a new beginning January 10, 1970 is a date that recalls a wealth of emotional thoughts. lt was on that day that a sav- age fire swept through the main building of Sewickley Academy destroying classrooms, the library, and the auditorium. The reality of the charred ruins and rubble was all too apparent the next day. ln the traumatic shock that followed, it was hard to visualize what the future would hold. But from necessity came the first phases of ac- tion. There was a tremendous outpouring - parents, students, friends, area residents, all working to salvage what remained of the Lower and Middle Schools. The moving and hauling ef- forts continued steadily in the ensuing weeks and months while the school itself adjusted to tempo- rary quarters and unfamiliar surroundings. Now we can look back from 1973 to see what has been accomplished. ln the aftermath of the fire came the swift plans to rebuild, renew and mod- ernize, to create an academic institution unlike any other, to build upon the past, to prepare for the future. The task of rebuilding was over- whelming but so were the varied responses to it. The first grader's penny as well as the massive contributions by friends and foundations bought bricks, books, and beauty. What stands before us today is a tribute to all those who expressed love and commitment at a time when it was needed the most. For out of anguish came strength, out of separation came unity. Three years later we have fulfilled a dream. The Academy has risen from the ashes. We have become one. 8
