Carolyn Heemstra joined us in January making 13 students. Our first grade was under the guldance and direction of Miss Esther Bauer. Five of our first grade students are now graduating together. They are Edna Blain, Barbara Morris, Dolores Hamilton Marie Gee and Carolyn Heemstra. On June 23, 1941 our school building burned,,so most of our class went to West Point for our second grade. We were under the direction of Mrs. Floyd Weaver, during these years we gained and lost many students. A few years elapsed and we reached the seventh grade and we were ln the big -- big -- assembly. During our seventh grade we took an educational and pleasure trip to Chicago. The eighth grade went also with Mrs. Craw and Mr. Pearl as our sponsors. In the eighth grade twin girls, Llnda and Lula Belle Gates, joined our class making our class a total of sixteen pupils- Finally our Freshman year arrived. My goodness, how bashful we were. Although we were green, we tried earnestly to increase our knowledge. This year June Connelly, Gene Rooze and Marte Gee joined us from Elston. We chose our class officers as follows: President, Mary Louis McCarty, Vice President, Dolores Hamilton, Secretary and Treasurer, Carolyn Heemstrag Reporter, June Connelly. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Rosen. The last part of the year we lost the Gates twins. In our Sophomore year we chose our pretty bright red and white class sweaters. Our class officers were as follows: President, Sheldon Stillionsg Vice President, Dudley Binfordg Secretary and Treasurer, Mary Louise McCarty, Reporter Edna Blain. Our sponsor was Mr. Hampton. The last part of the year we lost Mary Louise McCarty. Then came our Junior year which proved to be a lot of work, but many fond memories were gained from lt. During the year we sold ice cream at school and at ball games we sold popcorn, ice cream and cokes. This year we chose our class rings of which we are very proud. We gave the Seniors a reception on April 29 in the school gymnasium. We chose our class flower, the American Beauty Rose and our class motto, B What You R. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Smith we presented the play Aunt Tillie Goes to Town. Our class officers this year were President, Sheldon Stllllonsg Vice President, Dolores Hamilton, Secretary and Treasurer, Edna Blain, Assistant Treasurer, Carolyn Heemstrag Reporter, Barbara Morris. The year of 1952 rolled around slowly, we thought, until we Seniors started talking about memories when we were Freshmen -- then suddenly it seemed like yesterday when they took place. This year Madelyn Conrad joined us from Jeff, making a total of ten jolly Seniors. This year our officers are: President, Carolyn Heemstra, Vice President, Dolores Hamiltong Secretary, Barbara Morris, Treasurer, Edna Blain, Reporter, Barbara Morris. The first of school we went soliciting for ads to make the publication of this annual possible. We also gave a Chill supper to add to our treasurery so we could go on our trip. After the Chill supper we had a slumber party at Carolyn Heemstra's. On October 18 we had our pictures taken at Smith's Studio in Attica. Mr. and Mrs. Robb entertained us with a Valentine Party at their home in Llnden. We presented the play The Inner Willy directed by Mrs. Jane Packard. 16 On March 29 we left on an eight day eastern tour with the Montmorencl Seniors. We went to Pennsylvania, Washington D. C., and New York City. The most important places of interest were the home and tomb of President Roosevelt, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Empire State Building, West Point Military Academy, The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and really many more too numerous to mention. On April 26 we were honored by the Junior class at a reception in the school gymnasium. Baccalaureate was held on May 4 with Rev. Peter Heemstra giving the address. Commencement was on May 9 with Dr. John Holland of WLS as our speaker. We hope that ourllves may be enriched by many more happy memories. Don't Don't get discouraged when you hear What people say about you, Don't get the blues and drop a tear Because they chance to doubt you. Don't go around with troubled brow, 0'erlooklng all llfe's beauty, The folks that talk will suffer more Than you so do your duty. Don't fret and fume and wish them ill, Their lives hold little pleasure, Send back a message of good wlll 'Twill serve to heap your measure. Don't be discouraged, for the world Will always criticize youg Earth's dearest treasure is the few True friends who love and prize you. -- Unknown 17 Class Will We, the Seniors of nineteen-hundred and fifty-two, being highly intellectual and of sound mind and belng are about to depart from Shadeland High School. Signed, THE SENIOR CLASS OF '52 18 Class Prophecy Last evening I was looking through my memory book and got carried away with my thoughts of the Senior Class of '52. All of a sudden I was startled by me nngmg ox the doorbell. It was a messenger boy with a telegram from the ex'Marle Gee, who was married to a multlmllllonalre She lnvlted my two girlfriends and me to come and vlslt her on their big dude ranch out in Arizona. She has been married for slx years and has a little four year old girl, who is growing up to be quite a cowgirl. Since we had never been on a dude ranch, we dlcided to go to Ayres at Indianapolis to get some new outfits. We thought the people who worked there would know what we should take with us. We walked into the store and decided to look around. While we were looklng around, a tall, slim, beautiful blonde walked up to us with an alr of dignity. She asked us if she could interest us fn the evening gown she was modeling or any that were hanging up. We were about to tell her no when, lo and behold, we discovered that she was none other than Carolm Heemstg who is modeling there at Ayres. She told us that she was engaged to the owner and she had a good sized rock on her finger to prove lt. Cary also told us that June Connelly was working for her fiance as a private secretary. She ls doing very well for herself and ls also engaged to a very handsome boy from Indianapolis who ls ln the Marines. We decided to talk to June. She told us that she was very happy with her work, and her fiance was'expected home very soon. On our way home we decided to stop at the Llght House Inn at Lebanon to get a blt to eat. Whlle we were waiting on our order, who should walk up but ole' Sheldon Stilllons, better known as Skel1y . 'We invited him to sit down and join us ln a bit to eat. He told us that he was married to a former '51' graduate and is the proud father of twin boys, four, and a little girl, two. He now owns the Stllllon's Furniture Store, Inc. where he makes and designs his own furniture. His store ls located on the outskirts of Indianapolis, and he is starting to build one at New York, so it looks as lf Shelly ls doing very well for himself, too. He told us that Q Funkhouser is the President of the Ball State Teachers College. Tom is married to a little English girl whom he met on his annual tour there. ' We reached home that evening about seven o'c1ock. Since we were leaving early the next morning, we had a few things we had to wash out. We turned on the water and to our surprise, we couldn't get It turned off. Everything was getting flooded and we had to do something quick. We tried and tried to get hold of a plumber, but no one would come out at that time of the night. We finally got hold of Williams Plumbing Service. Who should come to flx the running water but Harold Wllllams, who was now owner of the thriving business. After Harold got the water fixed he told us that Madelyn Conrad was now teaching the first and second grades at Shadeland. She now ls married to a high school sweetheart and ls happy teaching school. We took the 8:15 plane to Tucson, Arizona. We boarded the plane and to our surprise the pretty little girl who fastened our safety belts was none other than our own Barbara Morris. She informed us that she was engaged to the pilot, one of the Tippecanoe Co. boys that Barb went with while she was still in hlgh school. She told us that Edna Blain was teaching music 19 at I. U. To our surprise Edna is neither married nor engaged. We hear she has been asked several times, but each time she has turned them down. I guess she hasn't found the right one. After a long and pleasant trip we finally reached Tucson. Marie and her little girl were at the station to meet us. Her husband was keeping the ranch and couldn't get away. Marie told us she had received a letter from Dolores Hamilton, who married a former high school sweet- heart. She is living in Florida and has four little boys. She says she is planning to have one more boy so they can have a basketball team. All of a sudden I awoke from my thoughts and looked at my watch. Here it was almost twelve o'clock and I had been dreaming. Well, it was a pleasant dream, and I know that all of the Seniors will live very happy and prosperous lives. If If you were busy being kind, Before you knew it, you would find You'd soon forget to think 'twas true That someone was unkind to you. If you were busy being glad, And cheering people who are sad, Although your heart might ache a bit, You'd soon forget to notice it. If you were busy being good, And doing just the best you could, You'd not have time to blame some man Who's doing just the best he can. If you were busy being true To what you know you ought to do, You'd be so busy you'd forget The blunders of the folks you've met. If you were busy being right, You'd find yourself too busy quite To criticize your neighbor long, Because he's busy being wrong. --- Rebecca Foresman 20 fi. 4 :ge V,f4- ,F.,.
