Class History On a warm September morning in 1941, a new first grade, confused and scared, started on their long journey with twelve years of education ahead of them. ln our first year, we were under the dir- ection of Miss June Prentice. This year we were at West Point because Shadeland School had burned in June. Out of the senior class graduating this year, four started together in the first grade. They are Eva Jane McDowell, Mary Louise Kuipers, Ruth Ann Peyton, and Dick Giltner. ln our second year we came to a brand new school called Shadeland High School. Miss June Prentice also came with us. Twin boys, Jack and Jim Mays, and Bonnie Riley joined us this year. During our third and fourth grades, Mrs. Dorothy Macy was our teacher. Dora Mae Hockema joined us this year. Mr. Clarence Mitchell taught us in our fifth and sixth grades. Delores White joined us in the sprin of the fifth grade and Ruth Haynes, Alice Remsburg, and Donald Graves during the sixth grade. This year we began to think about getting to go upstairs. ln the fall of 1947, we moved upstairs into a big assembly. Here we had different rooms and dif- ferent teachers for every class. Gee, those seniors scared usl Wonder if we will ever be a great big person like that? Miss Mary Jane Sholty was our class sponsor and Mr. Orville Pearl, sponsored us in the eighth grade. Finally we became green freshmen . This year Sara Roche, Mary Ann Roth, Lloyd Bailey, Roxie Ann Bratton, Charles Clark, Tom Conrad, Byron Evans, Don Parker, Barbara Phillips, and Frank Goodman joined us. Our class officers were the following: Eva Jane McDowell, president, Ruth Haynes, vice-president, Marilyn Brown, secretary-treasurer, Ruth Ann Peyton, reporter. Our sponsor was Mrs. Viola Rosen. We lost Lucille Childress, Marilyn Brown, and Margaret Hawkins. The following year we became sophomores. This year we received our crimson and gray sweaters. Our sponsor was Mr. Don Hampton. The following officers were elected: Dick Giltner, president, Eva Jane McDowell, vice-president, Ruth Haynes, secretary-treasurer, and Sara Roche, reporter. Cheerie Amos and Robert Dye entered our class and Lester Martin joined us in the middle of this year. We lost Lloyd Bailey, Tom Conrad, Robert Dye, Charles Clark, Madeline Dawson, Byron Evans, Don Parker and Harold Stillions. ln our junior year we became great sellers of ice cream. We presented the play, We Shook the Family Tree , under the direction of Mrs. Jane Packard. This year we received our class rings. On April 26, we honored the seniors with a dinner and dance with the Blue Notes , a four piece band, furnishing the dance music. We chose our motto as: Friendship is the only cement that will hold the world together . Our class flower is the sweet pea. Mrs. Beulah Craw was our sponsor with Jack Mays, president, Dick Giltner, vice-president, Ruth Ann Peyton, secretary, Mary Louise Kuipers, treasurer, Don Welsh, assistant treasurer, and Ruth Haynes, reporter. This year we gained Don Welsh and lost Virginia Gee, Barbara Phillips, Regina Sexton, and Bill James. 16
