Orolin Sevilla Sevilla in its grandeur, its Roman, Moor- ish, and Spanish architecture which all add up to give it, alone above all cities, a taint of delight. Sevilla amidst the rolling hills and wheat fields of the region which bears its name, Sevilla! The center of the joy and happiness that many the World over think is so characteristic of this one province of Spain called Andalucia. Sevilla has existed for many centuries and through many empires. It was first used by the Phoenicians and once their great em- pire began to crumble, it was inhabited by the great Roman Empire. The Romans did much for the architecture of Sevilla, as can be seen in the Pillars of Hercules, al- ledged place of an ancient Roman church, and the Wall, built in 250 B.C. when Plaza de Alameda fPillars of Herculesj outlying towns were being established. Such a town was Italica, at first built for the tired and wounded Roman sol- diers back from the Carthaginian Wars. There was also Carmona, which mainly served as a graveyard because it was high and out of reach of the raging Gudalquivir, which has formed the back- bone of Sevilla's existence from the Phoenician's time to modern day. The Roman Empire was almost completely shattered by the Visigoths, who stayed in pain for some time until the Moors, during one of their religious wars in 712, drove them out. The Moors, of all the conquerors, left behind the most of any of them which can be seen today, since the people after them used their great works of art instead of destroying them. Some of the more predominant are the Alcazar, the Sultan's palace, the Giralcla, first constructed by the Moors as a minaret for their mosque and later changed by the Christians into a bell tower for their great cathedralg and the characteristic small street, which every one considers a symbol of Spain but cont. The wall, which at one time surrounded Sevilla, was built in 250 B.C. The Giralda One time minaret for the mosque which was located on the site of the present cathedral which were actually built by the Moors for door to door fighting. The 12th century started the Spanish monarchy in Sevilla, with its characteristic churches and bell towers, of which the great and magnificent cathedral is one, with its huge bell tower called the Giralda. The cathedral, built by the city of Sevilla is the third largest in the world smaller on- Sevilla as seen through a Moorish Arch Bell Tower on a Spanish Roman Cath- olic Church ly than St. Peteris in Rome and St. Paul's in London, both of which were built after the Cathedral of Sevilla. Spain, developed during the era of monarchs and produced many great men in var- ious fields. One of the greatest was Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote many things, among which his most famous and best piece is Don Quixote de la Mancha. Cervantes was imprisoned -in a jail in Sevilla and While imprisoned here he conceived the idea for that great masterpiece. Sevilla has been an inspiration for young and old, emperors and paupers, Romans, Arabs and Spaniards through- out the ages. COACH VINCE COPELLO Though the season's record was not too impressive, the Sevilla Toros were certainly not any push-overs. The first game was played here on Oct. 1 and saw the Toros go down to a 22-14 hard fought loss against Rota. Two weeks later the team traveled to Rota and came back with a 23-14 loss. The Toros displayed a great show Oct. 23, our homecom- ing game, only to see them go down in a defeat of 20-6 against Madrid. The season ended with the team going to Madrid on Nov. 5, re- turning with a 27-8 loss. The football team showed great courage considering the many uyoung players. They will return next year to make the Sevilla Toros 1967-1968 team the best on record. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE TEAM! Many old numerical rec- ords were defeated as the record was set by this year's team. Although we were weak in field events and sprints, four of our boys made up for this weakness in the distance running. Of these, two of our Toros went to Germany for the USDEA finals. FWYE asketball The Sevilla Toros had a very successful varsity basketball season, in view of effort and teamwork. However, they worked hard but couldn't manage to gain those extra two victory points. The Toros had a 1-7 win-loss record in season play with Madrid and Rota and came in third with a 1-2 record in the four team tournament. Despite this, this record does not indicate the lack of ability of the team, for many of the games were very close matches within 2 or 3 points dif- ference on the final scores. Our team was very successful in the San Pablo Intramural League and others, compiling a great string of victories. Pete Hampton, Jimmie Dean, and Tim Buford were the All-Conference selections for the ten-man All-Spain team. Brad Hazzard gets a rebound! On the evening of May 15, 1966, the Senior class was given the most beautiful Prom ever in the history of Sevilla High. Festivities took place in the glamorous Hotel Luz in Sevilla. The Highlight of the evening was the crowning of Queen Laurie Clark and King jim Moretz. The entire junior class, who had Worked hard throughout the year, were proud to be sponsors of the gala affair. Laurie Clark is crowned Queen by junior class president Danny Mongeon. Powder Puff Hop In an effort to raise money for end- of-the-year activities, the Seniors decided to sponsor a Powder Puff Hop the night of the annual Powder Puff Game to accompany their bake sale income. The very successful dance was held in a pink and blue feminine atmosphere and was a big money maker for the Sen- iors. Mike Newhouse and Ken Sim- mons, disc-jockeys from AFRTS, gave their time to host the senior sponsored affair. Everyone joined in dancing and a good time was had by all attending. Good defense action is shown by Shirley Wilkins of the Nicholas as she blocks Joanne Rapacik of Los Mejores and enables a team member to grab the flag. Last fall they planned and executed one such trip which took them to Madrid and its surrounding area. They visited the Prado Museum, one of the more complete museums of art in Europe, the Royal Palace with over 5,000 rooms and outside Madrid they toured El Vaye de los Caidos and El Escorial.
