Stan forth Principal Florence Utter Dean of Girl: - H QI :KEN 0Ward YYAKOXA rncipaif 05472 Nafdahl Am,Pi1 Ofaoyf Willian McQueen Prerident Board of Education The Board of Education wishes to extend its congratu- lations to members of the Senior Class, and to hope that the time each of you has spent in Sewanhaka, will prove to have been happy and profitable. The Board also hopes that, as you grow older, you will look back with happy memories to the years when you were students here. The Board hopes, too, that the interest of the graduates in Sewanhaka will not cease with their graduation, but will continue, for the school needs the sympathetic understand- ing of all the people. Graduates can do more to promote that understanding than almost any other group. The maintenance of the interest and understanding will serve to keep our school in the top ranks, among the better schools of our State. It is the sincere wish of the board that each of you will find happiness and success in your future fields of endeavor, and that Sewanhaka will have helped to make it possible. WILLIAM L. In january there was a special graduation held particularly for those students who planned to join the Armed Forces. In this way they do not miss the thrill of realizing their four-year ambition. The Senior Class has been well-known for its musical talent. The Sewanhaka Trio, consisting of Grace Clark, Laura Lemmert, and Anna jean Hennessen, has done a lot of good singing to uphold that reputation. Another not-to-be- forgotten Senior, who rates high in musical cir- cles, is Donald Lyons. The December Winter Dance is an annual Senior presentation. Wartime shortages and difhculties were not noticed because of the effective decorations. The big event in any Senior's mind is the Senior Ball, because it is the last dance they can plan and carry out together. The date of this Big Event was june 25rd. Many of the Seniors will go directly into the Armed Forces after graduation. To them, the students of Sewanhaka pay special tribute and wish them God-speed in the immense new job they must undertake. Arthur Johnstone was voted into the office of President of the junior class. Robert Leary was elected Vice-President, Margaret Hightower, Secretary, and Walter Worthington, Treasurer. Early in the term the juniors held their first dance, the Autumn Ball, the first such dance in the history of Se- wanhaka. For this affair the gym was gayly decorated in green and yellow, with neat stacks of corn stalks and a few pumpkins placed around the floor to lend an autumn atmosphere. A huge Harvest Moon winked down at the dancers from above the bandstand. Petite Autumn Ball This book, the Totem,' is a parting gift to the Seniors from the junior class. The entire job of publication was undertaken by them and is mr way of paying tribute to a great Senior class. The Valentine Dance in February was a so' cial and financial success. On May 12 the big dance of the junior year, the junior Prom, was held. A Stardust theme was used for the deco- rations. As the end of the school term nears, the juniors are anxious to achieve the honor of moving into the positions the graduating Seniors held. This is done in a ceremony called Mov- ing-Up Day which was the purpose of the assembly in june. Glamour Wluofl Wfoufl WW Soph Hop joe McMahan or Sophs? ' 'U Our QM Who's Who ln Popularity The King and Queen of the Student Council Bazaar were Grace Clark and Peter Ostrott by an overwhelming majority. As was the custom the elected couple remained on a raised pedestal for the whole evening. Both were ahead of the nearest competitor, who in the case of the most popular girl was Brenda XX'ilson, Student Council Vice-President, who claimed seventy-four votes. Fifty-four were counted for Senior Class vice-president Al Krug, in the most popular boy field. Running close behind were Beatrice Cooper and Donald Lyons with eighteen and thirty-seven votes respectively. Grace Clark proved her popularity by scoring again in the Best All-Around Girl Voting. The popular senior claimed one hundred fifty-five votes. Trailing eighty votes behind, Brenda Wilson once again got the bridesmaid honors with seventy-five counters. Best All'Around Boy, Dick Cramer, beat out Ostroff and Krug by two votes. Bill Epler brought up the rear with thirty-nine votes. Only twelve votes separated Pat Hughes and Barbara Dougherty for the most Attractive Girl. In the final count Pat 'Hughes had sixty-two and Babs tallied an even fifty. In a surprisingly strong finish, Don Lyons came out tops in the Best Looking Boy voting. Dick Cramer followed and the booby prize fan Elizabeth Arden beauty bookj to Dave Faulkner. The Most Athletic Boy was Dick Cramer, next were Bill Epler, Ed Rock and Paul Lynner. Muscles joan McCabe won out in the Most Athletic Girl. Brenda Wilson and Jean Best were the runner ups. Brenda XY'ilson and Hank Paterson ran away with the top honors as the Best Girl and Boy Dancers. Sewanhaka's Best Dressed Boy and Girl turned out to be Bob Wilson and Janice Corn. Peter Ostroff, Dick Cramer, Babs Dougherty and Brenda Wilson received the other honors. Bill Appleton and Eleanor jackson lead as the Most Popular Couple. The Most Humorous Student being Pete Ostroff and also the Most Scholarly. Ray O'Hare was voted as the Hardest XX'orker. Again Grace Clark came out on top as the Best Disposition. Also Ostroff took away the title of the Best Mannered . . 1 ,vt 1- .' x X . 5 a . I f 4 O , a , I Football Completing their best season in a decade except that of 1942, the team had a record of six wins, two losses, and tied one. For the second time in the school's history the team defeated both Hempstead and Chaminade in the same season. The first contest was against a strong Valley Stream team, but not strong enough as the 18-0 score proved. Queripel, Muller and Cramer scored. On October 2, Mepham came from behind in the second half to win by a score of 19-14 spoiling any chances of a perfect season. Rowe and Cramer scored. The following Saturday it was a determined team that beat Oceanside 6-0. Bill Epler's drive carried him across for our tally. This victory made it the 13th win over Oceanside in a row. Everyone was looking anxiously ahead to the Hempstead game. In this game the starting line-up and second stringers were: Andy Mierdercks, left endg Ken johnson alternating with joe McEvoy at left tackle, Sam Stemple at left guard and Dick Troy at center. The other half of the line was Steve Cannone at right guard, Will Vassar at right tackle, and Clarke Muller at right end. The backfield had Ed Rock at quarterback, with Ev Rowe and Bill Epler at left half and Dolph Queripel and Charley Greves at right half. Dick Cramer was fullback. Other worthy players were Bob Pelligrino, Marty Krug and Chris Verron. Sewanhaka was victorious over Hempstead after 60 minutes of tough and close play, 13-6. Bill Epler and Charley Greves scored for the Reservation. In a good game until the second half the fans saw Freeport win 25-0, with Paris and Wright scoring at ease. Ed Rock of Sewanhaka looked especially good on the defense. Scrappy Chaminade on November 2 was nipped 6-0 in the closing minutes through Dick Cramer's interception and flashing across for the only score in a very tight game. After a two weeks lay-off Westbury's so-called giant killer went down before the Tribe to the tune of 19-7 score. Charley Greves crossed first with Epler and Cramer following to complete the score. In a Thanksgiving Day game at Lawrence Stadium the two teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock. The big thrill came when the Indians, namely Dick Troy and joe McEvoy, stopped Billy Wilson of Lawrence after four futile attempts. l in l ' Sam Stcmplc Stanley Mann Coach Al. Twitchell ff rd:f,,,v 'll Conch Ed. Carter Ka Dick Cramer was the leading ground gainer with an average of 8.3 yards per try. Charley Greves and Dolph Queripel shared the passing honors. Ed Rock did the brainwork. Sewanhaka placed three men on the all-scholastic teams, Cramer and Cannone on the second team and Sam Stemple on the third team. The jayvees had a record of 2 wins, 3 defeats, and 1 tieg meeting Valley Stream, Hempstead, Chaminade, Mineola and Mepham twice. Mr. Twitchell, Mr. Lesher, and Mr. Carter, who has since left school, were varsity coaches. Mr. Mattice and Mr. Becker were coaches of the Jayvees. .. I , ' Andy Meierdriecks Dick Crummer Ken johnson Basketball Playing in the South Shore Athletic League for the first time in the schools history as a basket- ball team, the Indians did a fine job. The climax of league competition came in the first round of the sectional playoffs at Lawrence when Oceanside opposed the Tribe and beat them 36-38 in the final minutes of the first overtime period. The Indians opened at home with Chaminade only to lose 32-22. Following that defeat the quintet nipped Great Neck 24-22, and bowled over Freeport away and Hempstead at home, 44-38 and 38-28 respectively in the first two league games. These games brought Sewanhaka up to the Christmas vaca- tion as leaders of the S.S.A.L. Class A teams. Following a two-weeks lay-off, the team played host to Richmond Hill High, a top team in Queens County play, and lost 47-31 playing a ragged game. Spirits rose again as the Warriors played their third game taking Valley Stream 35-29 at home. Then arch rival spelled again defeat as Chaminade won 49-13, Sewanhaka only sinking 3 field goals, the lowest number of the season. Traveling again, the quintet beat the Mepham Pirates out- in the final seconds winning 27-29, Duffy Gunderson coming through with his reliable set. Coming to mid-season form, Lawrence was easily beaten 33-26, this making it 5 in a row win the S.S.A.L. competition and strengthening Sewanhaka's place over Mepham. Next Baldwin High lost its seventh straight 41-28. In the third and last game with Chami- nade, the Frenchmen had another field day winning 26-41. In a home game in the afternoon with Garden City the 5 added another win to that column, running up a 43-31 score. Three days later underdog Freeport arose in an upset winning 46-38 and, as though this was the beginning of the end, Hempstead at their home court ran rough shod over the Indians, the score being 53-32. The following Friday found the Reservation enjoying its biggest night with a 60-30 win over Valley Stream cellar-team in the S.S.A.L. A week later in a night game with Mepham, the Pirates came from behind to win in a close game 33-26, at the same time taking first place in the league standings. With only one more league game left the Tribe trounced Lawrence, 45-34. In the final scheduled game of the season, Baldwin, not having won any of its games, used Sewan- haka as the goat and won on a long looping set shot by Walt Lubkeman, Baldwin's ca tain. The season completed, Sewanhaka was still second to Mepham in the S.S.A.L. and eligible to play in the play-offs, the winner for undisputed championship of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. As we have already said the Indians were put out by Oceanside in the first round, the game being the best the 5 had played all season without a doubt. john Gunderson led the team in scoring with Paul Lynner next with 155 and 149 points respectively. The only other player to break the century mark was Pete Innvar with 107 points. Lynner had the best average of 8.7 points per game and then Gunderson next with 8.6. Innvar had 5.9. II' Q CF' ll-ng an I ', if . .Y 5 -. 'Uv Q. LaCrosse A usual scene in Sewanhaka's three ring sports whirl during the Spring are the LaCrosse men. Commonly dubbed by the student body as the butterfly chasers because of the similarity of their Crosse to a net of that type. True redskins as Gordon Satterly, the dead eye of the team, Art QE.H.j Wider, and our boy Harry Schaefer, start for Coach Al Twitchell on the attack. Playing midfield are legs Ed Rock, tiny mite Bill Epler and handsome Ray Schueler. On the defense such brawny men as Tony Jurich, Sam Stemple and bob-white Joe McEvoy help out the two versatile goalies, low-brow Will Vassar and Gio DePasquale. It is also worth a paragraph to mention such players as passing Dave Faulkner, Buzzer Rowe, Joss McElduff and Dolph Queripel for their fine work. Playing their usual eight game schedule so far the team has lost but one game and won three. In the Hrst game a heart-breaker against Garden City the team lost to 7-6 score, but in the next game also at home, the team showed its mite and won over Poly Prep 16-5. Clark Muller's jay-vee team also won 10-4 to complete a perfect afternoon. Clark a post-graduate is helping out Coach Twitchell and doing a fine job. Away at New York Military Academy the Braves romped to a 10-1 win, holding a shut out until Gene McGray of N.Y.M.A. came thru in the closing minutes of play. In the last game up to the printing of this article, the Reservation scored over Manhasset by an 8-4 score. In the second game the Jay-vee's were deadlocked 5-5. Tom Nolan and jim Wilkerson left for the service before the season began. In tribute to Tom, a last year's veteran, he was elected honorary captain. Gordon Satterly is the present captain of the varsity. Captain Satterly leads in goals scored with, Art Wider second, and Bill Epler third. QQ, - A v.,N'3i tw . nv- Baseball Slated for a eighteen game schedule the Indians havent come up to most expectations or have looked like any of the good teams in the schools history. Handicapped with the loss of twelve regulars from last season and numerous injuries it didn't mean the club didn't have talent or class. Before the regular season got under way the nine saw action in four practice games two with each Garden City and Malverne High Schools. The Braves lost and tied one with Garden City and beat Malverne twice. Opening the regular season away, at Mepham, the team won 1-O. Harry Curtis scoring in the first. At home the next day the order was reversed as Richmond Hill romped to a 9-3 win. The loss was probably due to traveling fatigue the preceding day. Big Irv Burton came back to win his second game, and had it against a strong Chaminade team until the seventh inning. Then in a downpour the score was tied 5-5 and it was called there. Four days later on a Monday Chet Redzikowski lost his first game against the Garden City Trojands previously played in a practice game. The score was 3-2. Walt Kelly, an addition to the team, chalked up his first win against Baldwin 9-3. Irv Burton lost his first game at home playing host to Freeport. The Red Devils, scoring two runs in both the third and fifth inning, won 5-O. In the second game of May on the second, the Braves behind Redzinkowski tri- umphed 4-2 helped by doubles from the bats of Harry Curtis and Irv Burton. Hitting the road again against Great Neck, the team faltered 4-2, with Vin Doherty losing his second game, although the Indians made a valiant try in the final inning, putting two runs across. A game with Hempstead still on the road with the fourth consecutive game found the boys from the Hub enjoying a 4-1 lead as the game ended. Mainstay, Irv Burton, could not hold his first inning lead and consequently, lost his second game. In the final game, before this article went to press, the ball club lost 4-0, a shut- out against Valley Stream. Dick Williams starting for the first time was charged with the loss. It was at this time tha jim Devine and Harold Jacobs, regular shortstop and second baseman, respectively, were out with injuries. Other regulars who rate being mentioned and who have had a hand in winning more than one game are: Charley Greves, Dick Troy, Frank Leistman, Stan Martinsen, Dave Kraft, Frank Wilde and also our unreplace- able managers jiggs and Charley. Mr. Henry Mattice succeeds Mr. Ed Carter as baseball coach. 2 1 ' H Indoor Track In its second season of Indoor Track the boardmen, numbering eight members, competed in three impor- tant meets, all being held at the Madison Square Garden. The first was the National A.A.U. Cham- pionships. Our lone man to place was Dick Cramer, third in the 60 yard dash. A week later Sewanhaka ran a relay team in a special event for the public schools and finishing third in their heat. That evening in the Knights of Columbus Meet, Cramer and Martin reached the quarter-finals in the dash and Mellevold, Armitage and Dickerson fin- ished l0, 12 and 15 respectively in the half mile run- ning against college competition. i IxILlVlIlAlII1lIlllL' P'.H VC' li' fL.S.lNI.C. Some of these were last years' captain Henry Wocker, jack Kresek, Tom Burnard, john juster, Al Witzig, Andy Amato, and Bill Wyat. In their first meet with Freeport, the cindermen came out on top with fifteen points to the good. Dick Cramer, the one man track team, took the only double winning in both the 100 yard dash and the 220 low-hurdles. Also Al Krug and Ralph Martin placed in the 220 sprint. Gordon Armitage in the 440 yard run and a trio in the 880 run, namely, jimmy Fitzpatrick, Bill Dickerson and Mel Armitage. john Mellevold ran true to form in the mile with teammate Ed McCullough second. The relay team also won finishing up the running events. In the field we were shut out in the shot-put but tied for second in both the high jump and the pole-vault. Dan Maurer eaked out a close third for the Reservation in the broad-jump. The Indians again won in a triangular meet with Mepham and Valley Stream. The Indians with 54 points, took six firsts with Cramer again scoring a double in the Century run and the low hurdles. Mepham followed with 34 points and Valley Stream trailed with 30. With the season far from finished the Indians have a good chance to go undefeated and also gain a top ranking spot in the sectionals at Farmingdale. Mr. Stanley Mann coached the spikesters with Mr. Fritz Becker assisting in the latter. Mr. Sigmund Slszka coached the Indoor trackteam. Gordon Armitage S -- - Cross Country The cross-country harriers captained by john Mellevold split a six dual meet schedule winning three and losing the same number. In the first meet at Mepham the team lost, not placing a man in the first six places. At Hempstead Lake State Park our runners lost again although Sewanhaka took both second and third places. In the final loss of the season Chaminade won with Mellevold of Sewanhaka being the only Indian to place. Malverne High was the Harriers first victim as Mellevold broke our home course record in 12 minutes 34.7 seconds. This was only the beginning as the team beat Valley Stream with Mellevold again breaking a course record. The final win was over Ocean- side, away, with the teams captain taking second and McCullough third. At the Long Island Championships with nfteen teams competing, Sewanhaka placed third with Mellevold Hfthx and McCullough eighth. at .--w af' xx ..
