GOOD Mr. Good assumed the duties of the Supervising Prin- cipals Office on january 20, 1947. He had been Principal of Sewickley Township High School from 1936 to 1946. Mr. Good believes that even though the Education is a State function. the schools should be adapted to the needs of the local community and its young people. Mr. McKlveen MR. CRESSMAN Mr. Cressman left us on January 1, 1947. He was selected to serve as Assistant County Superintendent. Mr. Cressman was Supervising Principal of Sewickley Town- ship for 2916 years. During his tenure, the schools of the township made great advance in education and educational services. In all his work he kept uppermost the welfare of the boys and girls in the Schools. NVe regret losing Mr. Gressman but we wish him the success and happiness in his new position which he has earned by his long years of service. Mr. Good MR. McKLVEEN Education is a continuing process. All of us, from the youngest student to the oldest teacher inter- twine our lives, our hopes, our ambitions. our successes and our failures into one composite pa1't of the tremendous picture of life about us. How well we have lived for this day or this moment or how well we shall continue to serve for the welfare ot mankind has a vital significance. Tcnnyson SI-wicklvy - 2-I 1 idtfenfivm Seniors are on Stage In the fall of 1943, a group of inquisitive and very indefinite students ascended the steps of Sewickley Township High School to undertake a new career. Little did we realize that the career we had begun a few years back is now being given finishing touches. With the knowl- edge acquired and the treasured memories, we leave our beloved Alma Mater. During our Freshman year we were not thoroughly organized so to help eliminate the confusion, we elected officers-Yvonne Albright to guide us-Ralph Sirofchuck to assist her- Rutli Biddle to keep the records-Justina Petrini, Jeanne Trozzo, and Paul Nescot to represent us in the Student Government. We participated in various activities and proved to be quite a talented group. Boys were active in sports. The class took part in assembly programs and a Valentine Party, where we became better acquainted. VVe re-entered school following a three month vacation. This time the group was more experienced and ready to tackle our jobs. We again participated in various activities and elected officers to guide us. Ralph Sirofchuck was chosen President, Melvin Long, Vice Presi- dent, Walter Klich, Secretary and Treasurer, Helen Solsky, Jeanne Trozzo and Paul Nescot, Student Council. Jnniorsl We were really getting to the top! VVe had many problems. The greatest being the financial part. We had to raise funds for the social event of the year-the Prom! Sewickley We held movies and class dances, and also sold refreshments at the various athletic affairs. Another highlight of the year was the purchase of class rings. To guide us in this important year we elected Ralph Sirofchuck, President, Mary Altieri, Vice President, Donald Podbesek, Secretary and Treasurer. To the Student Council went Carolyn Argano, Vera Ivanac and Paul Nescot. We attained a high standard in school and felt capable of filling the position of Seniors. Yes, we really received the title of Seniors, a title all underclassmen look forward to obtain- ing. This year, to us, is very important, for at the conclusion of it we are on our own. We will think of this year in years to come. Incidents which We shall treasure such as the taking of Sen- ior pictures, proms, membership in various clubs, class day, participation in the field of sports, the band and the faculty. The officers for this year are: Ralph Sirof- chuck, President, Donald Lash, Vice President, Justina Petrini, Secretary and Treasurer, Jeanne Trozzo, Donald Fink and Paul Nescot, Student Council. Now as Seniors, we look back upon the years of education at Sewickley High and will try to achieve a high standard by it. VVe are saddened at the thoughts of leaving but because we have had capable leadership, ambition and initiative, we are ready to step out and challenge the World today. They were advised by Mrs. Cheselskc. Mr. Cyory. Mr, l,asko and Mr. True. They selected James Mismas as Prcsidentg Cladvs XVolff. Vice President, Tony llerbert. Secretary and Treasurerg Nancy Carlow, Joyce Cohctto and Jack Blehart as their repre- sentatives on thc Student Council. They enter- tained the upperclassmen by sponsoring a few assemblies, and for their own entertainment they held a St. Patrick's Day Party. Vacation drew nigh and the happy students were eagerly look- ing forward to their second year as Scwick- Iitesu. September 4, l9-15 found about 115 students, not quite as bewildered. looking ahead for an- other year of studies and fun at dear old Sewick- lcv . For their Sophomore vcar they elected as their officers: James Mismas, President, Patsy Trozzo, Vice President, Clair Mears, Secretary and Treasurer, Joyce Cobetto. Nancy Carlow and Edward lvanac to the Student Council. They were under the capable leadership of Mr. Boggs, Mr. Cyory. Miss Paul and Miss Albright. They went out in full force to join the new activi- ties now held open to them. A Snow Ballf, their first open pa1'ty, was held as entertainment. Before they knew it, it was again vacation time and they had arrived at the end of another year at Sewickley. September 3, I9-16 found a clamoring and eager group. mnnbering about 120, back in school. They now have that long awaited title of upperclassmen.D They are now Juniors. Their faculty advisors for this year are Mrs. Leasure. Miss Fulton, Miss Paul and Mr. Boggs, while the student leaders were James Nlismas, Presidentg Clarence Taylor, Vice Presidentg Sec- retary and Treasurer, Connie Farmerg Joyce Cobetto. Jack Blehart and Edward lvanac repre- sented them on the Student Council. They held a Christmas Partyl' which was a great success. Later in the year they sponsored a movie and another party. They also helped out by giving assemblies. As is common with most Juniors, the highlights of the year were the receiving of their class rings and the Junior-Senior Prom. They have again come to the end of another Vear. They are happily looking forward to their posts as Seniors. , Adelaide Comini St-wit-kley - 26 Top Row, left to right-NV. McAlpim', R. Ang:-lini, N. VVe are drifting through the foamy clouds into a world of sunshine and joy-lookl- there ahead-a golden gate with the inscription The Class of '49, A beautiful angel greets you, asks you to enter, and you are amazed by the beauty of this new land. The angel points to a sign, you read it: The class of 49v is building its way into heaven. They have successfully completed 2 years of hard workmanship. You first go to their world of 45 . The angel leads you to this world, the beauty of which fascinates you. It consists of 98 castles of gold and silver, the homes of the pupils. On a hill nearby are four larger castles occupied by their four guar- dians-Mrs. Herbert, Miss Hayden, Mr. Crad- isek, and Mr. Lasko. In the center is a starlit tower occupied by our chief-advisor, Mr. Good, and around him are smaller towers lit by moon- beams. These are occupied by our representa- tives Jeannette Gallingane, chief, Ronald Riddle, co-chief, Marie Peternell, secretary and treas- urer: and three representatives, Joy Brunazzi, Wilda Trozzo and Dorothy Lapcevic. On one side of the castles there are 2 stadiums, one is for the football players and the other one is for the musical students. A dance floor is ou the ex- treme left, lighted by the stars, where all parties are held. An auditorium on the right was built for assemblies. The angel motions to you. You follow through a silver gate to the land of M46-47 , The beauty here is even more glimmering. Here are 96 jeweled temples, made of rubies and dia- monds, representing the same only a more pro- g1'essed class. The 3 larger towers are occu- pied by Mr. Gyory, Mr. Fullerton and Mr. Grad- isek. The smaller towers are occupied by Jeannette Callingane, chief, Eugene Wesolowski, co-chief, Emma Lou Bossart, secretary and treasurer, and Ioy Brun- azzi, Dorothy Lapcevic and Phyllis Trozzo, class representatives. Student Council Eighth Grade Histor One-hundred eighth grade students entered the Sewiekley Township junior lligh School at the beginning of the school term of nineteen fortv-six and forty-seven. There was quite a mix- np for the first few days because no one knew just where he was supposed to go. The halls were so crowded we could hardly get through the long lines to om' classes. Although after a week or so we settled down to om' new tasks and duties. Om' stations were in Room 26 with Miss Bedford, the teachcrg Room 16. with Mr. Pritts controllingg Room I5 with Mr. McCune settling all disputes. Mr. Andreo, Mr. Decker, and Mr. Lawson completed our junior-high faculty. All the students were very well pleased with the two new subjects-shop and home econ- omics. NVe girls were under the guidance of Sewickley Miss Paul in home economics, the boys shop class under the instruction of Mr. Lasko. After a few months our class held an elec- tion. Anna Marie Steiner was chosen to guide us, Peggy Taylor to keep the records, Frank Kozel, Betty jean Triacca, and janet MeCune for Student Council. During the year we attended assembly pro- grams every other week, alternating with the seventh grade. Much to our enjoyment we at- tended most o fthe dances that were held. VVe were glad to attend the new junior high school this year because it will help ns to better adjust ourselves to the routine of our school work when we return next year as freshmen. janet McCune - 34 l'ilsl Huw, lvl! lu rigl1tfXV. The Junior High arrangement has been an encouragement to us inasmuch as we feel that we have made a step upward in acquiring our edu- cation. Frank Duzyk was chosen to guide ns through the year, assisted by Marion F rye, with Margaret Comini to look after our financial affairs. Shirley Kaiser. Joanne Covi and William Armor were elected as student council members. XVe held our own dances during the year and had an assembly in which the students dis- played their talents. All through the year they have worked hard to learn new drills and perfect old ones. Their twirling ability is something to behold. Six of the Senior majorettes are leaving this year. They will be replaced by six underclass- men who will be chosen by the band. The Senior members are: Lorraine Beddick, Head Majoretteg Sally Kline, Assistant Head Ma- joretteg Irene Huha, Ruth Biddle, Theresa Ken- esie, and VVilma Funk. Elaine Laben, Joyce Cobetto, Margaret Plassio, Norma Bruno, Dol- ores Cheselske, Ioan Yellig and Helen Uhrik are the junior members. The game with Georges Township was forfeited to us because of the use of illegal players. The next two games saw the Bisons victor again-defeating East Huntingdon F33-0, and the following week winning over Derry Township with a score of 13-T. This was the lirst time in the history of our school that we have ever defeated the Derry Township Eagles. Our luck was still with us when we opposed Leechhurg, downing them hy a score of 13-0. Despite this handicap, under the capable supervision of Mr. john Bruno, the team lived up to Sewickley Township standards of good sportsmanship, and emerged with undaunted spirits and a number of victories to their credit-two victories having been won over East Huntingdon Township and one over South Huntingdon Township. They defeated Penn Township once only to have them turn the tables on the return game-Sewickley losing by only two points. Having suffered several losses to Young- wood, WVest Newton and Bostraver, and one to Elizabeth, the boys did not come out on top. but did place fifth in Section XVII competition. the the the the team copped a thrill-packed 39 to 37 win. They were defeated, however, the following night by Derry Boro 37-20 which put them out of the run- ning. Sewickley made a good showing at county tournaments. In what was perhaps most exciting game of the second night of XVestmoreland County Basketball tourney, Seniors leaving the team include Caviggia, Klich, Andrewson, Mitchell, Eberhardt, Beards- ley, and Podbesek and Fink, who only played part of the season due to illnesses which forced them to quit. In witness whereof: We the class of 1947, the Testators above named, have hereunto subscribed our names and aflixed our seals this first day of May, in the year of Our Lord, one thousand nine-hundred and forty-seven. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1947 Se-wickley - 57 Believe lt Or ot by 1lipley's twin sister It's the Atomic Age! Homes no longer give the appearance of being square or rectangular blocks, but rather, they are huge peaks of prefabricated cottons soaring into the skies. These dwellings were very ably constructed by .lack Sereno, who could not have established his five thousand homes Cmonstrositiesj per day if it had not been for the invention of the xyzvomontometer frepeater pencilj by his friend and assocate Albert Natale. The landscape has taken on a new perspective. Having tired of the much overused color of green in his surroundings, Jack Packe removed the chlorophyll from all plants and replaced it with the dye from discarded Sewickley Twp. band uniforms. As a result, we have orange trees, orange grass and orange flowers-a glowing tribute to the memory of good old Sewickley High. Ah, but our Alma Mater is still prosperingl Students continue to saunter up to the drug store and bank hills to resume their studies. Mr. Boggs earned his pension and retired. He has been replaced by Robert Patterson, who finds it difli- cult to fail a member of any of his math classes since Dean Chion invented the brain gazer, an instrument which can penetrate the cerebrum of the teacher to find the correct answer to a problem. These are sold to the students at lOc apiece. To prove this is a bargain price, with each purchase, super salesman, Carl Yurkovich includes a copy of the song Open the Door, llichardf' Many sequels have been written to this operatic masterpiece but the most brilliant, by far, is Roll Me Under the Mat, Pat, by one of our alumni, Maria Carbin. Sports have progressed throughout the years. We still use feet and we still use balls in football but the manner of playing is somewhat changed. Girls par- ticipate in even this sport. Their orange shorts and orange jerseys contrast beautifully with Iack's newly developed background. Bob Andrewson has taken the task QP? of coaching these female champions. Leo Caviggia handles the bas- ketball at Sewickley these days. Baskets are imbedded in the ground so that players now shoot down instead of up. This is easier for Walter Klich Ir. than it is for Robert Mitchell jr. since Walter doesn't have to drop the ball quite so far. Travel between the Earth and her adjacent planets has become almost in- corrigible. Rocket crashes are so numerous Cespecially between the Earth and Scwickley - 58 Believe lt Ur ot Marsi that it has become necessary to engage traffic cops to stand at each stop sign so that vehicles do not deviate from established 15,000 M.P. H. Three of the most efficient traffic cops are Leonard Cercher, Tom Kosalec and Donald Podbesek. Any unidentified bodies found lying around in wrecked ships are sent to mortician Donald Lash. Those corpses Don cannot revive with his secret formula of life he cremates and puts their ashes in Betty Iohnsonis garden so that her flowers will grow better. As we travel from city to city in this district we not some more familiar faces. Passing through Arona we see a tall fellow with a long beard tDon Rhodes, putting fat lastj the final block on his front porch. We stop in Keystone long enough to watch Helen Solsky bring her cloudovator down to earth. Helen trans- ports souls from here', to there', for Donald Lash. Bill Beardsley has been elected mayor of Rillton by an overwhelming majority fa mayor being considered necessary since Rillton now has two paved roads instead of onei. Lowber has Emily Steadman's Hying shoe factory to give it prestige. Emily's head supervisor is that eminent shoe authority, Mary Altieri. On the last lapse of our little tour we pause in Yukon to view Mary Louise Allenis private fishing pool. Mary Lou is the Television Queen of the Universe. The presence of other Sewickley alumni is instrumental in the success of our world of today. We attribute the large number of tourists to the two large life like statues of Gertrude Repovz and Lorraine Beddick that adorn each entrance into this thriving metropolis. Iustina Petrini has found the cure for cancer and other diseases that were so fatal to so many years ago. Ralph Sirofchuck is cap- tain over all captains of all sports. William Kissinger is the humanitarian of all wild life. He fiies around carrying messages while the pigeons stay home and keep house. And, last but not least, Donald Fink handles the controls that de- termine when it shall be day and when it shall be night. We now hesitate in this revolution of time. Who would have believed years and years ago that our classmates would have grown to such high esteem? Why, we would! For, after all is said and done, there is really only one-class of 47 it's you. lean Mayers Sewickley - 59 NAME Amelia Yackovich Mary Louise Allen LL Mary Altieri L L L LL Robert Andrewson LL Dorothy Aronckes .,.. The years gone by and years to come, To me, they canit compare. My mind is slowly wandering To days when one would say This school is just like all the rest, Itis always work, and never play. But, unless you have forgotten WVe also had some fun. Donit forget the dances And the football games we Won. of I947 Don't forget the assemblies, As Well as movies too. So when you go to criticize, just take a thought or two. You may be very brave to say lim glad this is my last, But when you're digging ditches, You'll wish theyid never past. Iill think of Sewickley High School When l'm cleaning streets in heaven lill never forget that good old year Of Nineteen Forty-Seven. Sam Murkley ustice Triumphs A truck came rolling down the hill, Itis speed was very fast. A man stepped out into the road, I thought heid seen his last. Then there came a screeching grind, The truck came to a stop. The driver jumped out in a rage, And quickly called a cop. The pedestrian was terrified, And stood there all a quivver, And then the cop came speeding up In his 1919 Hivver. They argued and they hollered, And they squabbled quite a while. For each one had to be suited, In his own peculiar style. They took the matter to the highest court in the good old U. S. A. They put them both into the clink, And now theyire there to stay. The moral of this story Is to always stop and think. Don't get mad and call a cop You'll sure land in the clink. 7 D. Lash, D. Lintner and I.
