The 12th century started the Spanish monarchy in Sevilla, with its characteristic churches and bell towers, of which the great and magnificent cathedral is one, with its huge bell tower called the Giralda. The cathedral, built by the city of Sevilla is the third largest in the world smaller on- Sevilla as seen through a Moorish Arch Bell Tower on a Spanish Roman Cath- olic Church

outlying towns were being established. Such a town was Italica, at first built for the tired and wounded Roman sol- diers back from the Carthaginian Wars. There was also Carmona, which mainly served as a graveyard because it was high and out of reach of the raging Gudalquivir, which has formed the back- bone of Sevilla's existence from the Phoenician's time to modern day. The Roman Empire was almost completely shattered by the Visigoths, who stayed in pain for some time until the Moors, during one of their religious wars in 712, drove them out. The Moors, of all the conquerors, left behind the most of any of them which can be seen today, since the people after them used their great works of art instead of destroying them. Some of the more predominant are the Alcazar, the Sultan's palace, the Giralcla, first constructed by the Moors as a minaret for their mosque and later changed by the Christians into a bell tower for their great cathedralg and the characteristic small street, which every one considers a symbol of Spain but cont. Spain, developed during the era of monarchs and produced many great men in var- ious fields. One of the greatest was Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote many things, among which his most famous and best piece is Don Quixote de la Mancha. Cervantes was imprisoned -in a jail in Sevilla and While imprisoned here he conceived the idea for that great masterpiece. Sevilla has been an inspiration for young and old, emperors and paupers, Romans, Arabs and Spaniards through- out the ages.
