Science The Science Department helps prepare the youth of today to become the scientist of tomor- row. ln a variety of courses we try to answer questions about our environment: the plant and animal world, the fields of mechanics, light, heat, sound, and electricity, the basic principles of matter and its changes, and the earth-all with emphasis upon their relation to man. This department affords the citizen of tomorrow a knowledge of the rapid technological advancements. Mathematics The Mathematics Department meets the needs of all students here at Sewanhaka. In an age when mathematics plays a leading role in everv business field, a basic training in number and spatial relationships is essential. The Mathema- tics Department fills this need. The varied courses in mathematics give each individual a chance to choose the training which will best benefit him in his particular field of endeavor. Home Economics Preparing girls and boys for their future roles as members of a family is the pri- mary purpose of our Home Economics De- partment. Whether it be mending a sock, changing tri-cornered pants, or Putting the finishing touches on a savory stew, stu- dents in this department are prepared for the situations they will meet in family life today, and later, as they marry and estab- lish their own homes.

Citizenship Education The goal of the Citizenship Education Depart- ment is to educate students to be loyal citizens, who are reasonably well informed in domestic and world issues. This is accomplished through lively class discussions, individual research, visual aids and field trips. Further interest is fostered in social studies by various contests such as the Amer- ican Legion Essay contest in which our students are encouraged to participate. Business Education Today, in the business world, it is increasingly advisable to have a knowledge of related opera- tions and techniques. At Sewanhaka, the Business Education Department fulfills this need by offering courses in typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, opera- tion of business machines, business law, and re- tailing. Besides working in class, students acquaint themselves with up-to-date business practices and iob requirements by visiting business places of interest. Industrial Arts - Vocational - Technical Specifically designed to meet the varying edu- cational needs of its students, the Industrial Arts- Vocational-Technical Department is divided into three broad categories. Since the objectives in each division are different, the end results are also somewhat difterent. The Industrial Arts program enables the stu- dent to understand better his own talents by giv- ing him an opportunity to explore a number of different trades and occupations on an elemen- tary level. Vocational courses, on the other hand, give the student more specific and advanced training in one of the trades, or in one particular phase of the trade in which he is interested. Finally, the Technical courses give knowledge of a more theoretical nature and are geared for those students planning to continue their studies in college.
