Svc Our New Alma Mater In this modern age when the enigmas of our universe are being revealed through great scientific achievements, education is of great essence. Having a school equipped with modern facilities, such as ours, offers great opportuni- ties of which we should all take advantage. The following are some of these facilities: this year we are exceedingly fortunate in having fully equipped phys- ics and chemistry laboratories, complete with a closed-circuit television. Every student should appreciate this whether they take these advanced sciences or not. This year's biology laboratory has been improved and a new earth science course has been added to the curriculum. Included among our new facilities is the language laboratory. Never before has Sewickley High School been able to offer its students a more profitable piece of equipment. The high school office has been equipped with an intercom system which enables our principal to relay impor- tant messages to the teachers and to the students. The library this year is supplied with everything from Abandoned Mine Mystery by Norwin Pallas to Zoo Expedition by William Bridges. The new Home Economics Department has many comforts of home-a sofa, stereo hi-fi, and wall-to-wall carpet- ing. This year the home economic students have new courses, such as ceramics, Swedish embroidering, flower ar- ranging, and interior decorating. The Homemaking Course is open to boys as well as to girls. e been installed, such as a twenty-inch drill press, an eight-inch shaper, a vertical milling plane, and a half-ton hoist. The shop offers an elementary course in electricity and home mechanics for girls, also. As to the musical aspects of the school, a large, new band room and the acoustics give the band members a relaxed surrounding while practicing music. The choral room, where the different choruses meet, also doubles as a T.V. room. Students that have chorus for one period every day will be given ahalf credit. The dictaphones and the new electric typewriters in the Commercial Department help prepare commercial stu- dents more fully for their respective business careers. W Kilns have been installed in the Art Department to aid the students in the making of ceramics. Let us now look at the non-educational aspects of our school: the lobby with the hanging staircase, the flagstone floor, and the abstract chandelier, is certainly an attractive asset to our new school. The auditorium having paneled walls, carpeting, and cushioned seats adds a touch of luxury to our assemblies. The spacious cafeteria with its bright-colored glass provides a pleasant atmosphere while we are eating. The landscaped courtyard is a recreational area where our students may spend their leisure time. Being situated in such a beautiful countryside is another credit to the New Sewickley. We should appreciate this pleasant environment. A Our students have always been proud of their school whether old or new, but this year they should be and are prouder than ever before. They have every educational advantage at their fingertipsg to make good use of these advantages though, depends upon the student himself. They should also have a personal pride in the beauty of the school. Added together, these factors result in the New Sewickley Area High School. The Sophomores now took part in Senior high chorus, dances, and various assemblies. This was their first year to attend pep meetings, where their energetic cheerleaders and majorettes led them in cheers and songs. There was also the excitement of ordering their school rings, which every student anticipates. Class officers were elected as follows: for president, Dennis Gyory, for vice-president, Martin Podbesek, for secretary- treasurer, Mary Lou Montini, and for student council repre- sentatives, Shirley Lloyd, Kathleen Fraicola, and Stephen Baczkowski. With their Sophomore year quickly fading and becoming only a memory, they are now looking forward with much anticipation to their Junior year at Sewickley. Left to right: Row 1: E. Minous, P. They were now called Freshman, a title long awaited. It did not take long for this energetic group to recognize and assume their responsibilities. Eager to carry out their new duties, they were active in assemblies, sports, junior high chorus, and junior high student council. Since they enjoyed social affairs, they looked forward to the Freshman Dance. As a class, they were well-liked for their good sportsmanship and enthusiasm. The success of Freshman activities rested largely on the officers elected by their class: they were as follows: presi- dent, Thomas Reiger, vice-president, Lloyd Spitznogle, secre- tary-treasurer, Rebecca Zumbro, and student council repre- sentatives Suzanne Pittavino, Terry Cochran, and Christine Grabowski. The Freshmen were the experienced leaders of Junior High. Next school term opens more doors to them, for then they will enter Senior High. M. Olbrish, M. Massaglia, P. Britt, G Marks D. Montccupo, D. As eighth graders they learned to co-operate with their teachers and classmates, and gained experience in dealing with problems of the years ahead. They participated actively in Junior High assemblies, sports, band, and social events. Although their activities were limited, they took part in them eagerly. Their choice of officers Was: Dennis Blank for president, Jacque Perkins for vice-president, Vivian Chopp for secretary- treasurer, and Patty Beistel, Cyrilla Slehodnik, and Antoinette Slebodnik for student council representatives. We hope the eighth grade of 1965-66 will try to uphold, and if possible, make better, the ideals and traditions handed down to them by classes of previous years. man, D. Pavlik, C. Vinsick, A. With the help of their teachers they did many challenging lessons and took many subjects in the curriculum offered them. The students they chose for their officers were: for president, Thea Cheselske, for vice-president, Louis Korpar, for secretary-treasurer, Elaine Raffaelli, for student council representatives, Helen Fraicola, Norma Wilson, and Jarett Yuknalis. To show their enthusiasm and interest in extracurricular activities, many of the students took part in the junior high chorus, band, student government, their assembly and many of the boys participated in football and basketball. This year's seventh grade students show much promise and soon they will be leaders rather than followers. strom, R. Marasco M. Stares, C. Stitley Leasure, H. Neatby Left to right: Row I: C. L. DALLA BETTA Supervising Principal High School Principal Graduates of 1966: You have the unique distinction of being the last class to bear the educational banner of Sewickley Area High School. Carry it proudly and with honor. Each of you must realize that our progress is measured in terms of the leadership and contributions of Sewickley graduates from 1923 to 1965. You have inherited from them a challenging legacy. Facts prove that they have ap- plied their education, experience and character to the betterment of mankind. Will you, as a 1966 graduate, use your education to raise present standards? The name Sewickley Area High School will become history, but the spirit and initiative of our graduates will continue to be a living influence in the life of the com- munity and the nation. H. W. HOPKINSON Junior High Principal FAREWELL The school year 1965-66 is one that will long be re- membered for its trials and tribulations, its exciting days of moving, and finally the enjoyment of a new school building. The many trying days of locating books, dodg- ing workers, and waiting for certain facilities to be com- pleted were eventually overshadowed by the many good ones that were made possible with the completion of the building. The coming years will likewise require some adjust- ments in our thinking and a cooperative spirit as We proceed through our first major reorganization in many years. As time has a way of marching on without asking, We, too, must continue our work to educate and prepare young people for the many tasks that lie ahead. We plan to meet this new challenge with an open mind and a willingness to contribute all that may be helpful and good for the cause of continuing a good educational program. This school year is drawing swiftly to a close, and as it does, we bid a sad farewell to our beloved 'Sewickley' and prepare to welcome 4Yough, as our new name. In the years to come, 1 am sure we will develop the same pride and spirit in this new district as we have enjoyed in the past. T L. With the money which remained after the publish- ing of the yearbook, the staff decided to award two one- hundred-fifty dollar scholarships to two worthy Seniors who planned on furthering their education. Qualification for these scholarships is based upon the student's scholastic achievement, maintenance of an overall B average or better, professional and technical promise, financial need and char- acter. The Senior High faculty, with the aid of Mr. Dalla Betta and Mr. Gradisek, select the winners. Last year's winners were Janet Dabin and Irma Bilak. They are now attending California State College. GOOD Our Tribute To A Real Administrator: As the last class to graduate from Sewickley Area High School, we pay tribute to you, Mr. H. W. Good, our Supervising Principal. During twelve years, we have been honored and privileged to reap the benefits of your high standards of education. We regard you as a ubornn administrator and educator who always placed first our interests and bet- terment as students. You practiced a workable philosophy of applying wisdom and common sense in decisions which had to be made. We admire you as a genuine leader who proved that no untiring effort or any amount of time was too great a sacrifice to assure the best for us in schools, facilities, and curriculum. We respect your exemplary manliness which considered each of us as an individual person- ality with potentials to be developed. Your firm yet courteous discipline was always tempered with patience, human kindness and understanding. We cherish you as a friend on whom we can always de- pend. These fine qualities which you have always displayed have made a lasting impression upon us and will challenge us to give our best in the future for our Alma Mater and all those who have helped us and had faith and confidence in us. The records show that after teaching five years in Franklin Township High School, you came to Sewick- ley Township and served as High School Principal from June 1936 to June 1946. The same year you left to accept the position as Supervising Principal of Penn Township Schools. Because you had proven so competent and had done such a commendable job as High School Principal for ten years, in January 1947, the Sewickley Township Board of Education recalled you to become Supervising Prin- cipal of Sewickley Township Schools to succeed Mr. G. C. Gressinan who had been made an Assistant Superintendent of Westmoreland County Schools. In 1957 you headed the Sewickley Area ,lointure which took in Madison and Arona. Your thirty years of service in our district which included the building of two elementary schools and our high school and numerous other educational accomplish- ments, stand as a testimony to your desire for progress and reflect your personal dedication to the job so well done. We salute you! We thank you! We wish you continued success and happiness which you so deserve and merit, as you assume your educational role as Assistant Superintendent of the Yough School District. These gentlemen belong to the country's fastest growing profession. The number of CPAs has approximately tripled during the past fifteen years. A recent study, involving experts in a number of social sciences, found good reasons for continued rapid growth of the accounting profession in the foreseeable future: REASON 1951: 50,000 new businesses every year and booming foreign markets assure a sharply competitive economy. ln order to compete, businesses will need more cost controls and other studies of per- formance, and more expert help from CPAs in looking ahead Cbudgets, return-on-investment analysis, mathematical techniques for determining probable results of alternative courses of actionl. REASON 32: More government regulation requires more sophisticated accounting data, and more inde- pendent professional men who can take some responsibility for its reliability. REASON 33: Businesses will report their financial condition to more investors, creditors, and others. ln addition, businesses increasingly will explain to a broader public that what they do is good for society. These explanations will depend a lot on accounting data.
