Conklin and Ridley The swimming team got off to a fine start by capturing the Southeastern lnterscholastic Swimming Championship in Atlanta. The well rounded team swam to a twenty point margin En winning this meet by taking tirst place and a host of seconds and thirds, Ensign Conklin, Spencer Boyd and Bill Baker cap- tured individual first places with Conklin setting a new record in the IOO yard freestyle, This meet, added to the other cham- pionships held by the team, marked the well rounded, high spirited group that makes up this year's squad. The team serv- ed notice to Prep swimming teams in the South that they were out to repeat last year's performance when they were undefeated and took two championship trophies. Working hard to defend their Southern lnterscholastic Cham- pionship title they took last year, the team took two out oi three dual meets before heading for Chapel Hill, North Caro- lina, in guest ot another championship. The only loss was lo Memphis Air Station, 39-36. The swimming team, led by Captain Ensign Conklin, Larry Shannon and Luke Glancy, all of whom took first places, show- ered the other teams into submission as they again took top honors by some twentyefhree points, For the second straight year in a row the Sewanee Fish made claims to the South's finest swimming team a title that they well deserve. Credit should be given to Coach Lewis Hill as well as his fine team for their outstanding efforts. lt was through his efforts and hard work that the team has improved and continued io show a lot of spirit. The team has two of the finest divers in the South in Spencer Boyd and John Hussey. Boyd won the Southeastern diving title with Hussey right behind him in second place, These two, be- cause oi their close rivalry, are constantly improving and are sure to set more records in the future, The team was well represented in the Eastern lnterscholasti: meet in Trenton, New Jersey, with Spencer Boyd winning the one meter diving and Ensign Conklin taking a fourth in the IOO yard freestyle. On the Mat: Fitchett, Hardi- son, Sanders, Carper, Page, Williams. Standing: Blount, Wohl, Cater, Broadwell, Fisher, Armstrong, Malone. For the first time in the history of the Academy a wrestling team has been organized for scheduled competition in the Mid- South Association of Schools. From Coach Whitey Urban they received the best coaching possible and from Captain Ed Fifchett very capable leadership and assistance. Captain Fitchett, with only one defeat to mar his record for the season, went on to win the l55 lb. Champion- ship in the Mid-South Wrestling Tournament in Chattanooga, When the team entered the Mid-South Tournament they had under their belts matches with McCallie, Castle Heights, and Notre Dame prep. ln the l00 lb. class Rabbit Knight placed second only to an experienced opponent from Castle Heights. Ed Sanders placed third in the l3b lb. class by pinning Harn- mond of McCallie, ln the l55 lb. class Ed Fitchett defeated Gibson of McCallie for the championship after pinning Fred Shaw of Baylor to enter the finals. Joe Hardison had a very good year. ln the tournament he lost a tough referee's decision to Jenks of Castle Heights. Bill Broadwell placed third in the Heavyweights class of the tourney. Others who looked good during the season were Dick Fisher, Wally Malone, John Baker, Guy Blount, Happy Williams, Dick Wohl, Sonny Town and Pete Hasell, These grapplers show great promise in the future, As a team they finished fourth in the Mid-South tournament. To the future wrestling teams of S.M.A. we wish the best of luck in the many contests which will confront them in the sea- sons to come. Surely considerable credit is due to Coach Whitey Urban and Captain Ed Fitchett for producing such a fine team in their initial year. One day, early last fall, a car pulled up in front of Ouintard. A happy cadet ran out to the vehicle and began transporting bar-bell and plates up to a room on the 4th floor, This was the start of weight lifting at S.M.A. Before long a small group of early enthusiasts were working out regularly under the supervision of Spencer Boyd, who had previous ex- perience at G.M.A. Gradually more boys became interested, more bar-bells appeared throughout the barracks, and things beqan to get organized. At the start ot the second semester, under the capable leader- ship of Cary Page and Ted Dent, and the backing of Maior Whitey Urban, the weight lifting bug bit. Enthusiastic be- ginners and veteran lifters alike engaged in the newly formed sport with great zeal and sincereness of purpose. So far the weight lifting plan has been a body building one instead of competitive lifting. Cary Page and his assistant Ted Dent have been using the nationally known Weider system as the course for body building. This employs a series of exer- cises based on a count of ten repetitions, three series each. -The maior part having been upper-body exercises.
