I went to the style show and was becoming very interested in a style that had just been modeled. I decided to speak to the person modeling the dress and whom should I be speaking to but Emma Hamilton. She recognized me immediately and wanted me to come to her Home that evening to talk about old time, but I told her I couldn't possibly. I asked her if she had seen any of her classmates and she said she had been keeping up a correspondence with Alice B ers who was married and liv- ing back home in Shadeland. Alice had three lfttle boys and one girl. The little girl was just starting to school at Shadeland. We than discussed the style she was wearing and I bought it. I went back to my hotel room and relaxed for the evening. I finished my buying in New York City Friday and left Saturday morning for Baltimore, Maryland. Upon my arrival in the city, I saw signs and banners advertis- ing the circus that was showing. I hadn't been to a circus since I was a child so I decided to mix pleasure with business and attend the after- noon performance. The main performance of the afternoon was the new el- ephant trainer and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. George Banton. I dldn't recog- nize the names but I certainly did recognize the wife as the former M rna Leavitt. They were superb in their mastery over the elephants. I dIin't Have tfme to make myself known, but I added another classmate to my list. I left Baltimore Tuesday morning and arrived at Richmond, Virginia late that evening. I knew a friend of the opposite sex in the city and decided to let him know I was in town. I called him and he asked me to dinner. We . .. N u. . The orchestra leader and singing star were featured on the door ,fp T ,siir as we went ln. It was Frank Cockrell and his orchestra featuring as their Iiiqf f 5 new singing star, Herschel Qyers. I recognized the names and after the V W' f floor show I went back stage to see them. They said they had been trying I , to get started for some time and were just now getting a break. I asked ' ,f' , them about their friends and they said they knew about only two of their ' w 1.1 classmates and they were Bill Rooze, who had a veterinary practice near 'F19, 'Fir Shadeland and Donald Lau n, who had married a Southern belle and was :jig fb '- bosslng a large plantat on from a rocking chair. ,V i 0 S I left them ana went back to my escort. He took me back to my hotel Q2 ffgf. and I left for Cincinnati, Ohio. When I came to Cincinnati, I was right in Q .ru the midst of the election of mayor. There were posters with the words 3 J pkg 'Vote For Robert L. Black For Mayor.' He was also a Shadeland graduate of gag ,QQPJ '48 and I went to his office to wish him luck. He was already mayor and up Wwe i., for re-election. We had a nice little chat about old times and I left to , y. YA go to my hotel. I bought some new styles in Cincinnati, and decided since .W' I ,N I was so close to Lafayette, I would take a train there for awhile. As I gili Q1 ,g-'35 entered the Wabash Depot, I thought of all the good times of my school Qj,,'?.?, Jipg-1 days and the things we used to do. As I was stepping off the train, I 'T '. stumbled over the porter's foot and fell out of the train and sprained my MW7 ankle. I was taken to the Home Hospital and put in charge of Doctor.W1l- .fggl 'L' lard Burtsfield. Well of course he recognized me and I him. His nurse ffm QEQW4 Inna Turner, whom I also recognized as one of the class of '48, was very FQQK' ff? Happy to see me after so many years. I asked them about the other students ' M f and they said Merle Stlllions was teaching Math at Shadeland. I guess he 3 1 , has to get the assignments weeks ahead of time to keep up with the stud- ' 'lxx ents, They also said Nellie O'Brien was teaching Music at Shadeland. I I ,.,, think she and Merle still have that high school crush. Wg, S After a thorough examination, I was released from the hospital. I 'Q decided to take a bus over ,to Purdue for a look at the campus before I q'. M ,gil left. I was walking around the campus when I looked up and saw coming to- lgvhhs H4y ward me a big dark haired man. He smiled rather shyly and spoke. And, of ily .- MQ. course, it was ,Myer-t,MgQgr,ty. Robert didn't talk much, but he did say lfvffafdw 5125! that Walter Hawkins was a prosperous farmer out near Shadeland. He has one fqig - 'LFQ little Boy in the second grade at Shadeland. I said goodbye to Robert and 23 A ,5, .W went to catch the train back to Milwaukee. When I arrived there, I decid- .U ' ' ed that I not only had brought the store back many new styles, but also 'fgfg many memories for myself of the good times I had while I was attending flggi Shadelandlliigh School. .iv Q55 'ai?mfi, . ,w.,, Qiuvmspr 'V x r , 'M-121.-Zlifvg - 5f:fl4 ?7:?i7W . ,..4, L:., ., ' Uailzzi- Q - -'gg i
