Four years of work and play have formed many memories, and it is to the preservation of these that the Class of l948 humbly present this yearbook, The Totem of 1947 . We have applied many ideas to the formation of our annual, some tried and proven, others new and challenging to the im- aginations of the staff. It has been our desire to capture the atmosphere well enough to match up to the pattern portray- ed by Dr. Nicholas Engelhardt, who said, The great high schools ot America can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and Sewanhaka is one of these schools. PUBLICATIONS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES SENIORS CLUBS MUSIC SPRING, 1946 SPCRTS ADVERTISEMENTS X .xx X K lk M in W an .. iy 'T Con ten tA bedicativn YI We, the Class of 1948, proudly dedicate our yearbook, The Totem of l947 , to the Student Council. We dedicate this book, not only to the present Council, but to the Councils that have preceded it, and those that will continue in the future. The Student Council symbolizes the spirit of Sewanhaka, the feeling that each student has, knowing that he has a voice in the govern- ment of one of the greatest schools in America today. lt not only governs the students-it plans stu- dent activities, sponsoring the Purple and White Ball, the Student Council Bazaar, and bonfire rallies. It gives sanction to various club activi- ties. This service to the school is carried on by weekly meetings, directed by the president. Each homeroom has a representative wno is sup- posed to be present and represent his homeroom by voting for or against the motions made by fellow council niernbers. All this does not go on without thanks, however, for the student body realizes what a great service is being done for them and for the school. Since the first Student Council in 1930, with its president, Donald Croop, to the present Coun- cil under President Russell Thone, the Councils have increased their responsibility as the experi- ence of the past guides them. They have taken upon themselves more and more of the student government. Through the years, these Councils have made possible a great measure of self- government, and have proven this system to be practical and successful. Each succeeding Stu- dent Council develops ideas which malce it great, and also carries on the traditions estab- lished by the Council before. Credit is due to the Councils that served dur- ing World War ll. These Councils sponsored the collection of money for the 'War Fund, and no call remained unansweredg no quota re- mained undersubscribed- Fu6l1cat1onA JT ff QI X O U Q Q lif 'W' 55 Y, v, VWQN Za' 3 6,35 Xu K BOBCAMNAV4 ,, Margaret Cdcioppo -vi 4 Editorfin-chief L 'as PRODUCTION STAFF and editorial afggzaitmgnts. We have had personal conferences, and at- tended conventions: Syracuse, Columbia, New York University. We have been mak- ing appointments and taking pictures. We have endeavored to present something new-something interesting and personal. We hope we have succeeded. I am deeply indebted to my staff for their untiring efforts. Phyllis Glasser has been responsible for our pictures, and loan Dunne for copy and advertisements. My gratitude goes out to the rest of the staff. lane Powell, who won the Floral Park Board of Trade Emblem Contest, originated our layout. Audrey Stoeffler has completed a very fine job with clubs. Congratulations are due Kathleen McGee for the successful completion of the Senior Pictures. Burton Mendelsohn de- serves a gold medal for keeping our finances in the black in the face of inflated costs. Seymour Bossert's publicity program is well worthy of note. Thanks are also due Aura Echeandia for her Class section, and Gloria Oshansky for the Girl's Sports department, and well done to Bertram Miller for his Boy's Sports. P1 . iylhs Gigs-,ser I , Oqn Dun ne' Kar 1715.6 Mr. Anastasio appointed loan Dunne advertising manager last autumn. The goal was set at twenty pages, instead of the usual sixteen. That called for plenty of work. The call for vol- unteers was answered with great enthusiasm. Twenty-four Sophomores signed up. The as- signments were given out, and the staff really went to work. This staff is believed by the editors to have proven to be most co-operative. Thanks to them, the goal was surpassed and the book now has twenty- five pages of advertisements, the largest a Totem has ever had. These excellent results have enabled us to finance the greatly increased costs. Bottom Row-luli, Rees, Froehlich, Deering, Miss Carboni, Del-fxith, Ariguilc, Ruby Since we were Seniors, we were more wor- ried than some of the other classes about those Ianuary exams. Most of us weathered the storm. The Senior play was a huge success. lt couldn't miss with an all-star cast and Mr. Iones as adviser. May twenty-eighth was the date of the en- joyable movingeup assembly, yet it gave us a sad feeling to think that we were leaving and others were taking our place. And then graduation-the day that we rea- lized that we may never see some of our class- mates again. Vle also realized that we were on our own: that we must depend to a large ex- tent upon our own judgments. Our last class project was the magnificent Senior Ball. lt was the one thing that We had all looked forward to, the climax of our Senior year. 'We cannot leave this alma-mater without a sincere thank you to our faithful advisers- Miss Carboni, Mr. Hoffman and Miss Gallimore. Ersun y Ccmtillc, Argentine exchange student. 'We thank them for their guidance, for their well- nieant advice, and most of all, for their time. Nr. Their purpose was to design, con- struct and paint sets for plays, operettas and concertsg and to prepare stage equipment and light- ing for assembly programs. The club was led by Robert l-laslam and advised by Mr. Idwal Iones. STUDENT COUNCII. Running-on a newly-formed Coalition ticket, and winning by an overwhelrning majority in the elections, Se:-1anhaka's student governrnent welcomed a new vigor and vitality to its ranks of leaders. President Russel Thane, Vice-President Roberta Baker, Treasurer Thomas Hagan and Upper and Lou-Jer l-louse secretaries Peter Iacobsen and Gloria O'Brien have left an indelible mark on the school's record of progress. Eusses were provided by the Student Council to transport Sewanhakans to away games, and broke all records for attendance at such contests. Plans were made for a one hundred dollar Vfar Memorial Scholarship. Vfith a special edition cf the Chieftain in purple ink, Purple and Vfhite 'Neek went over with a bang. ln short, the reservation has seen a great effort by these officers to contribute to the name which is so typical of Sewanhaka and the student government so closely associated with it. Sacluem P aye The Sachem Players was one of the most ac- tive and well known clubs in the school this year. One of the most important and outstanding events of each year has been the annual 3-act play put on by this hard-working group. This year it was the comedy success Corrie Rain or Shine. They also had other numerous activi- ties, such as visiting Broadway productions and studying the sets, lighting and sound effects after the performances. At each meeting the members got together and had fun putting on pantorngnes, skits and one-act plays. Also at regular club meetings they had interesting makeup demonstrations and periodical reports followed by discussions about the theater by the club members. The main idea or purpose of the club is to de- velop the skill and knowledge of students who are interested in stagecraft, that is: acting, mak- ing and designing scenery, costuming and make-up, stage lighting, stage terms, sound effects and also the reading and criticisms of contemporary plays. The Sachem Players are under the direction cf Mr. ldwal lones, and the officers: Agnes Bly- seth, Lucille Casey, Margaret Lampasona and Pita Shaw, president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer, respectively. Only Sophomore girls are eligible for this activity. Lois Doering was captain ot the squad and Mrs. Frances Kodera their adviser. Finding a spark, the Vlarriors in these last games gave us plenty' of that long missed pigskin color. V-'ho can forget the near-upset of a highly favored Chaminade eleven on Election Day? Then came the valiant up- hill triumph of our varsity in the Far Rockaway engagement, Using both the T and the double wing-back formations, Coach Twitchell shifted his gridsters into a winning combination. Rounding out the starting back- field were Harry Curtis, bearing the brunt of fullback and place kicking chores, Walt lvanuskus, and Art Herschaft with two touchdowns apiece, and diminutive Vinny Murray with three. Holding down the flanks stood Prusik and Lind. Fill- ing in at tackles were Schubert and Orech and our hard working middlemen were Beigart, Byers, and Mulcahy, with the latter being center and backer-up, Because of the spirited play and the immense popularity of Curtis and Ivanus- kus, the players and fans alike made these two honorary cofcaptains of the Brave squad.
