DEDICATED MISS ANNIE LOIS BORDERS Who with wise hand in guidance and loving heart in counsel, has played an outstanding role in molding the lives of students of Shades Cahaba High School. Since coming to Cahaba as a Senior English teacher, Miss Borders has, at one time or another, been girls adviser, sponsored several Literary clubs, the Journalism Club, and the Mountaineer. Each year she has sponsored the publication of the Owl, which would not be possible without her untiring efforts. This popular teacher has also been active in Ameri- can Association of University Women work, holding several offices and serving on numerous committees. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gam- ma, a national professional soririty for outstanding women in the field of education. Yet with all this, she is ever ready to lend an understanding eat' to the problems of any student and to give encouragement and guid- ance. She is at all times a true teacher, inspiring students to grasp the splendor of beauty in literature and the facts of grammarg thus making learning a joyous adventure. Yet more than a teacher, she is a person- ality, giving inspiration to all who are privileged to sit in her classes or to work with her, So this 1946 edition of the Owl is lovingly dedicated in recognition of her years of valuable service and of the love and deep appreciation which the students of Shades Cahaba feel toward her. Besides being a coach of finest quality, we will remem- ber him for his advice and friendship. His work as a builder of bodies has been a very impor- tant part in our school lives. He will always be our coach of the year. COACH MURPHY This even tempered, easy go- ing Mississippian from Green- wood, has proved both an in- spiration to our track squad this season, the buckshots, and an incalcuable asset to our head coach. Under his guid- ance Cahaba's first track team became a reality. Minor was our second conquest and again Cahaba was victor- ious, letting the seeond string carry much of the load. The Mounties next .journeyed to Legion Field and before 8,000 spectators conquered a high- ly favored Woodlawn eleven, Christiansen's punt- ing made him the star of the back field while Cowart and Acton ran him a close second. Cahaha's only defeat of the season was at the hands of Huey- town, an undefeated team, Although the Moun- ties lost, much credit is due them for the hard playing they did. Homecoming featured Jones Valley as Cahaba's foe while the Mounties prov- ed to be just a little too much for their opponents. The Phillips Red Raiders came to Cahaba in hopes to revenge their defeat of last year but our boys just wouldn't give in, Christiansen will long lie remembered for his 70 yard dash on the first play of the game scoring a touchdown. North- port's Wild Cats, a supposedly strong team, were the next victims. The Cats were completely help- less until the final period. Cowart, completed a pass to .Iohnson who made a spectacular touch- down, The second string saw quite a hit of play in the game against Mortimer Jordan who simply didn't have a chance. The final game was played on a mud and rain soaked field and Cahaba downed St. Bernard to end a season of eight wins and one loss. BURT STANFORD All County Center, Burt Stanford with the Shades Valley Press Trophy for the most valuable player at Shades Cahaba this year. Denny, another one of the graduating seniors, came into Cahaba's lime- light his last year and teamed with Jack Edwards to give Cahaba as fine a pair of guards as any other school. PHILLIPS---CAHABA With the hard work of Coach Mitchell, Coach Murphy and the will of the boys The Mountaineers won over the highly favored Phillips team with a score of 21 to 7. R. B. Cahaba bounced back to smother Hewitt at Hewitt 11-1. The next week Leeds fell 14-0. Cahaba journeyed to Jeffco and didn't fare so well getting beat again 5-2. Cowart's homer was the blow of the game. Leeds again was victim of Cahaba's attack 8-5. And in the three-time rained out game, Cahaba entered the playoff on a 7-5 win over Hewitt. The CHEERLEADERS Cahaba's Cheerleaders not only urged the students on with their pep meetings and unusual stunts, but also put needed pep into the football players.
