JUNIDRS OFFICERS l'resideut . ,, Barry Keller Vice President , Charles Cnesda S4-c-retarj'-T1'eas1lrer Gloria Prejva Preparing to assume Senior duties Last September 113 eager students entered the portals of Sewickley Township High School as the new members of the junior Class of 1953. Thev were introduced to in- teresting but perplexing new subjects such as plane geometry, chemistry, bookkeeping, typ- ing, and shorthand which they soon began to master. Since they had ordered their stan- dard class rings in their sophomore year, they proudly received them at the conclusion of the first six weeks. This was an extremely active year for the juniors who busily raised money for the junior Prom. Many of the girls sold candv in the halls and at the games as well as selling the Christmas candy. In ac- cordance with their fund raising campaign, the junior class sponsored the Christmas Dance which was the first gala social event of the season. They have their share of prank- sters as well as commendable peopleg they have succeeded and they have failed, but as a class they have tried to do their best and will try to do an even better job in the future. Ralph lwiolovich Sec.-Treas. .. ..,, Ernest Stefanon SUPHDMORES Make the future of S. T. H. S. look bright When the school term began on Septem- ber 2nd, the class of 'i55U returned to Sewick- ley as Sophomores. They had waited for three years to become members of the Senior High School, and they quickly assumed their new responsibilities. At the conclusion of their Freshman year, they had elected their oflicers. Charles Suman was chosen for the position of President, Ralph Molovich, Vice-Presidentg and Ernest Stefanon was elected Secretary- Treasurer. Valare Gorss, Edna Hoifer, and Annette Corso were selected to represent the Sophomore Class on the Senior High Student Council. Since Sophomores are permitted to participate in club activities, they became active members of all the school organizations. In addition, the boys who had played foot- ball and basketball in junior High now be- came energetic members of the Senior High teams. The climax of the Sophomore year was the Shamrock Dance which was delight- fully different and a collossal success. The Sophomores have tried to uphold the stan- dards of Sewickley Township High School, and will continue to the best of their ability to attempt to raise these standards. E. Stefanon, A. Then Juniorlhg The ninth graders returned to Sewiclilev in September to be confronted with many new and ditticult subjects. Since they had now chosen the course they wished to follow in high school, science, algebra, commercial and general math had been added to their curriculum. How proud they were to be called Fresh- men, but they frequently needed guidaneeg and their advisors, Mrs. Herbert, Mr. Andreo. and Mr. Shott were Friends in Need to many a bewildered Freshmen. They had chosen their otlicers while they were still in eighth grade and when the school year began these leaders quickly shouldered their new responsibilities. These officers were: President, Connie Cunnardg Vice- President, Gayle Vissatg Secretary-Treasurer. Clara Miltong Student Council Representa- tives, Larry lioughner, Nlarilvn Kasperik. Syl- via Nesbit. OFFICERS President Connie Cnnnard Viee-President Cayle Vissat See.-Trcas. Clara Milton h S-4 ner, M. Kasperik C. Milton days are over Many of the members of this class partici- pated iu the junior High western assembly which was acclaimed a huge success. They also took part in other Iunior High activitiesg and their boys became the junior High foot- ball and basketball heroes, while their girls displayed musical talent in the Girls Chorus. Nlany of the Freshmen supported the Senior High football and basketball teams at every game. The members of the Freshman Class are deterniined to become a real asset to Sewick- ley Township High School and they have established an admirable junior High record for any class to follow. As the school year draws to a close and their Iunior High School davs are oyer, they are preparing to assume the new responsibilities which they will face when they become sophomores in Senior High School. Taulk- tr E Urbas Lavella Looking ahead with keen interest NVith only a little trembling and anxiety, one hundred twenty-one eighth graders be- gan the second year of their journey through junior high. They had no outstanding achieve- ments in eighth grade, but they gained experi- ence to cope with the problems of the coming years. They learned many lessons, this year, but one of the most important was cooperation with faculty and classmates. They had a heavy class schedule and their participation in school activities was limited, but they enjoyed the assembleys, pep meetings, and movies as well as the football and basketball games. Their boys have learned good sportsmanship EIGHTH GRADE as a result of their experience on the junior High basketball and football teams. Other members of their class have displayed talent in chorus, orchestra, band, and cheerleading. They wisely chose the following energetic leaders as their class officers: President, Helen K. Taulkerg Vice President, Edward Urbasg Secretary-Treasurer, Rose Mary Perrinog Stu- dent Council Representatives, Bernadette Vanyo, JoAnn Lavella, and Phyllis Tempo. They hope that in the future they will main- tain the high standards which are their heri- tage as students of Sewieklev Township High School. OFFICERS Prvsitlent , ,. .llelen K. We found that this was different from other years: there were new teachers, new subjects, and new classmates. Our home-room teachers, Mr. Lawson, Miss Bedford, Mr. Hop- kinson, and Mr, McCune, helped orient us to Iunior High life by advising us on our many problems. Our class elected the following officers to guide us through our first trying year: President, Yolanda Cheskeyg Vice Pres- ident, Dennis Lawrenzi, Secretary-Treasurer, Marlene Hopkinson, Student Council, Geral- Officers resident .. , .,,. .,.. We competed with the eighth grade in the Fire Prevention Week essay contest and our Lynn Wachtler won first prize, a S25 Savings Bond, and later a gold trophy when she placed first in county-wide competition. Some of our students also participated in chorus, band, and student patrol, and all of us quickly acquired the school spirit and cheered the junior and senior high teams to victory. The greatest achievement that we accomplish- ed as seventh graders, however, was learning to work together. SEVENTH GRADE 10p ISUWZ I.. xlpuvllitrx. u. SClllllll'l'. L. Attired in its orange and black uniforms, it presents the spirited marches for pep meetings, football games, and parades. The most outstanding performance of the year was the annual band concert which was held on April 24th. At this presentation the band displayed its ver- satilitv when it played semi-classical and pop- ular selections as well as a collection of favor- ite marches. The four year band members are rewarded when they graduate by receiving a band jacket which they can wear with pride for many years. The future of the Sewickley Township band looks bright since there are only a few graduating seniors and manv talented under- classmen to fill the ranks in future seasons. bien with a horn! 47 CLUBS Journalistic Club This large and active group of juniors and Seniors meets monthly under Mr. Shott's super- vision to learn more about the problems of jour- nalism. The members are all anxious to discuss every phase of newspaper work and many are fascinated by the thought of a career in journal- ism. As a membership requirement each student must write an article which may be published in the ReHector,,' the school newspaper. This furnishes an interesting opportunity for creative writing and provides practical experience for those who wish to become journalists. S i Reflector Staff These are the members of the journalistic Club who take an especially active interest in journalism and are chosen by Mr. Shott to serve on the staff of the 'iHeilector.'i Their officers are elected by the Iournalistic Club. This yearis editors were Arlene Kreminsky and Dolores Ilal- ahurich and the assistant editor was Mary Kav Serro. The staff was composed of nine members and four faithful typists. This group and their advisor Mr. Shott were responsible for keeping the Reflector,' tops in favor with faculty and students alike. . I - . I l . ' My .y f ff- - . Fifth How: A. This energetic group of students deserves its reputation as one ot the most ac- tive organizations at Sewickley. Mllere are your seats. sirf' These are just a fcw polite phrases used bv our charming usher- ettes in their attractive costumes, whose duty it is to seat the audience quickly and quietly. These six sophomore girls are chosen by Mrs. Rainey and trained by the two juniors, loan Bissen and Barbara Golobish, who gained their experience as usherettes last year. Majorettes Leading the S.T.H.S. band are the nine high-stepping majorettes whose precision twirling and marching drill entertain and fas- cinate their audiences at football games and parades. Under Xlr. Kober's direction, the girls originate the formations which will be used bv the band in halftime performances on the gridiron. The majorettes as well as the band members receive jackets when they graduate. Stage Grew The stage crew is composed of eight jun- ior and senior boysg the juniors being trained to carry' on efficiently the following year. They work diligently backstage to assure the success of all the many performances that are pre- sented on our stage. They clean the stage. erect the scenery, and regulate the lights and curtains. The initiative of Mr. Albert Andreo constantly keeps the crew aware of their never-ending responsibilities. Cheerleaders These six girls who lead the cheering sec- tion at pep meetings and football games pos- sess the energetic qualities which characterize good cheerleaders. Not only do they furnish the moral support for the football and basket- ball teams, but they assist by selling the season tickets for the games. They likewise contrib- ute to the success of the Club by selling dance tickets and greeting cards. More than a hundred aspiring actors meet each month under the name of the Dramatic Cluh. Their director, Miss Smith, is a top notch performer herself and her never exhausted sup- ply of ideas Was largely responsible for the varied programs of the cluh. The members not only gain experience in acting, hut they also learn to appreciate the value of a good stage performance. In a more serious vein, the members read poetry by the World's outstanding poets and for those who are inter- ested, public speaking and recitation are import- ant phases of the program. The cluh serves a four-fold purpose: it elim- inates a great deal of the students stage fright. it gives the memheris training in the fundamen- tals of dramatics, it provides an excellent oppor- tunitv for developing self-expression, and it fur- nishes entertainment for the monthlv meetings. Senior High Student Council This group, which functions under Mr. McCune,s leadership, is the governing body of the school and is composed of three members from each class and one representative from each club. The main purpose of the council is to incorporate the democratic Way of think- ing into school life, each student thus partici- pating in making democracy Work. Being able to solve problems which arise in school will undoubtedly help to prepare the students for making important decisions later in life. This is another belief and aim of this import- ant organization. Orchestra This yearis orchestra consisted of approx- imately forty musically-inclined junior and senior high school students who enjoy music of a more classical type than that played in the band. NVith Mr. Kober as director, this A moment filled with pride, For couples always side by side. talented group performed at the Senior Play, May Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. Since many of the members of this group are underclassmen, the orchestra promises to as- sume a position of increased importance in the musical circle at Sewickley. Junior High Student Council The junior High Student Council Was or- ganized for the purpose of allowing junior high students to participate in the governing of their particular school activities. This ex- perience will prepare leaders to efficiently conduct the affairs of the senior high student council, who have been trained to understand and accept the allied responsibilities. In addi- tion it creates an early spirit of cooperation between faculty and students. Aided by Mr. McCune,s direction and advice these students are learning the principles of democratic gov- ernment. Senior High Chorus Despite a rather late start due to the illness of the director, Miss Penman, the Senior High Chorus still maintained an excellent record. This may he accredited to splendid leadership and the enthusiasm of the students. The chorus this year was unusually large and boasted an abundance of talent. This talent was displayed When many chorus members participated in assemblies and six represented Sewickley at the Westmoreland County Cho- ral Festival at Youngwood. Others Won rec- ognition in the Lions Club Amateur Show. Junior High Girls Chorus This year, as always, thc Iunior High Cirl,s Chorus provided an excellent opportunity for the female songbirds to display their musical talent. Under the leadership of their accom- plished director, Miss Penman, the chorus progressed rapidlv this year. The ninth grade members of the chorus presented a delightful performance at the Christmas assembly, and the entire chorus sang at the Music and Art Festival. These 130 seventh, eighth, and ninth grade girls sang popular and semi-classi- cal compositions of many famous composers. and in this Way acquired an increased appreci- ation for the musical masterpieces of past and present. 56 SICXIOII IIIGII CIIUIIUS uurih IInw: A. HIGH FUOTBALL lt is the junior High football team that trains the athletes for the future varsity elevens. This season the junior Bisons gained experi- ence and confidence which will prepare them for future gridiron encounters. Mr. Vassia. with his vast store of football knowledge, tn- tored the hoys this vear. The team had a mediocre season with one Win, two ties, and one loss. They defeated South Huntingdon 20-0, tied North Huntingdon and East Hunt- ingdon, hut lost to a more experienced Mt. Pleasant team. The boys have now learned the fundamentals of good sportsmanship. Put- ting into practice the high ideals which they have learned Will develop better students and citizens as well as outstanding athletes. Mr. V. Vassia-Coach D. Mowery, V, Stchan, ll. VARSITY VIGTORS A new coach and a new team were the most formidable foes of success for Se- wickley in basketball this year. Mr. Hopkinson replaced Mr. Bruno as head man. Despite the loss of seven players who graduated, he managed to whip the group into a fast fighting team that did us proudf' After winning five of their six starting exhibition matches, the Bisons embarked on their section schedule. They won their first two games and then lost two straight to Mt. Pleasant and Perry. In the next game, our boys accomplished a real feat. For the first time in fifteen years, a Sewickley team was the victor at West Newton. The first half of section play ended with a defeat at the hands of Youngwood. WVith the start of the second half, the Bisons won three straight victories over East Huningdon, South Huntingdon. and Mt. Pleasant. Visiting the section leader, Perry High School, the team was defeated by 21 points. Two successive losses to Youngwood and a vengeful West Newton ended the section sched- ule. In County Tournament play, the Bi- sons won their first game with a 39-38 victory over East Huntingdon. But they Faculty trainers and student managers confer Standing: S. Hopkinson Sitting: 1. This yearis team had a fine record: one of the best Sewickley has been able to post in some time. Much of the credit for- this should go to Mr. Hopkinson who overcame the difficulty of having inex- perienced men and produced a team which fought like veterans. For next year we hold high hopes. Six varsity squad members will be on hand to help brighten Sewickley's basketball future. 73 its agag A I F 9: iw 13 I 2 W ' ,fl w HOOPSTER HEROES Coach Vassia in conference with managers T.
