Sewanhaka High School is one of the most prominent schools in the United States to- day. lt serves a large suburban section of New York, and ade- quately represents both rural and urban lite. Four years of work and play have formed many memories, and it is to the preservation of these that the Class of l948 humbly present this yearbook, The Totem of 1947 . We have applied many ideas to the formation of our annual, some tried and proven, others new and challenging to the im- aginations of the staff. It has been our desire to capture the atmosphere well enough to match up to the pattern portray- ed by Dr. Nicholas Engelhardt, who said, The great high schools ot America can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and Sewanhaka is one of these schools.

bedicativn YI We, the Class of 1948, proudly dedicate our yearbook, The Totem of l947 , to the Student Council. We dedicate this book, not only to the present Council, but to the Councils that have preceded it, and those that will continue in the future. The Student Council symbolizes the spirit of Sewanhaka, the feeling that each student has, knowing that he has a voice in the govern- ment of one of the greatest schools in America today. lt not only governs the students-it plans stu- dent activities, sponsoring the Purple and White Ball, the Student Council Bazaar, and bonfire rallies. It gives sanction to various club activi- ties. This service to the school is carried on by weekly meetings, directed by the president. Each homeroom has a representative wno is sup- posed to be present and represent his homeroom by voting for or against the motions made by fellow council niernbers. All this does not go on without thanks, however, for the student body realizes what a great service is being done for them and for the school. Since the first Student Council in 1930, with its president, Donald Croop, to the present Coun- cil under President Russell Thone, the Councils have increased their responsibility as the experi- ence of the past guides them. They have taken upon themselves more and more of the student government. Through the years, these Councils have made possible a great measure of self- government, and have proven this system to be practical and successful. Each succeeding Stu- dent Council develops ideas which malce it great, and also carries on the traditions estab- lished by the Council before. Credit is due to the Councils that served dur- ing World War ll. These Councils sponsored the collection of money for the 'War Fund, and no call remained unansweredg no quota re- mained undersubscribed-
