Besides having an excellenT scripT wriTer and gang oT sTooges, SalTz has an excellenT delivery himself, Turning Tair jokes inTo biTs oT humor +ha+ has everyone howling Tor weeks. l-le works hard, in TacT. has been working hard Tor years, and deserves every biT of success he has achieved. Charlie owes his radio populariTy To his nose. NoT ThaT iT has very large proporTions buT during his youTh, iT was knocked ouT oT shape in a TooTball game. The peculiar TwisT To his nose immediaTely esTablished his populariTy. Everyone laughed aT his Tace buT soon They laughed'sTill more aT his jokes. AT The raTe Charlie SalTz is going now, he will soon,' bef so popular ThaT his mere presence will be enough To insure The success oT a ioke. CLASS OF JANUARY l935 BOOK REVIEW How To Succeed by Lawrence Dick HIS book is parTicuIarIy inTeresTing because iT Touches on a viTal problem, one ThaT is buried deep in The breasT of every human being. Everyone wanTs To be a success.A There are, however, differenT sTandards and ideas of whaT success really is. Some consider social and financial presfige uITimaTe success. Some feel ThaT confenfedness and happiness should be classified as success. Mr. Dick develops This Theme as he goes along. One poinT is made clear by 'Mr. Dick. I'Ie claims iT is aImosT impossible To be- come a financial success by working one's way up. The suresT way, he sTaTes, To become a success, is To marry The boss' daughTer. However, since boss' daughTers are so scarce, he proposes ThaT no boss be allowed To employ more men Than The number of daughTers ThaT he has. In This way, he hopes To make This parTicuIar Type of human more plenTiful. MOVIES I-IOSE screen lovers, I-larry Marcus and Frieda Zimmerman are aT iT again in Roses in Bloom , The! IaTesT screen aTTracTion aT The Main STreeT Theafre and seem To have anofher of Their freguenf surefire hiTs. Under The exceIIen+ direcTion of Frank Zupnick, who also auThored The sTory, They amuse and Thrill Their audience by Turns, so ThaT an enioyable Two hours slip by wiThouT any dull momenTs. Done in all color, The firsT picTure of iTs kind, aIThough There have been oThers wiTh parT coloring, boTh Mr. Marcus' and Miss Zimmerman's looks are shown off To good advanTage. Indeed, neiTher ever looked guiTe so well as They do in This picTure. The sTory of The picTure is very IighT and enjoyable. The hero, Tommy, played by I-larry Marcus, is a riveTer, while The heroine, Mame, is played by Frieda Zimmer- man. Tommy is a hardboiled, ouTspoken young man who enioys noThing so much as slapping down a fellow worker or anybody else. I-Ie meeTs Mame aT The beach and decides To call her aTTenTion To his presence by convenienTIy swimming afTer her and pulling her under waTer unTiI she promises him a daTe. Mame is indignanT buT will noT go back on her word. I-Ie Takes her To all The amusemenfs and in spiTe of herself, Mame can'T help laughing aT his rough wiT and admiring him. AfTer The evening is over They boTh go home. I This is all forgoTTen unTiI The STeeI Workers' Union gives a ball. AT This funcTion, Tommy's foreman inTroduces him To his daughTer who is Mame. The sTory moves along humorously wiTh Tommy vainly Trying To gain Mame's favor buT failing miserably. Then, Tommy dramaTicaIIy saves The flife of Mame's faTher. The resuI+ is ThaT Mame discloses ThaT she loved Tommy all along and They wed. An enioyable Time is promised To anyone who sees This -flicker. Page TwenTy-Three
