Xi-r.t Smith l' The Class of '56 is the most progressive class that Sewihi has seen for mans' vears. Under the leadership of our officers and sponsor. Mrs. Smith, we had a Sophomore Hop in March and sold socks in the spring in order to earn monev for our Prom next vear. When we return to school in the fall. our class rings will be waiting for us since we ordered them this spring. The Class of lQ5h has thus started a new tradition. Besides doing these things, we have struggled XYilliattt1 Yi-il. lfitgf-me Piltmztn. STUDENT COUNCIL An outstanding feature of this year's Student Council was the close co-operation between it and the students. Immediately after each meet- ing, the Student Council minutes were distributed to the home rooms so that everyone could know Council actions. School Spirit, another impor- tant item. was very much improved thanks to this teamwork. A stand against reckless driving was also taken by Council in an attempt to correct it. Council placed a soft drinks machine and two phones in the school. The Council sent delegates to both the State Convention at West View and the District Con- ference of Student Councils at Ambridge. COMMUNITY SERVICE Making a scrapbook of life in Sewihi to exchange with a school in Switzerland was the project the Community Service Committee pion- eered in. A better understanding of a foreign school will be gained because the Swiss school will send us a scrapbook in exchange. The Community Service Committee did not neglect its regular duties, for money was collected for organizations such as the Red Cross, the March of Dimes, and the Community Chest. Two special drives--collecting old clothing for the Goodwill Industries and canned foods for che hospital----were also held this year. The Band performed at all the football games. At half times. aided by the Indianettes, they executed many intricate formations. Marching for the Hallowe'en parade. snake walk. and Memorial Das' parade were other high spots of their vear. After football season the Chorus came into the limelight. Just as a pep meeting wouldn't be complete without the Band. neither would special assemblies at Thanksgiving. Christmas. and Easter without the Chorus, lts verv lirst big production was the Christmas cantata. Enlarged to a hundred voices. the Chorus added musical beauty to the pageant. Next on the program was a bid from the Pittsburgh In-and-About Music Club to sing at Carnegie Music Hall. ln March the Chorus competed in the Forensic con- test, another of their important events. Scattered through the vear were exchange assemblies with Moon and Leetsdalc high schools and perform- ances for Kiwanis and the Business and Profese sional XVomen's Club. ln the spring the Band and Chorus held their annual music festival. Through their combined efforts an outstanding program was presented. lftlity- tglil The Chorus The Band Him 13 I -V111 f3'll'!UNil'- IMIIN' ,I-IVLWII, lillllfl B-ll'lH'l1 I.l-.1-I. lfnuxx IU lil uc: l,.u'rx CIm1.1xx.ug lJ4.m Khulna l.1.lmu- ,X4l.uumuLi. llqlwn Ilipxlxy. Football With the loss of ten graduating lettermen from last year's Conference Co.-Champions, the Indians of the I953 season were an unknown quantity. The iirst of September came. and already the squad had been at work for two weeks preparing for the season's opener. As the team took the field against the Blue Devils from Coraopolis, they were determined to prove themselves. But Coraopolis fielded a well- rounded veteran team which hung a 9-0 defeat on the Indians. Over-eagerness and lack of ex- perience were the cause of defeat, for the game was much closer than the score indicated. Bellevue journeyed to Sewickley only to lose by an I8-0 score. With quarterback Kenny Johns leading the way. the Indians played the kind of ball they were capable of playing. Except for limited service. Dorlan Taylor, the All-Confer ence halfback. was lost for the remainder of the season. The team traveled to Avonworth only to take it on the chin by a Z7-0 score. The Ante- lopes went on to win the Conference Champion- ship. Freedom came to Sewickley to dish out a 25-O loss to the Indians. In this game Sewick- Sixl 5'-c-lulil ley could not get its offense rolling, for every- thing they tried to do seemed to backfire. Next the Indians traveled to Moon Township to hand out a Zl-6 lacing to the Tigers, Led by Gale Fisher, the whole team played good ball. The Indians followed this victory with a 3l-6 win over Robinson Township. Robinson scored first, but after this the Indians could not be stopped. The next game was against arch-rival Leets- dale at Leetsdale. It was a rainy afternoon as the Dalers scored a decisive 26-0 victory, to take the trophy back to Leetsdale. With Bobo Raso and John Whitfield moved to the backfleld. the Indians scored 12-O over Neville Island: and in the season's final defeated the Panthers of Avalon by a I9-0 count to com- plete a successful season with 5 wins and 4 losses. At tackle. Bobo Raso was All-W.P.I.A.L. Class B and All-Conference. John Whitneld was All-Conference Guard. Bill Carson. Jerry Vescio. and John Hess, three seniors, won second honors. Next year the Indians should once again be near the top of the Conference standings. X ff A . ir P 4, , s 4 ' ways' , ' X G H 0 fu 'lf Q ' -K 'Q x - xx A A QA- X A W .J . ' it With only one letterman returning, hopes for a successful basketball season were dim. None of the members of the team had varsity exper- ience and the ability of the team to win was not known. The starting line-up was comprised of one senior. Dave Caughey. and four juniors. Willie Dickson. Kenny Johns. Chuck Stroh. and George Schleiger. During the exhibition season. Sewickley's record of Z wins and 4 losses testified to inexper- ience, for the boys were capable of playing good ball. In the Section ZZ home opener. Sewickley edged Avonwotth 55-53. Incidentally Sewick- ley was the only team to defeat Avonworth until Irwin did in the W.P.I.A.L. Class-B Hnals. Fol- lowing a 46-44 loss to Neville Island and a 70-5l loss to Bellevue, the Indians rolled over Moon Township bv a score of 65 to 46. Suc- cessive losses to Avalon and Leetsdale by narrow margins of 59-51 and 57-48 hurt the team. but Svvf-n I v they rallied for a 60-47 victory over Robinson Township. Completing the nrst half of the schedule, Sewickley had a respectable record of 3 wins and 4 losses. Avonworth got revenge for its only loss in league play with a decisive 53.-Z7 win. Neville journeyed to Sewickley only to lose to the re- vengeful Indians by a 59-54 count. The team was now at its peak, for it lost to tough Bellevue 49-4l. The Indians repeated an earlier victory over Moon Township, this time a 65-58 triumph, and followed it up with a 49-4l upset victory over Avalon. Leetsdale almost got caught nap- ping. but managed to squeak out a 46-44 win. In the season's linal. Robinson Township scored a 37-35 upset win over the Indians. The Sewickley Reserves won 8 games and lost ll. Their experience. combined with the fact that only one man will be lost by graduation, should make the Indians contenders for the championship next year. The team started slowly, losing 8 of their first 10, but as they gained experience they came on strong to win 7 out of the last 8 games. They defeated every team in the league once, with the exception of Ross Township. Although some boys are lost. there are enough returning to form the nucleus for next year's team. GIRLS' LEAGUE CHAMPIONS In recent years tradition has always been on the side of the seniors. and this year was no exf ception, for, once again the senior girls were crowned champions of the Girls' Basketball League. The sophomores finished second, one game behind, followed by the juniors and fresh- men. Next year's teams promise to furnish even better games because of the valuable experience gained. lfilisi' Ilowz Erluina Biirlu-i't. Sylvia Ifuelis. Agnes Dye, Iixniiuvliiir lkipiiiitsiiiio. COME ON. let's do it again, This was the cry of the cheer leaders. From the beginning of school to the end. they cheered at football games. basketball games and pep meetings, never tiring and always trying to improve their stunts and cheers. These girls helped form the cheering section for Sewihi's athletics. THE INDIANETTES The Indianettes were organized in October of 1953 to augment the marching band of Sewiclc- ley High School. After intensive drilling and frantic last minute sewing, they made their debut at the Sewickley-Moon football game. Approx- imately 35 girls of the senior high school formed this group, taking their name from the Sewick- ley Indians. In the future this organization will participate in all the gridiron festivities. l'llllh'l' limvg llullt Nlarlin, llurutliy Cgunplmt-ll. Dolores Yullclt-mort.
