Each generation must expand the scope of knowledge inherited from the preced- ing generation. We would still be living on the same level as the ancient people if our ancestors had not increased their knowledge with each generation. Schools should lead in the progress of civilization. The field of training and knowl- edge must be broadened to include new ideas and to improve the old ones. Gur civilization will progress Just as fast and as far as our education leads. Seniors are the epitome of six years of edu- cation in high school. They reflect mental and social maturity. They possess open-mindedness, but firm convictions for the moral right. They are sin- cere about the democratic way of life. They learn wholesome concepts of good school citizenship and become good commun- ity citizens. They remember that for every- thing tnere is a reason and conduct them- selves accordingly. Our cordial and sincere good wishes for your futures after graduation and Gods blessings on you. ll mm.-W... is , Sf' V in ,I cl li y ri 1 VJhen you enumerate the essentials of a successful school program, you find there is nothing more important than the faculty. They unselfishly pour out front their abundant storehouses of knowledge the wisdom which molds our future. Being a teacher is a great responsibility, for they must live lives which set an example to their students. They must have patience to cope with our conduct. As seniors, we have come to know our teachers as friends. When we have problems we look to tnem for help and guidance. We are proud of our faculty here at Sewickley and would like you to know them also. Travel with us down the hallowed halls and meet them individually. Qur first stop is room one, the home economics kitchen where we find Miss Mary Paul. She prepares the home-makers of tomorrow. Pleasant aromas drift from beneath her door which make your mouth water. She is always pleasant and ready to help. As we enter roonz two, we get L1 cheery smile from Mrs. Alta McGrew. She teaches junior high home economics. lt is in her classes that our girls learn the basic fundamentals of home making. The next room, number three, has a friend- ly atmosphere because it is the library, filled with books, and books are our friends. There to help you make wise selections is our tiny sweet librarian, Mrs. lane Rainey. For quite a few years, room four has been home to Mr. Willicirn Fullerton. Mr. Fullerton teaches history and commercial law classes, which make for better citizens of tomorrow. He LS one of our assistant coaches. Across the hall in room five we find Mr. Victor Vassia, who teaches ancient history. He coaches the little Bisons in both football and basketball. l-le enjoys spending his leisure time hunting and fishing with his daughter, Vicky. vig, ,UUIDHQIL .IL ti .-Q., nor' f-'t -x 'U'- TY Q33 471' '-1 se-X rulfy, C. Moore, A. Lawson, V. Vassia C. Pritts, R. Fulton, R, Rodebauqh jauqht, un, fhaf. pfuhczplea, All of our secretaries and business students find themselves at some time in room five. Here, Mr. Steven Gyory teaches them the tech- niques of commercial operations. He has the responsibility of being treasurer of the student funds. The next door we corne to is the one lead- ing to Mr. Miller's office. Although we fre- quently found ourselves there, we will not take time for a visit today. ln room seven we learned about our own state. lt is the home room of Mr. loseph Andreo. Mr. Andrea teaches Pennsylvania History, civics, and economics. He is also an assistant coach of the Bisons. Early to bed, early to rise, is the secret of success of Miss Harriet Hayden who presides over room eight. She skillfully teaches typing and shorthand and helps situate girls in sec- retarial jobs for which they are suited. Room nine is a fascinating one to the lovers of science. ln this rooni, Mr. loseph Shott teaches classes in general science and biology. Mr. Shott is responsible for our paper, The Reflector , and is advisor to the journalistic club. We aren't always as likely to find Mr. George Boogs in room Ccontinued on next pagel A. Andreo, F, Yoniclc, L, Dalla Betta UZ, JforuzA.tq,, ofoqalfg, and Jfonofz, Him, Fanamounl, finished out by Mr. Charles Moore who was recently graduated from Saint Vincent's. He assumed the junior class responsibility and preparation of the Christmas Dance and junior- Senior Prom. That finishes the main floor. Come along up the steps and we'll visit Mr. Robert McCune in room thirteen. Mr. McCune teaches junior high school subjects and is the advisor to both the junior and senior high student council. This is the first year room fourteen has been used for high school students. Mr. Alex- ander Lawson has changed the location of his geography classes from the basement to the top floor. This room is lucky enough to rate all new desks! ln room fifteen, we learned 'rithmetic How well Mr. Earl Decker taught us to figure! ln November of nineteen fifty-four, Mr. Decker was hospitalized. He has been at Sewickley longer than any other teacher. We see another new face in room sixteen this year. lt is that of Miss Frances Yonick. Miss Yonick directed the senior class play, Sev- enteen is Terrific! She has a seventh grade home room and teaches English, shorthand, and arithmetic. ln the next room we find the man who plans the money raising for the '55 Sewickley. Room seventeen is home to Mr. Lawrence Bedford M, Perlman 'Af Kobe: Dalla Betta and the business staff of the year- book. He teaches geography and first year algebra. Across the hall from Mr. Dalla Betta, in room eighteen, is jovial Mr. Charles Pritts. He teaches us to use the proper English. He is quite proud of his luck at fishing and hunting. lf you have a problem, be it great or small, Miss Ruth Fulton is the person who will help you with it. She helps us decide what voca- tion we are best suited for. Besides acting as guidance director, Miss Fulton also teaches classes in Latin and French. Room twenty-two is headquarters for the editorial division of the yearbook staff. Mr. Albert Andreo is our patient advisor. Twenty- two is also a paradise for those interested in science. You will find our chemists and phy- sicists at work. Our future nurses learn some of the basic nursing techniques in his science survey classes. You will find room twenty-five on the base- ment floor. lt is divided into two sections, A and B. When he isn't teaching drivers educa- tion, Mr. Samuel Hopkinson resides in twenty- five A. He teaches history, and is an assistant football and basketball coach. Mr. Robert Rodabaugh is another new fac- ulty member who holds his classes in twenty- five. McCune flwadcnnzi Uwz, Uuilzwlux, Un Although he is new in this building, he is familiar to Sewickley Township, having taught in both Rilton and Lowber in previous years. He teaches geography, writing, and spelling. Mrs. Anna Herbert has her home room in number twenty-six. She teaches health classes here. Most of Mrs. Herbert's time is spent in the new building as girls' gym teacher. She spon- sors the G.A.A. and advises the cheerleaders. Going straight through Mrs. Herbert's room, you come into the art room, number twenty-seven. Look at all the pretty pictures on the walls! lunior high school students are taught art here by Miss Ruth Bedford. She also teaches English. Don't stop here or we'll stay all day! lt's the cafeteria. Don't those pies look good! You've met all of our teachers in the old building, so let's hurry over to the new building. The first person we see is Miss Mary Pen- man. She is our music teacher. She directs the junior and senior high choruses. Part of her time must be spent teaching music in the different grade schools all over the township. lt is Miss Penman who helps us to get the music ready for our assembly programs. What's that strange noise you say? lt sounds like someone learning to play the violin. lt well might be, for Mr. William Kober's office is near. Mr. Kober gives music lessons, directs the band, and conducts the orchestra, This seems like a busy place. Here is where Mr. lohn Lasko instructs our boys in in- dustrial arts. Their finished products are so lovely! Last, but by no means least, in the boys shower room, we find Mr. lohn Bruno. He teaches boys gym classes and is the head foot- ball coach. l think you will agree with us, now that you have met the faculty of Sewickley Township High School, that they are a fine group of individuals. Teaching is an honor- able profession, overlooked by many because of the wages it yields. These persons are to be given credit for having unselfishly dedicated their lives to this worthy cause. 18 V ,.,.nq . The feeling of class loyalty was evidenced as we donned green gobbiesu distinguishing us as lowly Freshmen, but even then we were marked as leaders. This loyalty grew as we became Sophomores, gaining knowledge and preparing for our Shamrock Dance. Sur lunior year brought with it memories of cheering on our championship football team, dancing to the Bunny Hop and welcoming new classmates from l-larrolds. Bright new S. H. S. rings were found on our fingers. 'We proved our worth as upperclassmen as we decorated for a glittering Christmas Dance, and nearly burst with pride as our Prom was hailed as the most beautiful ever. During all this excitement Aren't Vfts Pliotogffni 9 jh 7955 Jim ww. um, 0,4 Um .mm we developed outstanding leaders in all phases of school life. The year of years arrived as we took our place as Seniors. Clowning our way through the Senior Pep Meeting, posing for pictures, rooting for the teams, packing the gym with our Dogpatch Dance, and watching our class play emerge as a wonderful version of Seven- teen is Terrific are memories that will last a lifetime. We still get a sentimental feeling re- membering May Day and can't forget that lump in our throat as we sang the Class Song and Alma Mater for the last time. With lingering goodbyes to friends and teachers, we face the grand climax, Baccalaureate and Graduation. lt's all just a memory now as we'll remember but never relive those glorious days. Daniel Couchenour, Gayle Vissat, and Ioyce Backstrom The l954-55 school year is a year in which the ability and skill of the luniors is all put forth to try to do their best. Many tasks are to be tackled and many new experiences to be had. One of these being the careful planning and Carrying out of the refresh- ments sold at the football games and the candy sold in the halls at noon-time. Other experiences the Iunior class encounters are: the thrills of having for the first time their own school ring and planning for the biggest event of the year -the lunior-Senior Prom. Our lunior boys are now taking part in more activities in the athletic field, consisting mainly of football, basketball, and baseball. This is the year most enioyed in your High School life. For in this year you learn the mean- ing of co-operation with other students during the preparation for decoration of many dancesg an important one being the Christmas dance. We will regret seeing our Iunior year and all its good times go, but we'll look forward to the Senior year with just as much enthusiasm as we had upon entering this school term. The success or failure of activities sponsored by the lunior class rests largely on the officers elected by the class, these being: President ........, Constance Cunnard Vice President ..... Charles l-lolornshek Secretary ................ Clara Milton Student Council . . . Danny Couchenour, Gayle Vissat, Ioyce Backstrom We are sure that with the help of the other Iunior students we will be successful in all we do. lbfm, .9v1lf1- KIM - Un, jluuks Jihgam, dual Qnnwm UL jim Mmm Back Row: P. They had entered into the doors of Senior High. After being in Iunior High for three years they found new and more interesting activities going on. Many members of the class participated in the Sophomore Pep Meeting which was a huge success and even Won the trophy for the Foot- ball Skit of 54 . Beside this, they took part in different organizations such as: band, foot- ball, basketball, majorettes, cheerleaders, and various clubs. They were loyal supporters at the football games, dances, pep meetings, and various assemblies. They had both succeeded and failed, but were trying to do their best. They are looking forward to their next two years in Senior High and hope they can do their job as Iuniors and Seniors. The officers, chosen by their class the pre- vious year, did their best at guiding and ruling over the class. Eager to assume their new duties, they were active in assemblies, sports, junior high chorus, and runior high student council. Enjoying social affairs they looked forward to their freshman party. As a class, they were well liked for good sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Class officers were: president, Yolanda Cheskyg vice-president, Dennis Lawrenzi, and secretary-treasurer, Marlene Hopkinson. Many hours of pleasure are spent by this feminine group singing and learning to appre- ciate the values of good music. This fine group of songbirds practice dur- ing the lunch hour under the leadership of their accomplished director, Miss Mary Penman. Lunch hour practice is necessary due to the many necessary duties of Miss Penman during our activity period. Under her leadership, the chorus has progressed rapidly this year as usual. The month of March is the time when the girls get a chance to display their musical tal- ent at the annual Music and Art Festival. lt was this group's pleasure, once again to pre- sent an entertaining evening of song to their parents and friends, The absence of the Freshmen girls next year will be a loss to this group, but a great gain to the Senior High Chorus. Won't You Play A Simple Melody? Every Monday during activity period, the halls of Sewickley High are filled with the de- lightful singing of the Senior High Chorus, which is composed of both boys and girls. Dur- ing the year the group sang a variety of songs fclassical, semi-classical, popular, and of course the traditional carols at Christmas, rang- ing from the gay, Deck The Halls to the spir- itual, Oh Come All Ye Faithful . Smaller groups of the chorus have ap- peared in the class assemblies, and the annual Music Festival. And what would Bacca- laureate, May Day, and Graduation be without the musical numbers by the Seniors of the or- ganization? The more outstanding musical members were chosen as our representatives to the Westmoreland County Chorus held at lean- nette High School this year. Participating in the County Chorus were Patricia Lash, Ruth Sitt- man, Robert Fry, Kenneth Hebrank, and Nich- olas Ginter, five of our most faithful Senior mem- bers.
