But even in defeat there were many bright moments and a promise of better years to come. The Falcons won the opening game against Brooklyn Park, won the Homecoming game with St. Maryls, and lost a close, hard-fought Turkey Day match to Annapolis. Through- out the season, the team brought the crowds to their feet with sterling examples of gridiron skill. In addition, the Junior and Sophomores on the Varsity and Junior Varsity proved themselves capable of making a great team next year. Seniors Jay Glatzel, Kirk Young, Joe Welch, Steve Young, and Junior Tom Burnette were the offensive stars for the team. Jay Glatzel played at quarterback, and gave our opponents a triple threat, he could pass, and run, and kick, all with devastating skill. Kirk Young gained 505 yards and scored 54 points from the halfback position. End Joe Welch was the player usually on the receiving end of Glatzel's passes. Steve Young, nm- ning from the other halfback slot, thrilled the spectators with several exciting runs. Junior Tom Burnette drove for 337 yards as fullback. As usual Coach George Roberts fielded an outstanding defensive unit that held even the normally high-scoring offenses of our opponents to relatively low point totals. The Falcons shutout two teams CBrooklyn Park and St. Mary'sJ and held four others to one or two touchdowns CSouthern, Glen Burnie, Atholton, and Annapolisl. The co-captains this year were Jay Glatzel and Steve Young. Assisting Coach Roberts were Robert Leake, Andy Borland, Lowell Moore, and Bill Coyne. The Falcons lost the annual Thanksgiving Day clash with Annapolis, l4f7, but even in defeat the team played a fine game. The players hit hard and forced the Panthers to play to the limit of their potential to come out with a narrow win.
