All through junior and senior high school we have been anticipating with much jubi- lation this year. A busy year with responsibilities for the annual, reflector, and senior play, it has more than tulfilled our expectation. Reminiscing with some sadness our past years at Sewickley, we first remember our junior high days and the treshman dance, our first adult affair. As soph- mores we entered a new phase. senior high, and tackled the new courses and activities with determination. Our junior year and the prom, which then seemed to be the crowning achievement of our lives. came next, but now as graduation draws near our class looks forward to a new and completely difterent life for which we have been preparing these past years at Sewickley High. Mary Ann Zachetti Judy Leasure Ursula Serro As we the class of 1960 entered our junior year, we looked forward to a year of many new and interesting activities. The junior girls sold candy in the halls at noon and served refreshments at the football games. In late October we received one of our most treasured possessions, our class rings. Every- one was pleased and proud to wear them. Our class made its mark scholastically and athletically. We were represented on the honor roll and several of our boys played varsity in both football and basketball. Our two class dances, the Christmas Dance and the Prom, were successful and very beautifully decorated. As we leave our junior year we hold many memories that will be with us forever. We hope we can assume the responsibility of be- ing seniors. Top Row: T. Fisher, N. Milton, G. Topinka, R. Grdijan, R. Moore, T. Grushecky, C. Natale. Bottom Row: M. Constanza, E. Klus, R. Kuszai. G. At first every- thing seemed to be very confusing, but with the patience and help of the faculty and up- perclassmen, we soon became accustomed to our new school life and settled down to work. Though shy for awhile, it was not long un- til our voices were heard on the football field, in assembly, and in the halls and class- rooms. Much latent ability quickly came to life among us in social, athletic, musical, and scholastic fields. We recognize the importance of the work ahead of us and with a spirit of win or die, we shall forge ahead to prepare ourselves for the future years of our education and of our lives. 42 Top Row: S. Richard Critchfield, Secretary, Mary Catherine Stader, Student Council, Louise Mitchell, Bonnie Sochacki, John John- son. Taking all into consideration, we eighth graders had much fun. work, excitement, and the other things that go with high school and growing up. M ary Prejza Linda Shink Louis Kleid Thrilled with the idea of entering the Junior High, one hundred and forty-eight seventh graders were enrolled on September 2, 1958. The seventh graders found that they had a very full schedule, with junior high curricu- lum. Besides the academic subjects, they took gym, art, music, home economics, and in- dustrial arts. Many of our seventh grade class have par- ticipated in the band, chorus, junior high football, basketball, and cheerleaders. Our cheerleaders are Maxine Vozel and Joyce Vozel. We have also participated in as- semblies and pep meetings. We are proud of being a part of Sewickley Area Joint High School, and we like to take part in assemblies. As we face the coming years, we will try to do our best, and to co- operate fully with our teachers and our class- mates. 46 Top Row: J. Keenan, R. Ricci, T. Tainton, J. Freeman, J. Peters, D. Varsity gooiball The varsity football consists of boys who have proven, through their diligent, hard work, their fine ability to perform on the gridiron, their sportsman-like conduct and their intense desire to win, that they are capable of displaying the brand of football for which Sewickley Area's teams are noted. This is an accomplishment of which they can be proud as it took them many, long, ar- duous hours of practice. Through the competent assistance and leadership of their coaching staff, Mr. Bru- no, Mr. Slosky, and Mr. Rodebaugh, these boys gained more football knowledge and ability and an important sense of co-opera- tion. As in previous years they were well-re- warded for their efforts with a fine record and a highly succesful season. Varsity Basheffiall Our 1958-59 Sewickley Area Basketball Team, coached by Mr. Hopkin- son, had the potentials of having a promising season. The teams experience, height, and ability are the necessities of a good team. The seniors are: John Radencic, William Spoonhoward, Robert Critch- field, Walter Slgllt, Ernest Anzur, John Zakutney, and Dennis Tepke. All of these seniors had lettered at least once in previous years. The juniors, Richard Grdijan Edward Poland, and Noble Milton and sophomore, August Popella also saw considerable action. The season's opening games found the Bisons bowing to its competi- tors, but improved as the season progressed. This group of boys repre- sented our school by excelling in sportsmanship if not in victory. 57 U14 M lx R A 14414. qv I B 1 . y V! an x X. i by 5 1 X x -2 -,ff ' Back Row: R. Spoon howard, T. Fundamentals will be stressed throughout the season. The pur- pose of a J.V. squad is to prepare Varsity prospects for the season ahead: therefore the Won and Lost Records will not be the ultimate goal. There are several boys who possess the natural ability to become var- sity material in future years. Only the com- ing seasons will prove their value to Sewick- ley's basketball fortunes. The little Bisons started the season with a completely new team, as there were no holdovers from the previous year. The main purpose behind this team is to provide the boys with a fundamental back- ground in basketball. By doing this when they reach senior high they will be able to take their places on the varsity and provide Se- wickley with another representative team. Junior high basketball also develops a sense of competition among the boys. unior Higti Basketball Top Row: W. Aujay, J. Perlick. Middle Row: V. Dalla Betta, R. Vozel, P. Holomshek, C. Zag- ar, VV. The staff has worked diligently to prepare the materials necessary for the production of a yearbook. Photography, layouts, and written matter were planned and carried out efficiently in order to meet the ever ap- proaching deadlines. The members hope the new ideas that were incorporated will meet with student approval. The staff hopes as you read through this annual that you will remember the class of 59 and the students who have put forth their efforts to make this yearbook a success. .fs 3 ..-f- f-- 'i .---v ,,,,. The staff, headed by Ar- lene Rosensteel, has accomplished this aim by selling advertising space in the annual, taking subscriptions, and sponsoring movies. It is not an easy task to finance a year- book such as this. It requires time, patience, co-operation, and hard work. We can truthfully say that each member of the business staff has done his share to lessen the financial burden of this yearbook. We know this work was not done in vain. This active club was organized at the re- quest of English students for the purpose of expressing original creative writing. The club gives encouragement to those who like to write and it provides them with a means of presenting their manuscripts to others. The meetings of this organization are held bi-monthly under the supervision of Miss Mitchell. These meetings are made more en- joyable by guest speakers, who are interested in literature and writing, and contests for the best original pieces of work. The club members have chosen these of- ficers: President, Cynthia Menozzig Vice- President, Olive Joy Villottig Treasurer, Le- roy Bussardg Assistant Secretary, Karen Sle- ber: Secretary, Patricia Uranag Student Council Representative, Patricia Kopcakg Re- porter, Karl Kuszaj. Senior High Student Council The Student Council of Sewickley Area High School is composed of elected members from the classes and the various clubs. The Student Council meets twice a month under the direction of Mr. J. Andreo, the advisor. The Constitution was revised this year so that this organization may more effectively meet the requirements of the students and the school. This group gives the students a view of government in an institution and therefore students are better prepared to take part in community government. Twice a year the group has a G.A.A. fun night. The G.A.A. also helps in presenting the an- nual gym exhibition. The officers of 1958-59 are: President, Anna Mary Martzg Vice-President, Barbara Zimmersg Secretary-Treasurer, Judy Lea- sureg Student Council, Olive Joy Vilotti. The Leaders' Club is a newly organizec. group of girls. It consists of thirty members, fifteen juniors and fifteen seniors. This club, which meets every Wednesday after school, is under the capable direction of Mrs. Herbert. Some of the activities that the girls participate in are volley ball, basketball, square dancing, and relays, but the main pur- pose of this group is to develop good sports- nianship.
