FGOTBALL The Warriors were in a transitional period this year, learning a new offen- sive and defensive system. The initial games were rough, but by late season, the Warriors were playing football with class and intensity. The final two games of the season resulted in Warrior victories. These victories broke a 16 game losing streak for the Warriors and estab- lished a winning streak to work on in 1981. M 1 Josh Wells All Conference Football J .ll SEYIVIOUK f'- 0 RIN 3 -ra! The cheerleaders also sponsored a cheerleading clinic this year for interested students in grades 4-8, parents' night for varsity football players, parents' night for varsity boys' and girls' bas- ketball teams, and prepared a taco supper for all basketball players. They also had some money-raising projects to fund these activities. They plan all pep assemblies, make many spirit posters and make the paper poster for football players to run through at home games. The 1980 Seymour War- rior's were led into battle by four senior lettermen, Josh Wells QCRAZY HORSED, Greg Gorden QSTRON G BEAVERJ, Don Beatty CSTRAIGHT ARROWD, and Danny Sales CLATE EAGLEJ. 0 J V CHEERLEADER The J .V. Cheerleaders have had a new beginning this year with Mrs. Barbara Phillips and Mrs. Ruth Thomas providing guidance, counseling, and much enthusi- asm. Members of the squad include Shawna Wiley, Becky Eddy, foo-captainsb Beth Banks and Sherri Lucas. Sherri Barker also cheered at the J .V. The Varsity team's season match record was 1-8. The Junior Varsity team's match record was O-6. Shari Staggs led the Varsity team in serv- ing 42 points, followed by Lisa Banks scoring 37 and Kelli Banks scoring 36. Dian Darrah was the leading server for the Junior Varsity team with a total of 75 points, and was also a great asset to the Varsity team. The team was awarded a second place trophy at the Blakesburg Tournament. With many players returning, a successful season is expected next year. 11.44 u,r N-...av wxik BASEBALL Left to right: Dan Sales, David Mitchell, Josh Wells, Don Beatty, Greg Gordon, Ted Banning, Larry Warren, Rob Schaffner. Within the first two weeks, the number of participants had dropped considerably. By the time the first track meet was held, the Seymour Track squad had only a few participants. The girls that stayed on worked hard and, in some running events, the team placed. Honest efforts reaped rewards for the girls with the determination and follow-through to com- plete the season. Half- time show audiences saw, for the first time, a four member rifle squad in addition to 12 flags and 3 twirlers. Led by field commanders Carla Bennett and Dian Darrah, the Scarlet Brigade won second place in class B at Centerville Pancake Day, first place in class C at Davis County Festi- val of Bands, fwhere they scored higher than 3 class AA bandsj, and first place in class A at the Kirksville N MSU Field Competition. BOY i TRACK The Warrior Track Team was my first year coaching and I felt we all learned a lot during the season. The men pictured, plus Kelly Carel and Dan Sales, competed in seven track meets and did quite well at Bloom- field Relays, We placed second in our class and also at the Wayne Relay we placed second by just one point. ' Seniors Brian J ondle and Kelly Carel Will be missed for the next year, but we have a really good nucleus for a strong and hopefully stronger year. Thanks to great effort and com- munity support, the yearbook sold for three dollars less than any in the con- ference, yet included an elementary section omitted by many. PEPPER In addition to a weekly deadline, accuracy, attention to details, and follow-through, the newspaper staff also had to worry about sentence var- iety, editorializing in news stories, keeping things fair, weekly beats, and digging facts out of reluctant interviewees. It was a challenge well- met some weeks, and learned from others. Overall, the Pepper was a spo- kespiece to be proud of, covering a broader range of stories in more depth than had been attempted before. A RED PEP BAND BLACK PEP BAND 6' H CLUB Row 1: S. Staggs, K. The basic requirement is that a student has maintained a ninety percent average for two semesters, which comprises the scholarship quality. The other three quali- ties include leadership in and out of school, service to the community, and character displayed by the student. New members not pictured were: Seniors - Greg Gordon, Josh Wells. Juniors - Brent Brown, Bruce Davis, Cindy Elliott, Susan Merritt, Chris Sebolt. Sophomores - Tom Reed, Joe Royer, Marsha Banks, Lois Alexander, Sheila Levis. National Honor Society I., 41 WARRIORS The 80-81 basketball record was disappointing, but the effort the boys put into it was not. The season ended with a 6-12 record. Ten of these losses were by ten points or less. Seven of the ten were by six points or less. A rebound here, and a freethrow there, could have made a big difference. Five starting seniors will leave a gap, but if a team spends its time looking back, isomeone will catch and pass it. Senior Ted Banning was named to the Second Team All- Conference. Senior Josh Wells was named Honorable Mention. 'GICSW x. N-ik 3-1 7 FYR 34 44 7 1 fe. 1 Team Blakesburg Russell Wayne Moravia S. While a .500 mark managed to elude this year's edition, an 8-10 season and a fourth place finish in the Bluegrass Conference, has put a glow back into Seymour's campfires. First Team All-Conference forward Shari Staggs averaged 29.6 points per game and finished her Warriorette years with 119.4 career points, and 284 rebounds. Sophomore Terri Staggs scored 288 points and senior Lisa Banks scored 79 points from her play- maker position. Both Terri and Lisa were All-Conference Honora- ble Mention selections. The junior trio of starting guards for the Warriorettes also achieved honorable mention status. Trio members were Marcia Barrett - 130 rebounds, Susan Merritt - 111 rebounds, and Cindy Elliott - 39 steals and 22 blocked shots. A Top reserves for the Warriorettes were Rhonda Johnston - 79 points, Marsha Banks - 23 steals, and Deanna Butler - 9 steals. The offense averaged 56.4 from 1,015 points and the defense allowed 982 points for a 54.6 average. While seniors Lisa Banks, Carole Poole, and Shari Staggs have worn their uniforms for the final time, they will always be a part of our Family. 46 COMPLIMEN TS WATERBED BOUTIQUE GARY and LARRY STAGGS Team Blakesburg Russell Wayne Moravia SEW Morman Trail Melcher-Dallas Central Decatur Lamoni Wayne Moravia SEW Morman Trail Melcher-Dallas Central Decatur Lamoni Moulton-Udell Moravia fSec. Dorine DeVore played Kay Meredith, an attractive, popular student determined to keep her boyfriend away from the new girl. Lisa Banks portrayed her younger sister, Judy Meredith, a young imp fond of spraying boys with perfume. Tiena DeVore played Lois Andrews, an energetic, loyal friend of Kay's, who is sure she'll lose her boyfriend. Jeff Elliott portrayed Steve Woodward, Kay's boyfriend, the director of the band, and a natural leader. Tom Nolan was played by Ted Banning. Becky Johnson played Bessie Trotter, the hard-working housekeeper nearly driven crazy by the chaotic household. She developed a famous blook-curdling yell. Theresa Campbell played Miss Denny, an excitable history teacher who believed strongly in supporting school functions. Jerry Laughlin played G. T. HIGH The Junior High Warriors began the season on a high note. Practice was intense, and with seventeen seventh graders, a lot had to be learned. The team reached its peak right before the first game and defeated Moravia 22-O. It was an excellent game with only four penal- ties and no turnovers. The following week Lamoni fell to the Warriors 8-0 in a good defensive battle. Our next opponent was Corydon. The Warriors played well in the second half, but Corydon out-classed us 60-6. Following the Corydon defeat, the boys couldn't seem to put it back together and lost their two remaining games to Leon and Moravia. With 17 returning seventh graders, next year looks great.
