Once in a while we do get a little serious on the side. -.N UPPER LEFT - Shelley likes to keep in practice for sliding into Third Base, even in the off season. UPPER RIGHT - Pat seems to have delusions of grandeur. Unfortunately, it takes more than this to be a teacher. LOWER LEFT - Even the lst and 2nd Graders know what goes on in the- lunch rooms! LOWER RIGHT - David, Mike, Josh and Don are being their usual selves and cutting up. That seems to be their favorite past time. , fqfjx ,sl.l'. f fy inf! Just looking at the record one would say that we did not have a very successful year, but in reality we had one ofour most successful. We had two players selected on All-Conference teams. They were Mike Jones-first team nose guard and Justin Warren-second team running back. Also Mike Jones was All-State Special Mention by the Des Moines Register. Offensively, the Warriors were lead by Justin Warren and Danny Sales. Justin was responsible for about 500 yards rushing while Danny had close to 400 yards rushing. The quarterback duties were again shared due to injuries. Josh Wells quarterbacked the first two games until a broken arm sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Then sopho- more David Mitchell came in to quarterback the team the remainder of the season. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Mike Jones with 127 tackles, Justin Warren 97 tackles, Mike Murphy 70 tackles, Danny Sales 66 tackles and Kevin Staggs with 61 tackles. 40 .,-.- fm 1 iv Q ,. ,mei X1 4- 'Q J t A A A Q A X F, YQ ,XX X X , J x kg, K U xy' If X 1 , + 9 XX 1. 2 f , 0 , A '1 I X x X 2 M 'f' X, ri , . i - SU' , n X X hr f If - f If X N 2 YJ, Y 'w Xfy 'SV X-f 5: XJ A -tax: L X, , 'NX ,fX x 2 gi 1 NX be X., ,,EXX, , , XX ' z X iff fx 1,Y3,ViS,iXi? my , Lg , pygsffm- , , I W7 X ,, vff x X X 1 X1 XX, f A DL an s U ff, y '- 4 1, f ,W 1 W I' 0 f -.WI 1 f, 'fa 4 4 2-Wsbofr SX ff' 1, ' f rw, M Q, , 'wxZ Zh hf,f7 'Q f , , 'f' vw 1' ff X X ff ,f Q 1 ' v ' 5 Z X ry y -'gig J , X ' k i f 1 .f. r ,W , 4, ff 7v f , f Q1 ,Y 4x 'xg XX Z , f 7 4..- ,XX in , ...A XX XQXX X X fain, ,Xqsfczi zi ff ,x :Y X WXXX- ,s - ilk V 3' -X-,XXX Xwsgyq- . This year the Cheerleaders have worked hard to spread the tradi- tional spirit of enthusiasm throughout all of the games. After a car wash to raise money, Susan, Kim, Darla, Dorine, and Michelle were able to attend 1000 Hills Camp where they learned new cheers and chants. 43 The boy's trackteam of 1979 again vvas one that placed consistantly high throughout the season. The team placed 4th at both the Conference Indoor and Outdoor, 3rd at the Lion Invitational and Moravia Invitational, and 8th out of22 teams, at District Competition by scoring 17 points. We became dangerous throughout the line up instead of just two of three spots. On defense, we had lackluster and brilliant games. We grew more consistent. The third, and maybe the most important area of growth was confidence. We were more confident of not only our individual abilities, but also our team abilities to get the job done. The addition of twelve new flags, and the change to corps-style marching made this year a successful one for the Brigade, as it vvon its class at the annual Pancake Day parade in Centerville, and its class at Northeast Missouri State University's homecoming, winning over fourteen other bands. The Brigade also made appearances at home football games, the Homecoming Parade, the annual Band Night, and the Bloomfield Festival of Bands, where it marched in the parade and played the National Anthem before the evening's festivities. The 1979-80 Scarlet Brigade has worked hard and held several fund-raising activities to sponsor their trip this summer. Congratulations are due Mr. Juhl and all of the members of the Scarlet Brigade. Five seniors, five MOYFHON Trail - - - Melcher-Dallas juniors, and two sophomores made up the varsity squad for most of the year. TJ SEYMO R WARRIORETTES While their 3 and 14 record was not all the Warriortette followers had hoped for, the 79-80 edition of the SHS six provided some worthy moments. Senior Shelley Pearson wrapped up a career that saw her score in double figures 47 of 51 varsity career games. Shelley amassed 1118 points for a career 21.9 average. This season Shelley averaged a team high 27.5, good enough to let her earn all-conference 1st team honors. Shelley was ably complemented by Shari and Terri Staggs, Carole Poole, and Dian Darrah in the forward court. Shari Staggs was tops on the offensive boards, averaging 5.1 rebounds per game along with her 19.1 points per game. She also led the teams in assists, dealing out 4.1 per game. Terri Staggs, coming in as a replacement for the injured Carole Poole, gave a respectable showing as a freshman, averaging 5.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. The guard court was very young, but they were very strong and promise to get stronger. Marcia Barrett, Cindy Elliott, and Sue Merritt carried the brunt of the attack, with super assistance from Lisa Banks, Marcia Banks, Carla Bennett and Polly Sager. Barrett led the team in rebounds, averaging 8.8 per game. Elliott led in steals, with 20, and blocked shots with 10. Losing a key player like Pearson is always tough, but with returning talent, many of whom will be sophomores or juniors next year, Coach Doggett can look forward to many happier days ahead. 60 TEAM Russell Blakesburg Moravia SEW Mormon Trail Melcher4Dallas Central Decatur Lamoni Wayne Moravia SEW Mormon Trail Melcher-Dallas Melcher-Dallas Central Decatur Lamoni Wayne Moravia WE THEY 33 63 61 54 51 74 56 95 71 65 39 56 63 69 54 84 63 77 49 52 50 65 53 59 58 76 32 55 62 72 64 68 54 50 48 55 fCon. Dave Alexander SENIOR PLAY The Cameron family is all of a ditherg Steve, their son, has just come home, after two years in the navy service. He has not returned, however, to the calm, quiet atmosphere he had so often dreamed of. Instead, he finds himself at a loss to know how to handle his family who are too solicitous and domineering in trying to assist him in adjusting to civilian life. Steve's most perplexing and immediate problem is when he discovers that his mother and Clara, the girl he left behind and the daughter of his mother's bosom friend, have made all arrangements for their immediate marriage. In order to extricate himself from this situation, he decides to pretend that he has a serious illness and that he has spells which occur without advance warning. The truth of the matter is that Steve during his absence has fallen in love with Lt. Shirley Anderson, a navy nurse. Steve suggests that they get his former nurse to come to his home as she would be the only one who, understands how to take care of him . . . said nurse being Shirley Anderson. Clara consents to this arrangement only on the condition that the nurse be permitted to stay just long enough to teach Clara how to take care of Steve herself. However, from the minute that Shirley steps into the home, it becomes a free-for-all between the two girls as Clara in no uncertain words lets them know she is suspicious of the whole thing. 77 v T. ,fn f ,,X'?vi W ! . -It num 'f wwgsfif' . . ,, v iyvlgfbll W: ,,V, X-'. -,.f W I . K L S A THE WARRIORS ARE Rauma ro s 4 N... A VICTORY .Xt L. X The 1979 Seymour Homecoming was different from those of previous years in several respects. This year a Homecoming King, as well as Homecoming Queen was crowned. The coronation of the King and Queen was held during Thursday's Stunt Night festivities, instead of at halftime of the football game. Linda Dotts and Justin Warren were chosen as Homecoming Royalty for 1979-1980 by a vote of the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. The traditional Homecoming Parade was held, with the Junior Class winning Best Overall Float, and the Senior Class receiving the award for the best high school float. The Warrior football team, however, was beaten by the Melcher-Dallas Saints in the Homecoming Game. After the game, a Homecoming Dance was held, with the Poor Man Toe Band providing the live music. RQYAL COURT Left to right: David Mclflvain, Teresa Mclvlurry, Patrick Eddy, Susan Kruzich, King Justin Warren, Queen Linda Dotts, Jan Smaniotto, Kelly Carel, Karla Banks, Steve Allen 79 The Homecoming Game, the last act of the big day, was bet- ter than the final score, 48-0 indicated. Justin Warren, above right, was a bright spot during the first half, but was injured the second half and was unable to finish the game. Run- ning out of the shotgun forma- tion, quarterback David Mitchell, above right, had early success throwing to Mark Royer, Danny Sales, and Don Beatty. The defense played well, only allowing momentary lapses which were the breaks Melcher Dallas needed to turn the tide. The Scarlet Brigade started the half-time entertainment. Then the King and Queen of Home- coming were introduced to the crowd. At left are Justin Warren and Linda Dotts, this yearls Royalty. During the second half of the game, the action was as rugged as ever. The Warriors refused to be beaten, even though they were definitely behind on the scoreboard. Below left, Mit- chell gets away a pass in the face of fierce pressure. At right, that pile on top of the MD car- rier is Mike Jones and Mike Murphy, as Kevin Staggs closes into help. 82 The Homecoming Parade was a success, even though the wind tried very hard to blow the floats away. The Junior Class, with their eager stork UEXPECTING A VICTORY won the overall competition. The Senior's BLOW THEM UNDER was a whale of an idea, and earned them First place in the High School Competition. The Sophomore's entry SHAKE 'EM UP got sucked up by the quality competition, while the Freshmen's SKIN THE SAINTS went down to valiant defeat. The Fifth and Sixth grades took First in the Elemetnary division with their marching group THE SAINTS GO MARCHlN'IN - BUT THEY GO DRAGGIN' OUT. The Scarlet Brigade added their usual fine music, and the horses brought up the rear. On to the game! HOIVIECOMIN G PARADE JR. R. PRD The highlight of every Spring is the Junior-Senior Ban- quet and Prom, held by the Junior Class for the graduat- ing Seniors and the faculty of Seymour High School. This past spring's Prom proved to be no exception. The theme, TIME PASSAGES, taken from a popular Al Ste- wart song, set the mood for the activities of the evening. The meal for the Banquet was prepared by the mothers of the members of the Junior Class, and was served by selected members of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes. Retiring faculty members Ermil Banning and Maurice Stamps gave speeches and Brian Jones served as the eveningis toastmaster. The Junior Class members selected as Queen, Tina Leopard, and King, Joel Wells. The gymnasium was stunning, done in an array of pastel colors. Music for the dance following the meal was pro- vided by Loose Change. Prom time is an exciting and memorable one for all of those involved and the Prom presented by the Class of 1980 will certainly be remembered. Waiters and Waitresses: Danny Sales, Dorine DeVore, Ted Banning, Jan Dotts, Josh Wells, Kim Glenn, Don Beatty, Shari Staggs, Darla f ff , , J 'Q mf sw' 1979 Prom Royalty: Queen Tina Leopard and King Darrah, Greg Gordon, Marcia Barrett, Mark Royer, Carla Bennett, Joel Wells Chris Sebolt, Cherie Davis, and David Mitchell. 4Q',.., The band for this year's Homecoming Dance, The Poor Man Toe Band, provided a lot of good hard rock music to dance to. Students and alums both were well pleased by their performance. The dancers enjoyed themselves immensely, while exercising due care not to trip over the control wires, and injure themselves, as well as short- circuit the whole band. Most everyone took a turn on the dance floor, and there were even some people there who were either very tired, or too old to appreciate rock. They actually touched while dancing! Not everyone danced all night. Some sat and rested, some walked around scouting the potential, and others walked away from those who were walking around. All in all, it was a very suc- cessful dance. X53 BANQUET TIME PASSAGES was appropriate for the ban- quet as well as the dance. With all the wonderful food being served, absolutely no one was in any hurry to finish. Most of the Seniors ate as though this might be their last meal. Actually, some thought it might be their first good meal at school, but that was said purely in jest. And best of all, someone else did all the carrying and cleaning up afterwards. Thank heaven for mothers and Sophomores. f x --, -. .... .A A, Q Following the traditional procession around the school, the Seniors made their grand entrance into the gymna- sium, where a sumptuous meal had been prepared by the mothers of the Junior Class. The meal consisted of tur- key with dressing, baked potato, green beans, and salad. Home-made rolls were to be had in abundance, and the dessert was a very special apple crisp. Everyone who attended went away well satisfied, even some of the coaches who ate not just once, but several times. 85 ADVERTISING SEYMOUR PROMISE CITY CENTERVILLE CORYDON PLANO SEWALL TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED OUR MOST SINCERE THANKS X Then came the final TIME PASSAGES for many of the outgoing Seniors, the Junior-Senior Prom Dance. Music was provided by LOOSE CHANGE, a band that provided good dancing music for everyone. As usual, some of the faculty thought that the music was just a bit too loud, but no one could hear them for two or three days afterwards. The wishing well was much appreciated, and it is hoped that every one who made a wish that night will have it come true, as part oftheir TIME PASSAGES.
