There is no finer gift that life can give to the true teacher than the satisfaction of looking back over a long and successful teaching career. That reward is Gertrude Benson's. When she came to Central High School to teach, in l926, Miss Benson was returning to her alma mater. Educated at the University of Michigan, with advanced work at the University of Chicago and Michigan State University, Miss Benson forsook her major subject, biology, for mathematics, and students trained in her classes have responded to her excellent teaching tech- niques. Aiming toward perfection and with meticulous at- tention to detail, Miss Benson has guided with smoothly functioning efficiency various clubs, graduating classes, and the National Honor Society during her thirty-six year career. Beneath her gaiety of spirit and delightful sense of humor, with which she has attracted a host of friends of all ages, lie a deep interest in and con- cern about the character and career of many a stu- dent, even after he has left her class or homeroom. More than one college student has found a crisis in his education suddenly eased by a check bearing a familiar signature. An excellent cook and a charming hostess, Miss Benson has shared with her friends, not only her at- tractive home on Cleo Street, but also a quaint little summer cottage tucked amid white birch and pine at Diamond Lake. Her friends travel with her, by way of her colored slides, to Europe... South America... Hawaii . . . or just to East Lansing, where her artistry with a camera and her love for flowers have captured the glories of the gardens at Michigan State University. Asked what she plans for retirement years, she bubbles over with a quick answer and a twinkle in her eye: l have a former student in Alaska that I want to visit . . . And I haven't yet made a trip clear 'round the world - The Class of '63 responds with a Bon Voyage, Miss Benson! as we affectionately dedicate to you this l963 Oracle.
