6 CHRISTIAN ll. ROOSENRAAD Principal of I. W. Sexton High School Perhaps there are reminiscent thoughts behind the smiles of Principal Roosenraad as he pauses a moment at the beginning of another busy day to chat a moment with the Oraclcfs photographer. Mr. Roosenraad may well be recalling that eventful Febru- ary 1, back in 1943. On that date, the doors of Sexton High School swung open for the first day of school in the new building. There had been no time for any landscap- ing of the grounds. VVooden planks still spanned the muddy spots, and mounds of earth from the excavating were still in evidence. Not only Mr. Roosenraad. but many of the men faculty members were physically tired from helping to make the transfer from Old Centralf, XVith labor scarce. it was they who installed the lockers, which have since been replaced by handsome new ones. Principal Charles E. LeFurge, whom many alumni remember from their days in Central High School, lived only a few weeks after the opening of the new build- ing. so that almost from the beginning of our life here at Sexton. Nlr. Roosenraad has been our principal. These ten years from 1943 to 1953 under his principalship have been eventful ones at Sexton High School. The auditorium has been completed, the football stadium and the new track have been built. Plans for a swimming pool are definitely on the agenda for the very near future. A great deal of new equipment for classroom and laboratory use has been purchased. Sex- tonis library has grown from 2386 volumes to 5419 volumes. Trophy cases in the foyer and along the corridors have filled with tokens of honors won in music, speech, and athletics. The growing list of scholarships awarded to Sexton seniors at graduation time attests the academic achievement of our students at the colleges and universities of Michigan and other states. The school enrollment has increased from 1263 to 1472 and with a curriculum ex- panding to include new courses such as driver education, cooperative training, and special facilities in counseling, plus the in- creased number of classes in all depart- ments, Sextons faculty has grown from -18 to 60.
