CLASS OF JANUARY T935 SCRAPBOOK AuThor's NoTe--In my younger days, I saved every biT oT informaTion appearing in The daily newspapers ThaT perTained To The Senior Class oT I935. Now ThaT I am old and gray, I derive greaT pleasure from Taking my scrapbook off iT's shelf aImosT every evening. I read every line of iT aIThough iT is yellow and beginning To Talk aparT. Before iT does, I wish' To have iT prinfed so ThaT iT will remain for posTeriTy. So here iT is.-newspaper clippings I collecTed' in my youTh. Lawrence Dick REPUBOCRATS NGMINATE SYLVIA GERBER! YLVIA Gerber Today, afTer a four hour privafe conference wiTh AnThony Cognaifo, powerful poliTical leader was selecfed presidenTial candidaTe of The RepubocraTic parTy. In The evenT ThaT she is elecTed, she will be The firsT woman presidenf in The hisTory of The UniTed STaTes. Miss Gerber's nominaTion came as a disTincT shock To everyone, including friends and opponenTs oT The RepubocraTic ParTy. I-ler name was noT even menTioned in connecTion wiTh The nominaTion, noT even as a possible dark horse. AnThony Cog- naTo, who nine years ago became so powerful ThaT1.he wresTed The power of seleclringi The presidenTial candidaTe from The nominaTing convenTion and has become known as The presidenT maker, was The man responsible for The whole idea. Polifical observers are poinTing ouT ThaT This was The shrewesT move ThaT The presidenT maker has yeT made. The female .voTe of This counTry amounTs To ap- proximaTeIy 26,000,000 ouT of 47,000,000 baIIo+s, or 5,000,000 more Than The male vofes casT, according To The,lasT naTional elecTion. Because The women will naTuralIy voTe for one of Their own sex. and The male voTe will also be drawn in because of parTy affiliaTions and oTher reasons, The Repubocrafs expecT To puT over Their candi- daTe in high sTyle. The news of The nominaTion caused Turmoil among The Demopublican ranks. NOT since The double parTy spliT of I944, has such exciTemenT been wiTnessed. .AT TirsT Demopublican leaders scoffed aT The idea, claiming ThaT The people .would never supporT a woman candidaTe. I-lowever, in Two hours Telegrams and phone calls swamped parTy offices, pledging supporT To The candidaTe. This sTarTedi The bigwigs of The Demopublicans feverishly hunTing for a Temale candidaTe from Their own ranks who could be a maTch Tor Sylvia Gerber. Miss Gerber has been prominenT in poliTical circles for years. I-lowever, she has never held or run for any poliTical office. She claims she will run on a new plaT- form, one ThaT will please boTh liberals and conservaTives, Though if This can be done is yeT To be seen. She will sTarTT on a campaign Tour in a week. The old Senior has been Torced To abdicare Taking wiTh him all he could lay hands on. The new Senior is in power Through his inTegriTy Four long years he hasprepared and labored and planned Tor This. ln power, he Tends To amuse himselT, noT a verydiTTiculT procedure. l-le spends money on cold Tea Teas, on The aTTempT aT Tormal Prom and on The knick knacky Class Day, money which would be oT much greaTer beneTiT were iT used To socially educaTe The wondering liTTle Treshmen. Through all This The Senior conTinues wiTh his educaTion despiTe The opposiTion oT The TaculTy. l-le 'plans To conquer' new worlds or reconguer The old. AT The peak oT his enioymenT and prowess, physical as well as menTally, a revoluTion occurs. The Senior is Torced To abdicaTe To The hidden ,ioy oT The TaculTy. He Tlees To make room Tor The new Senior. The King is dead. Long live The King. Lillian Vogel Page EighTeen
