A little group of Severn students, leaders in school spirit and school activities, inspired by the desire for more intimate comradeship and higher school ideals, pioneered this undertaking, which was in the nature of a real innovation at Severn. Inaugurating the fraternity was not without its difficulties. Certain misgivings on the part of the school authorities as to the desirability of preparatory school fraternities in general had to be over- come, and suitable quarters secured in which to hold meetings. Like all new ventures, Sigma Phi Sigma had to prove itself during the first year or two of its existence. With the building of the new Mess Hall, a room adjoining the Commons Room was made available for the fraternity and the organiza- tion forged ahead. A very definite addition to the social activities of the school was found in a number of dances sponsored by and very ably conducted by the fraternity. The officers of Sigma Phi Sigma for the school year 1950-31 were Robert S, Sloan, president, john XV. Struven, jr., vice-president, and W. T. Rossell, secretary and treasurer. One of the many successful enterprises was the musical organization. Due largely to the efforts of Mr. Robert Pippin an orchestra find a quartet were formed. At first the orchestra was composed of Riddlesberger Baxter Bauer and Potter. just before the Christmas leave Riddlesberger left but two new members were added to the listg these being Doe and Yates. Although the orchestra did not play for any special events, a great deal of enjoyment was derived by the members and by the students from the frequent get-togethers' '. The quartet, conducted by Mr. Pippin, was the greatest success of all. The members of the quartet were Walmsley, Struven, Yates and Stevens. The quartet proved its sterling at a recital given in the latter part of March.
