Second row-Mr. John Ouligian, Dr. Charles Solit, Mr. Alfred Anderson, Mr. John Clark. The students here at Sewanhaka are most fortu- nate in that the Mathematics Department operates as it does. Its many courses, which are designed to meet the needs of all youth, try to develop ability in nu- merical and spatial relationships so that it may serve each individual effectively in his field of endeavor. The intensive four year program offered by this department is designed to train students for mathe- matics scholarships. Science, the field of ever-increasing importance in our modern world, is consequently a department of major importance here at Sewanhaka. The obiective of the department is to provide fundamental informa- tion on the Physical and Biological sciences as applied to our daily living. phi' ln the Commercial Department, our students are trained to take positions in the great world of business without having to pay the price of a private business school. The Long lsland Association of Secretaries offers a yearly scholarship for secretarial students wishing to continue their education. Each teacher in our department strives to instill in his students an under- standing of the economic, political, and social forces which motivate the world and the headlines. Included in this department are three separate divi- sions: Industrial Arts, Vocational, and Technical. Each has a separate obiective. They are: to provide the opportunity for exploration in a variety of occupations, to give advanced training in a specific trade, and to provide a thorough background for students planning to go on to engineering schools, respectively. 4986? The United States Census Bureau tells us that eighty per cent of all girls marry within five years after grad- uation from high school. That means that before long each Sewanhaka girl graduate will probably have the role of American Homemaker. That is the reason for the importance of the Home Economics Department, whose most important aim is that of encouraging good home and family relations. S. H.
