Students into whom lsador Mandell had breathed life hear of his death and try to reconstruct a picture of the man in their minds. He was a memher of the History De- partment and Senior Adviser for the graduating classes of Seward Parh High School. He was a manuiwho enjoyed life, who delved deeply into its mystery to find beauty and mean- ing. He profitedfrom his reading, painted as a hohhy, and in general reveled in the finer things of life. To the very last, he worhed hard because as he said, I have so many things todo. Everyone that knew him, hnew him for what he was. Since he consid- ered man his hest friend, it was not unusual to find him trying so hard to help everyone hetter himself. He was tolerant of everyone, hind to au. He had a smile and an encouraging word for everyhody he met. Faculty and student alike loved him. It is fitting, therefore, that this issue of the Almanac he dedicated to lsador Mandell. PER IINNEL lllllEU'l'0It Dear Graduates, At Seward Park we have tried to foster a feeling of belonging to each other so that learning takes place in and out of class among partners rather than rivals. We have tried to cultivate in you your special talents in sports. music, and art, commerce, mathematics, language, and science. Each has developed a different trait of your personality and thus has led to your uniqueness. The greatest virtue of all, however, is the fostering of cooperation with the community. Our school has encouraged social action of a high order -- stoclcings for invalids, fumiture for the veterans, contributions for cancer relief and support for many philanthropies. We have many things to he grateful for. Our country at great sacrifice has emerged from a war with its liberties unimpaired. The greatest of these is our right to develop mind and soul tree from fear or coercion -1 provided that we do not interfere with the equal rights of others. Large sections of our population are heneliciaries of civil liberties formerly denied them, and all the people through social security are finding freedom from want. The championship and extension of such rights hecome our responsibility at home and ahroad. Carry these principles into action: democratic living, creative thinking, social service, and helping others to enjoy these priceless possessions. Seward's Emporium has just started its semi-annual sale. The goods are stocked on the first floor, being prepared for shipment to the other lloors and other departments. They are shipped to certain departments where they may never arrive. When the Complaint and Adjust- ment trhce these lost goods they may discover some peculiar situations. For instance, one student was sent to the girl's H.E. Department hut never arrived. Francis explained that a laoy has no place in the girl's HE. All goods. however, loolc very smart and neat and are guaranteed to last for four years. Buy now, before these goods are marked up. Yes, huy now, for in a few months they will no longer he freshmen. The employees of Seward's Empo- rium are laced with the same problem of disposing of their surplus stoclc. 'Some of these Sophomore commodities are so up to date that they are flawless, at least in their own opinion. Due to the minor improvements of education the name Freshman can now he changed to Sophomore. These surplus sophomores can tum themselves on at any time, in any room, and talk on any subject from apples to zinc. Because of microscopic irregularities. the Sophomores will he sold hy the teachers or even he given away free of charge. By virtue ol its unpopular characteristics, the Sophomore Set is no sooner left alone than it will go out of control. Alter the sale we expect to make some drastic improve- ments on these surplus sophomores, so that by next year their name once more will he changed. At that time they will he lcnown as the Juniors and their reception will he nothing short of marvelous. Pa, M-fi? rg, fi a H 6,1 93g Xin Q l fl -A INVENTORY SALE This is the time ot year when the employees of Seward's Empo- rium start to talce stoclc of their products. They painfully go down the list ol items they've talcen in during the past years and arrive at the following conclusion. Either they have miscalculated and have ordered too many luxury items, or they are missing the more staple commodities. This necessitates a quiclc trip to the Com- plaint and Adjustment Department. Luclcily. this is only a small part ol- the inventory sale. Yet for all the checlcing and re- checlcing ol: stoclc, the lnventory Sale does have its gayer moments. For even in the darkest stoclcrooms the glow ol' a not-too-distant Fire fsalel penetrates. For relaxation fduring worlcing hours, the stoclc-clerlcs frequent the Paramount and Capitol Theatres. To restore their energy lor the final sale, the Juniors cease eating in the fifth floor lunchroom and try its annex--Vito's Lunch. The Inventory Sale soon comes to an end. hut the stoclc-clerlcs are not morose, for this sale is followed by the greatest ol' all hargains- the Fire Sale. o x N 0 ' FIRE SALE The budget-minded consumer will not overloolc this bargain. The special economy size consists ol sow, Student. 2096 Regents. 1096 Senior dues, 296 Hats and Pins. 1396 Graduation Pictures. and 596 Senior Week. Nowhere, no. nowhere else. can one get this amazing offer. lvlemorics are patented and cannot he repro- duced successfully twice. Regents add tears ol ioy to memories. Senior NNeelC consi ts ol three dilterent formulas. First, Dress- Up-Day malces one feel proud. Secondly, Class Day provides one with leadership. Thirdly, Red-Letter Day is an emhlem ot superiority. Graduation pictures are everlasting memories. The mainstay and haclchone ol it all is lmown as the Seniors. Hurry, Hurry, and buy it, and remember only one to a customer. The Fire Sale ends soon. LOSS THE EMPORIUM has one hig sale after another. Some last hut a few days, others for a period of many years. A few are successful, many are failures, yet many sales counters long wiiiremain imprinted on-the permanent sales receipts of thosevwho walked through the crowded Emporium-foie memories. All the way down, at the other end is a tiny, faintly tit counter. Before it, stand green wohhiy-imeed youngsters who are new at this business. They are timidiy examining the wares. In truth, there isn't much that they have to offer except their own clear, open hearts, freshly out of grade school, hut they smile with the courage of a heginner and painfully con- tinue on. At the opposite end is a brightly lit table with a wealth of articles for sate: Regents Books and answers. The jocuiar faces peer and seem to say that they know what it is all ahout, that they like this store and they're going to buy all they can so that they can leave satisfied. - In the middle of this hustle and happy, noisy throng, a large group is seen to assemble near a long, smooth marbled-topped tahie with exquisite engravings and with veivet and satin trimmings. Here are offered insidious articles: past synchronized homework papers, a cutting card, a hitch on the elevator, and a late pass. In the thick of the rushing and pushing mob, straining towards the door is seen a very austere counter. For some reason a great many people seem to he repelled hy it. Cn it, are a history Rgents paper complete with cor- rect answers, dental and medical GK, and a perfect literary essay. Then the customers are suddenly shoved out of the doors, partly through their own volition hut especially with the help and advice of an always faithful staff of the Seward Park High School Emporium. Suddenly, the purchasers are outside, never again to enter the same door, the same way, with the same fear and pleasant expectation oi only a few transactions hetore. The final unreturnahie, unexchangeahie re- ceipts are in the customers, hands. Now they face the world.
