Q-fha Shadlonla Esau Co nteat lf The contestants for the best essay thrs year consisted of members from the enttre senior class After all had written essays on the toprc selected by the county oflice there were three who were considered as entrants for the first place in the local high school These three fmalrsts were Helen Bodensky Dorothy Ann Spangler and Mary Segedy After final touches were added to the essays the one wrrtten by Mary Segedy was selected as the one best suited to represent our school mn the county contest WHAT SOMERSET COUNTY HAS TO OFFER by MARY SEGEDY Snuggled among the Somerset County hrlls rs the little com munrty of New Baltimore At its summit rs a monastery of the Carmelrte order 107 years old at rts foot the brand new Pennsylvania Turnpike It is the old blended wrth the new That rt seems to me symbolrzes Somerset County Thrown open to settlement rn 1764 Somerset County has a hrstory as old as the thirteen colonies themselves At least one of 1ts towns Berltn strll quamt and old fashioned was founded before the Revolutionary War George Washmgton crossed the county many times and Braddocks rll starred expedition passed within its southern boundaries In early days the two rm portant roads Braddocks Trail and the Forbes Road crossed rt linking the East with Pittsburgh The Somerset County settlers joined with those of the counties to the west to give the new federal government xts first internal trouble rn the Whtskey Rebellion Long before the white man came the Indian had been here the Algonquin and the lroquols and at numerous places in th county his cemeterres and villages long for gotten have been drscovered So rt is that Somerset County has much to offer to the hrstorran That ts the old But it rs wrth the new the present that our trtle has to do Today Somerset County has much to contribute to the greatness of our Commonwealth and of our Natron Som erset County rs called the Roof Garden of Pennsylvama That means two things one that nt 15 a garden and two that rt is the top of the state Frosty Sons of Thunder as Somerset Countams have been dubbed since Civil War days point with pride to the fact that not only Mt Davis Pennsylvamas highest pomt but also 10 County One of them is Bald Knob the highest pomt on the Lmcoln Highway east of the Mrssrssrppt Rrver As the highest county in the state Somerset enloys cool comfortable summers and bracing a1r and has become an attractive place for hay fever sufferers Of course the high altitude rn the winter brrngs plenty of snow But this ns an asset too for enterprrsrng winter sports lovers now mamtarn two rmportant winter resorts near Meyers dale-Deer Valley and Meadow Mountarn which are each year becoming more and more famous At these resorts one wrll find all sorts of skr trails and toboggan slides Cold weather too puts a tang in hunting the wild game that abounds rn Somersets mountains Annually thousands of sports men scour the wooded hrllsrdes in search of rabbrts squirrels turkeys and deer Cold weather lrkewlse adds to the fur value of the muskrat racoon mmk and fox whrch Somerset Countarns supply to the national market Fresh mountam streams that tumble down the mountam sides are well stocked with fish Trout and bass are the pnze catches Though hours may pass before a fisherman lands that big one there rs good likelihood that he will land tt for big ones abound Fish hatcherres located at Ogletown and Bakersvrlle help to perpetuate the Joys of Somersets fishing Thawrng snows and cold snaps together produce maple sap And maple syrup has made Somerset County famous Look on the label of the next can of maple syrup you buy the chances are great that rt rs labeled either Somerset County or Vermont since Somerset County stands close to Vermont rn maple syrup production As the snow gives place to the leaves and the flowers xt is easy to understand why the county ts called a garden Take a drrve through any of the rural sections and you will see farmers planting acres and acres of potatoes oats and truck crops When harvest time comes those fields will have yielded enough to put the county second from the top tn the production of potatoes and oats Those same farmers are poultry men and cattle rarsers Each L25 year they market thousands of dollars worth of eggs butter milk chickens and beef Some of them also rarse sheep So xt 15 evtdent that Somerset County offers wonderful opportunities to the farmer and great quantities of farm produce to the consumer One might say that to produce so much from its farms ts enough to make a county xmportant But that rs not all Som erset County draws an even larger part of her income from beneath the surface-from her bituminous coal mines Mrnrng coal rs Somerset Countys most important lndustry Commum tres such as Wmdber Central Cnty, Boswell Hooversvtlle and Holsopple depend for their existence largely on their coal mines All rn all the mines give employment to over 12000 men All rmportant grades of brtumtnous coal are mined Much of rt rs shipped to other parts of the country or the world to be used rn furnaces steamshrps and locomotives Not nearly all the coal tn the county has been mined though operations have been going on rn full force since the turn of the century for years to come Somerset County will continue to furnish coal to the world and work to her own miners Buried resources other than coal-sandstone and limestone and fireclay-are found and mined wrthtn the countys limits Though Somerset County cannot be considered a manufactur mg center there rs some manufacturing carried on The trend ts toward more factories At Meyersdale there rs a shxrt fac tory at Somerset and Meyersdale, cannmg factories where corn and tomatoes especially are canned At least four towns boast rce cream factories and furnrsh the farmer a market for milk and berrres Berlin has a cigar factory Wrndber has honmg Dam Pennsylvamas largest arttfictal body of water provides power to operate the huge steel mrlls rn Johnstown, lust across the county lme Traversmg Somerset County are three main highways the Lrncoln the National and the Pennsylvania Turnpike pre vxously referred to In the southern part the Baltimore and Ohro and the Western Maryland Railroads cross Because of this the county receives many vrsrtors none of whom fail to notice the natural beauty of the countryside If a better view is desired than is obtainable from the road any one of four fire towers can be mounted Lookrng out mto the horizon where earth meets the sky grves one a feeling of man meetxng God Each year vxsrtors are beckoned to thls county by the gentle old finger of mother nature The countys picturesque land scape warts to be reproduced on canvas by the artxsts brush The woods he open to be tnvaded by hot crty feet Lovely flowers and shnrbs awart rn stlent modesty the flattering atten tion of the passer by Birds greet tramprng vacattoners wrth a cascade of songs Streams murmur secrets over the tracks of prehrstorrc animals found on therr bottoms At last Somerset yorns that most colorful parade of the Appalachrans that march of red gold purple and brown from New Hampshire to Alabama which nature stages every autumn Somersets super abundance of mountains and maple trees results rn a more hrghly decoratrve effect than her sister counties of the state can boast of and draws an tncreasmg number of spectators from every part of the Nation These then constitute what Somerset County has to offer a rrch hrstorrcal background a scenic recreation and vacation land productive farms and mines and factories No doubt a visitor would notrce too well paved roads up-to date schools and a high standard of l1v1ng all of which we Who live here have come to take for granted Visitors perhaps see only the surface beauty that cloaks Som erset County There rs a deeper, more subtle beauty whrch only those of us living here can see For in pride and patriotism of our county we see beauty rn our hrstorrcal background mdustrres and our nexghbors friendship .
