard running made him the team's most consistant yardage gainer. Whenever the team was in a jam, his kicking could always be relied on to pull them out. GROVER WHITE: Grover was the Iine's master at defensive playing. His hard charging and never-say-die spirit broke up many of the opponents drives before they got going. Everyone will hate to see Grover leave this year texcopt the boys who played in front of him.J JIMMY SPEED: Jim received awards for being both first string all-county guard and for the best scholastic standing on the team. He played his best from tht starting whistle to the last play. This was Jimmy's last year. BOBBY CHRISTIANSEN: Little Chief was one of the team's highest scorers. His hard running, sure tackling, quick thinking made up for his luck of size. Bobby was the second and last of the Christiansen halfbacks at Cahaha. JIMMY DOYLE: Jimmy did a. fine job of holding down the offensive right tackle position. His hard blocking was a great asset to the team. Jim was one of those Players who really put his heart into his work and, consequently, worked his way into the hearts of his teammates. Q A as or .1 gg W Q ore JM- en . . ABBOTT WILLIAMS: Shorty played end on the offense and halfback on the de- fence. His speed and height made him an excellent pass receiver. Although a back injury cut his season short, he was still one of the most valuable and best liked boys on the team. CHARLES HOGUE: Charly's deceptive ball handling and hard running made him a valuable cog in the backfield gears. His passing was a deciding factor in many tight squeezes. This was his last year with the squad. SAM ROMANO: Whether on offense or defence. Sam was one of Cahaba's greatest ends. His sbeady persistance, in practice and in games, earned him honorable men- tion on the all-county team. This season rounded out his fourth year of varsity ball at Cahaba. PAUL BILLINGS: Paul is one of the few football players ever to make all-state and all-county for two consecutive years. Sag, combined size, power, determina- tion, and an educated toe and turned them into Cahaba's best all time tackle. Here's luck to him at Vandy. BILLY HAYNES: Bill was one of the most outstanding members of the second string. His game action this year showed great promise. He is expected to be the main-stay of the front wall next year. DALMOUS HALTIWANGER: Dalmous is the only returning member of this years first string. He was one of the county's fleetest halfbacks. His performance at Northport will long be remembered. His experience will be a great asset to next years squad. WALTER McCULLERS: Walter returned from service to play great ball at right guard. Although this was his first year of football, it didn't take him long to build a reputation as the teams hardest fighting lineman. e offa, Ogne !9f1fw!
