Q if May, 1973 Dear sir: Because you are young and hand- some, because you are physically able and mentally alert, because you enjoy a healthy argument, because you have a fine sense of fair play, and because you are a warm and thoughtful individual, we all love you, Mr. Dugan. Honest. The yearbook staff a new beginning January 10, 1970 is a date that recalls a wealth of emotional thoughts. lt was on that day that a sav- age fire swept through the main building of Sewickley Academy destroying classrooms, the library, and the auditorium. The reality of the charred ruins and rubble was all too apparent the next day. ln the traumatic shock that followed, it was hard to visualize what the future would hold. But from necessity came the first phases of ac- tion. There was a tremendous outpouring - parents, students, friends, area residents, all working to salvage what remained of the Lower and Middle Schools. The moving and hauling ef- forts continued steadily in the ensuing weeks and months while the school itself adjusted to tempo- rary quarters and unfamiliar surroundings. Now we can look back from 1973 to see what has been accomplished. ln the aftermath of the fire came the swift plans to rebuild, renew and mod- ernize, to create an academic institution unlike any other, to build upon the past, to prepare for the future. The task of rebuilding was over- whelming but so were the varied responses to it. The first grader's penny as well as the massive contributions by friends and foundations bought bricks, books, and beauty. What stands before us today is a tribute to all those who expressed love and commitment at a time when it was needed the most. For out of anguish came strength, out of separation came unity. Three years later we have fulfilled a dream. The Academy has risen from the ashes. We have become one. 8 '1 I 1 'wvqi f 1 ,, x, 4' Q A f 3'Dnfv -- ., E S I I ,,.......-f,--' SEIIIERIEQ 1853 A 1:5 4,6 '1,g',1If vu? ,13g5f,,,x-,. , ,, -Mil. 94' f 'i -1 M' , . , -:MS - i , E S 2 -E , A , ., 9, .., ,. , 1.5,- M ,f M, ' fb, Qi aiixa, M W. .3 3 .. Sometimes in life they make five or minus three, and some- times the blackboard topples down in the middle of the sum and leaves the class in disorder and the pedagogue in a state of frustration. . . winston churchill london, may 7, 1946 11 Mr. Clifford Nichols, Jr. Headmaster Sgr:-s...,.'- 1 BOARD OF TRUSTEES: Mr. G. In two Series he made twenty-one hits, at least one in every game, one of two men to do so in two seven- game Series. The fans roared in unison when he banged out his 3,000th major league hit in the last game of 1972. We will not forget Roberto Clemente. He represented the very best of the many good things of baseball and of life itself. 131 W- Q .,, 4' l ,, ..,, action? ,B ' ' MU Wm .,.,,., ,gy l, x Y 'r'-a'v1i9r4fc,vL1,55n., 47 '35 , Q V M. , ,gg wS4v2?s222iiw,.,+srffzw.:u ' ,- .
