FRONT ROW: Charlie Hagelgans, Richard Robinson, Jim Gugliotti, Carl Rasmussen, Eugene Korzeniewski, Brad Hopper, MIDDLIC ROW: Richard Sun, Jeff Dove, Gerald Maxson, Lee Cadorette, John Ranes, Jack Swartz. REAR ROW: Coach Preston, Bob Baugh, Gene Munger, Bill McKay, Jim Slack. The Cross Country team had the most successful season of its short career as the Road Runners compiled a record of 7 wins and 2 losses. The Falcons opened their season with an easy victory over Catonsville on the losers, hilly, 2.5 mile course. On the same day the Varsity B team defeated Sparrows Point's Varsity A. The following week the team traveled to Annapolis to meet the Naval Academy Plebes on the Academy Golf course. The Road Runners were handed the first loss of the season despite the fine showing of Richard Sun who broke the Plebe course record by 25 seconds. Dulaney High School, a perennial power in the state, proved un- gracious hosts as they defeated the Falcons 27-29 despite another win- ning effort by Richard Sun and a devastating final sprint by Jim Gugliotti. During the final week of preparation for the Spiked Shoe Invitational Meet, the Road Runners defeated both Annapolis and Brooklyn Park as six Falcons tied for first place over the Brooklyn Park course. The Road Runners missed winning the Spiked Shoe Meet at Johns Hopkins University by just one point, finishing second behind Kenwood, the state champions. The meet saw the best team effort of the year as Richard Sun, undefeated in his Senior year, won setting a new course record. Jim Gugliotti and Gene Munger both finished in the top fifteen, and Bill McKay and John Ranes ran their best races of the season. The team finished the season without Sun, but the Falcons swept to another set of victories over Brooklyn Park and Annapolis, again by per- fect scores. Hopes had been high for the state meet, but with the loss of Sun and an ill Lee Cadorett, the team struggled to a dismal 13th place. Much of the credit for the team's great performance should go to Coach Bill Preston who worked with the boys for three years, building the Falcons into one of the two best cross country teams in the state.
